griss’ Battle with Cyano - all the Things I’ve Tried

Well, the deciding factor was it is on sale at Petco for $15, normally $25.

Got an email from PA that my order shipped. I’m close enough I usually get packages the next day from them.

Going to scrub and remove as much Cyano as I can, then 5 gallon WC and hit it with the chemiclean. Here’s some before pics.

Scrubbed the rock, removed as much Cyano as I could and did the water change.

Skimmer is going nuts.

After a bit more research, going to remove the skimmer cup, but let it run for aeration. I also put an air stone in the sump.

Not related to the chemiclean, but haven’t seen my Hawkfish in several days. Not sure what May have happened, but he’s is/was pretty old.

Actually, I think it’s thinning out a bit. If I can get it cut back and maintain a small amount, I’ll be happy.

After hearing Mark Levinson say, when you get Cyano don't fight it, just dose Chemiclean I just follow his advise.
KOW I have not had a problem. I also just left the skimmer cup off. After a week it went back on & I ran slower gradually coming back to where it was.

Okay, weird readings. Granted, my Red Sea kit is about 2 years expired, so Ca, kH and Mg may be off. Nitrate and PO4 are new kits..Salifert and Hanna meter respectively.

Ca 650 ppm
kH 5.3 dKH
Mg 1,100 ppm
Nitrate TOTAL ZERO
PO4 0.08

Ya, you can't trust those numbers unfortunately. When you get new kits, I highly recommend Hanna for the Alk, Salifert for calcium, magnesium.

I forgot the salifert ALK is titration so it's ok. I thought from memory it's was a colour match. The hanna alk tester is just super easy and what I prefer.
