griss' Tank Upgrade Thread

Left a message for my HVAC guy but after looking at this more, I don’t think he’s going to be able to do anything.

It goes up to the second story of the house directly above the support beam. On the other side of the beam is pipe going to the outside hose bib.

Might have to just do the best framing we can and partially cover the window with 2x4’s and drywall.
How about your guy moves the round duct to the end of the main duct and goes straight up into the joist cavity over the window.

Brilliant, that might work. Still gonna look funny but, might make framing around the window easier.

I think I’m over thinking this. Since we need to bulkhead/frame around the duct and beam anyway, the framing/drywall is going to be lower than the top of the window no matter what we do.

that ducting challenge you have is an interesting one, I'm surprised that it would be allowed from a code standpoint since it blocks your window....

There are 4 windows in the basement all in a row on the same wall. So, I guess one being unable to be fully opened isn’t an issue????🤷🏻‍♂️

Not a lot accomplished. Left my HVAC guy a VM before Christmas, his message said he’d be out until after Christmas.

We didn’t accomplish as much as we hoped because we kept going back to looking at the window/duct situation.

HVAC guy called yesterday, he remembered the exact layout of the basement and said he likely wouldn’t be able to do much to remedy the situation for less than a lot of labor intense/expensive work. Said he could come look Monday.

Today, Mrs griss and I decided we’ll just bite the bullet and partially block the window. We did a little wall framing today but, I put the homemade cat tree back in front of it so no pics. I’ll post some pics of the bulkheads we got started around the duct work and support beam at another time.

Yesterday, I reconnected with a friend who used to own one of my favorite LFS around here. Met him to trade some frags and BS about reefs a bit. I mentioned to him about the scratched tank and thinking about buffing it out. He said, even if I was successful, the glass would look wavy once I filled the tank🤬

So, I’m 99.9% sure I’m going to sell this tank for next to nothing and just buy new once the basement is done. Now, the question is, what’s an old Oceanic 120 reef ready, scratched glass, not water tested, without the overflow and return components and a stand that needs cosmetic repairs worth? Would appreciate any thoughts.

Out here I just finally unloaded that 40g tank I had for $75. For all I know, the tank itself was 40 years old (LOL). I threw in a couple small items for the kid like a heater, two old filters, half bag of salt etc....

Made a little progress today. The wall with the windows continues to prove very challenging as the following are all in, on or near the foundation wall with the windows:
- windows
- support beam
- pipe to hose bib
- internet cable
- satellite coaxial
- AC support bracket
- circuit panel

Additionally, there’s a 6” gap between the last open joist and the foundation so, we’re having to crib that up before putting a header in place.

All that to say, the going is slow. Once we get done with this wall, the next wall is straight, all open and the only obstruction is the water main. So, that should go fast.

Your project capacity is much greater than mine. We are having a new deck built next month, which I'm very excited about because I know the contractor and he's great with finishing work, so I know it will be beautiful. But it's going to cost the price of a small car, so I'm not excited about that at all. all that said, a bit of the demo work/prep work is landing on my shoulders and I'm counting how many days of daylight I have left to get it all done. we still have these very short days here in the puget sound area, doesn't leave a lot of motivation for additional projects when the 6hrs of daylight I see are all on Saturday, and typically in the rain :ROFLMAO:

I don't know that I'll get anything done during the week this week. Shoveled the drive yesterday, top couple inches were snow, then a 1 inch layer of frozen sleet, then another couple inches of snow and on the bottom a layer of ice. I'm sore as hell.

Honestly I envy your snow. I don't mind driving in it as both our cars are AWD. We are in that stage of Western WA where it is 39F and rainy from about Oct till May-ish. every couple years we do get a couple days of snow. some years a light dusting. Once or twice a decade we get a big snow fall of 6-12" which lasts maybe 1-3 days before the rain washes it away, but I swear the snow is warmer, and it's also so much brighter than our normal grey dark / short days. we are very serious about working towards snowbird status some day, that's the dream.... although it might make reefing difficult, lol.

We don't get snow here is St. Louis (I'm about 30 miles west of downtown STL) all that often. When I was younger, it seemed like we got snow a lot more often. The last 10-20 years it seems like we get more sleet and freezing rain.

Saturday and Sunday we got alternating bands of sleet and snow. Total accumulation at my house was about 8". But, some areas north of us got 12+". The temperature this morning was 9, right now (10:45 AM) it's 20 with a high of 25. Tomorrow starts off with a low of 8 and a high of 35. Friday, low of 25, high of 34 with an 80% chance for a dusting to an inch more of snow.

that actually sounds pretty great! I mean, I don't want it to last 6 months or anything, but a couple days being snowed in with the fireplace running doesn't sound so horrible. hopefully you guys have the infrastructure to support it. we actually really don't. I have had folks from upstate NY visit and throw a tantrum when the plows weren't out the same day as the snow. I had to tell them most of our towns don't even have plows cause we're lucky to get one snow day a year so best you can hope for is either a little deicer or we just wait it out for 24hrs lol

They upgraded the forecast to 2-4" last I heard. Took me twice as long to get into the office today (1 hour vs 25-30 minutes). I saw ONE snow plow on the drive in and it wasn't spreading salt at all. All secondary roads were snow covered/packed and very slick. The highway was just as bad and only 1 or 2 lanes were (barely) driveable where there are usually 4 lanes.
