history of lunar's reef

Hey Krzystof,

Absolutely love everything you do. Tank looks stunning. Wondering if you could explain the process of how you use PO4x4. Can you provide details on quantity you use for your size tank, how often you change it, do you run it continuously or only when you see a rise, whether or not you regenerate it and how often, any issues you may have found with using the product and any tips you could pass on to us that might be helpful? I use BRS regular GFO and I'm finding it more and more difficult to maintain sub-.03 numbers with my growing tank using their product without starving my fish and coral and I don't like that at all.

Thanks
John.

did you try rowaphos John? Krzystof regarding po4x do you think it is better than rowa?

Never tried Rowa. Like I said I've been using BRS GFO for many years and it's been great but I'm finding that these days I'm needing to reduce my feedings to keep my Po4 under .1. Either that or replace the product more often which is not cost effective.

I have been doing some investigation into the SeaKlear PHos Remover method but I'd rather not go there if PO4x4 works for me. I ordered 1000ml and the regenerator last week to see if this stuff does a better job than BRS. Since Kryz has been using it for a while with great results, I just needed some pointers on how he's been using it. I've actually heard that if too much is used initially it can have negative effects on your corals and I in no way want that to happen.

Kryz, if you're out there, please help.

Hi Krzysztof,
you said ATI powermodule works full lighting for 8 hours, blue lighting in the morning for two hours and in the evening two hours.
How many t5 works during morning and evening? what is their position in the lamp?

thanks

A second question: what's the difference, in your opinion, between 10 hours full lighting and to alternate blu ligth (12 h) + full light reduced (8 h)?

Hi Krzysztof, beautiful tank... I'm big fan of reef tanks from Poland. Is there big difference when you compare the light from FM Ultra Royal blue and Aquasciense Blue (ATI blue)?

Thanks, John.
Now I'm using about 1L PO4x4 phosphate remover continously to maintain PO4 about 0,03. How often I change it? It depends on PO4 readings, usually every two months. I don't regenerate it although others do it with success.
A pump Aquabee 1000 is connected to the filter and the flow rate is about 400L/h. This adsorber is a type of tiny, light resin so it tends to flow out of the filter that's why there is a nylon filtersock under the outlet of the filter in my tank. You should also use PO4x4 in a tall filter with two sponges, one on the bottom and the other on the top of filter.

I used to use Rowaphos. In my opinion this adsorber is less effective than PO4x4 and it's depleted faster.

Every phosphate remover may have negative effects on your corals if you decrease PO4 level too fast. You can use 500ml initially and after several days add more or not.

I'd like to know if you like PO4x4. Let me know after some time.

Sounds great. I really appreciate the help. I will absolutely let you know how it goes. I just received 1000ml of PO4x4 today. I'm going to give it a shot. I use the MR1 from NextReef which is about 14" tall. It uses an adjustable pump that does around 500l/h max so I can back it off a bit to match your flow. The unit uses 2 pads as you describe so we should be good there. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

John

fantastic progression over the years..
i loved reading the whole thread.. i don't know how i missed it all this time..
beautiful!!

Just added 750ml of PO4x4 to my NextReef MR-1. Took a reading with my Hanna Checker today before starting the pump. PO4 is at .05. Let's see how she does.

Outstanding, truly a masterpiece!
I would really like to see the whole sump and equipment you are using.
Do you monitor ORP?
thanks

Hi Krzysztof,

The third tube from the begining and the third one from the back, both T5 work in the morning and in the evening and of course during full light together with the rest T5. The powermodule consists of 10 tubes.

A second question: what's the difference, in your opinion, between 10 hours full lighting and to alternate blu ligth (12 h) + full light reduced (8 h)?

I use activated carbon, bacteria and do regular water changes so the water is crystal clear. The full light for 10 hours would be too much, some corals become too light.

Hi Krzysztof, beautiful tank... I'm big fan of reef tanks from Poland. Is there big difference when you compare the light from FM Ultra Royal blue and Aquasciense Blue (ATI blue)?

Thank you.
Ultra Royal blue is a mix of slightly actinic and blue light, AS or ATI are only blue. Ultra Royal blue seems to give warmer light than ATI or AS.

I'm happy that you love reading the thread despite my poor English. Thank you.

Thank you.
Photos of my sump you can find in this thread.
No, I don't monitor ORP.

So you realize there is no way you can go on without a skimmer? Better to have a skimmer then not have have one?

How did your corals respond over time without a skimmer?

Hi Lunar.
First congratulate by the wonderful aquarium.

I would like to ask you a few questions about your aquarium, if you want.
I have an aquarium 500l +100 l sump and use biopellets XL but do not go well.
Now I use biopllets xl in a reactor with a pump 1000l .
Could you tell me if 1000l/h is much? what flow would you put?. my no3 is 0.2 and my po4 0.1 and I am not able to download it. I should add more biopellets? or should I add po4x4?
thank you very much for helping me.

Best regards

Krzysztof
Congratulations again, I'm a fan of your reef

I have some questions, if you permit.

What amino-acid do you use, if any ?

I know you put the return of your BP reactor next to the skimmer feed pump.
I would like to know you opinion about using all the BP reactor flow to feed the skimmer, and just save one pump or do you prefer leave some bacteria to feed the corals ?

Do you quarentine your new corals and fish ?

Lastly, have you consider using siporax to improve your biological filtration ?

Thanks

Check this youdontknowme..

Krzysztof, I'd LOVE to see an update..
Your tank is simply stunning..

I just came across this thread - love your tank Lunar! Hope all is going well and the acros are growing back in nicely. Would love to see an update.

Simply beautiful!!! Its biopellet tanks like this that almost make me start using them. A pleasure to see the video and it looks even better in the update pic!!! Amazing job.

Going through the history of this tank makes me think it's more than biopellets at play - it looked amazing at all stages no matter his export method!
