How much should I pay

I have a friend who is selling his 90gal tank. Its 5ft long, has stand and canopy. Has DIY 2 175W MH and 2 T5 actinics. 50 gal sump/fuge. skimmer rate for 175gal. 1 K4, 2 K3's, 1 K2. External overflow, so its not reef ready. about 100lbs of LR and 100lbs of sand. coral and fish. Its a complete tank that he no longer needs. What would be a fair price for me to offer him?

he has blue tang, true perc, coral beauty, blenny

Sadly for your friend, he won't get near what he has in it which is probably between $3000 and $4000. I think $1000 would be a generous offer, he'd just have a hard time selling it all for much more than that and may not even get that much. You don't see a lot of systems for sale that are running on craig's list. I'd ballpark some prices there. 100 pounds of rock is over $500 alone. Even at $1000 you'd be getting a good deal if this is exactly what you are looking for. If you really like this set up and the fish and have a great spot in mind you could go higher but more than $1500 would seem like you aren't getting as good a deal as you could buying used elsewhere. If you really trust your friend and he can help you get set up, that's worth something too.

I'm curious to see what others think.

i would say about $500 to $600 is what it would go for on craigslist in my area it would go for more if the rock was nicer

but probably is 2k worth of stuff... i just bought a 75 gal with a 30 gal sump asm g3 skimmer 4 t5 lights custom glo set up some diy metal halide kits a mag 9 pump pvc piping 100 lbs of live rock some aiptasia problems with a couple starfish and the stand and canopy for 300

yeah craigs list is a nice gauge on prices. my guess is 600-to 750 max if he gives you everything including his ro/di if he has one:)

It's kind of sad how little our investment in all this stuff is worth. Buying used is the way to go. He's got some nice fish and like I said, if he'll help set it up there's more value there than buying off a stranger on craig's list.

$1000 is a good deal, especially if it's running and full of livestock. That is a really nice looking setup, and the extra 1' over a 75 Gallon is really nice, especially for the tangs. The tank looks like it has an internal overflow, is the back wall drilled?

it has a rodi and return pump. Its not drilled 4 sure, but Im not gonna go threw all that trouble to drill it.

If it was too much trouble to have it drilled, then that would be the deal breaker for me, I'd find another tank. Maybe this tank will work for you, but dealing with a hang on the back overflow is not something I would ever do again.

If that's a pic of the actual tank you're getting, then it's drilled. It has an internal overflow box...it wouldn't have an overflow if it wasn't drilled.
