Great Barrier Reef WARNING LOTS OF PHOTOS!

You know we're jealous right?? what a life, I think I want to move to Australia now, looks like Southern California only way nicer and I bet the crime rates aren't as bad..in all seriousness awesome thread, I am sitting in chilly NYC enjoying it very much!!

The tunnel/arched glass through the exhibit looks very similar to Underwater Adventures at the Mall of America. You pretty much have every member of this sites' dream job.

Melev, yes! i just checked my pms, id be happy to knock something up, as im one of the aquarists there, but it could take a little bit of time, as im flat out at the moment.
Will keep you updated,

Bumping this thought because I want to pursue it when you have the time in your schedule. :p

I just booked our flights to go Port Douglas Australia for vacation in June. Do you happen to know that area and if so do you have any recommendations on what to do there?
Any help would be appreciated.

To the OP:

Wow... thank you SO MUCH for all of the amazing photos. After viewing this thread (and several other ones like it), I'm pretty confident that by the end of the year I'll have purchased a plane ticket to go.

Question is... you gonna give me the ropes on snorkeling/diving, and introduce me to Big Blue? :D

You'll have a PM coming your way soon my friend. This is something I NEED to do before college is over!

Alright, time for an update methinks.
Been rather busy lately, having snared myself a full time job looking after the worlds largest living coral reef tank at ReefHQ in Townsville, which im pretty happy with. =)
Lots of diving, lots of playing around with tanks, and now i get paid to do both!
New camera should be coming soon, a nikon D300, probably in an Ikelite set up, and there are many many new photos for me to sort through and share!
Thanks to everyone for you kinds remarks, and im glad to see the number of people who have decided to come visit and see the GBR for themselves after seeing this thread.

Coral Cs - I havent had much experience in Port Douglas, but it has some very reputable operators, and is in a good spot, so i think your in for a good time. I have heard good things about a boat called Haba (i think) that runs out from there.

CaliDreaminjC - No worries, and when you do make it over here, makes sure you let me know and id be happy to introduce you to the wonderful world of scuba. And of course introduce you to the critters that lie below (including bluey, VW, and all the others)

Melev, when i get some spare time ill start working on that piece you were after, but it could take a little while. Let me know if you have a deadline or a specific time frame. Settled in with the job now, so it should be much easier!

More photos to come soon...

Looks like I'll be heading over in a month! I got lucky and a business trip came up to do a few days in Adelaide, and I was able to extend the trip and fly up to Cains for an extra 6 days on my way home at no extra cost for the airfare.

I'm shopping for live aboard trips out of Cairns. I'm also finishing my Advanced Open Water certification this weekend (so I can do some night diving). And then Peak Performance Bouyancy specialty next weekend.

Any tips for diving in early July? I've heard the winds can be pretty strong, and water a bit on the cooler side. I'm planning on bringing my 3mm full wetsuit. Anything else I should consider packing, other than a hand full of 16GB memory cards for my camera?

There is no deadline. Just whenever you feel you can take the time to do so. When you do, I'll forward it to Team RC so it can be considered. I think it would be a very good feature.

where is this aquarium at? We are going to be in Cairns June 14th to June 26 and are looking for things to do. Of course swimming the reef is one of them :)
