I purchased a Hoddoni, I think I got Gigantea??

That is a beautiful anemone! Just looked at the project slides on your site, man you have a lot of talent! Showed the outdoor barbeque to my husband hoping to give him some ideas for next project!:D

Thanks, I just finished that BBQ, seems like it took me forever.

...on a sadder note: The gigantea seems very healthy, tenticle are moving, sticky, and when and is eating silverside. IT is very sensative to the touch, when I drop a silverside into it, all the tenticles seems to react, almost like a fast wave.

I have notice that when the surge hits (indirectly) it is loosing grip with its foot, so much that I was able to get a picture of it. It appears to have a liitle something right in the center of the foot. I presume that is the little area of spagetti like stuff that I have read about, which spells disater for giganteas. What a bummer, it is such a beautaful specimen, and am sadden that it will most likely die of this infection.

It is getting pleanty of light, lots of surge flow, and I will continue to try to feed it daily, it the rare hope that it might pull through, but from everthing I have read, I would be suprised.

Here are some pics

Several days now and it have not deflated at all. I would not worry about it. Keep us post.
You sure got some aptasia. You need to put a CBB in your tank ASAP:)

ha ha ...Yes. I do, appearantly Im breeding them, if you would like any, I will ship them to ya, free of charge ;)..... that was why I went to the fish store, for CBB, but ended up with gigantea. I tried a raccon, but he really took a liking to my clams, so I had to remove him. CBB is coming soon.

Best of luck. I agree with Minh, no reason to give up hope yet. Maybe it's just sort of settling in, maybe shifting around a bit getting used to the new currents and eddies. Mine did do that at first, they never really deflated, so if yours hasn't either maybe that's a cause for some hope.

I'm not 100% sure I would be feeding everyday. I only feed mine weekly, .. maybe ultimately they get a little more than that because they catch some of the food for the fish, but that's their perogative :) As far as direct feeding I only feed 'em about once a week.

And I should mention they eat just about anything.. flake. cyclops-eeze, spirulina (of all things), but the main staple I feed them are mysis.

Anyhow keep us posted. We're rooting for you!

Thanks - I not giving up on it by no means. it just seems very healthy. he spit out tonights silverside after about an hour. So im backing of the daily offerings, but every night I feed mysis, so it can san some of that if it wants.

Ill keep posting status as the days go by.

good luck. Did you inspect the foot before he went in or is it possible that the mesenterial strands were already hanging out the foot?

I didnt inspect the center, just outside edges( I was focused on getting in to the tank with minimal stress and didnt want to man handle it too much). When I got him from the LFS, he had just come in and was still in the shipping bag from the wholesaler, so it didnt happen at the LFS.

thanks

While that is a concern, behavior is your biggest indicator in the health of the anemone.

If its still eating with gusto and not deflated, and still reacts to food, I would think your doing fine overall.
Wait and see.

Nick

Great looking anemone. Looks healthy and might even purple up some more in time. Great find and cool movie!

must be gigantea season. I was just at the LFS and they had 3 purples in. one with a gaping mouth and 2 with just a little puffyness to the mouth. All had good looking feet and decent tentacles.

Definitely gigantea season. My LFS got 4 in. . . all look to be in fantastic condition as his importer ships "dry" and the LFS medicates with antibiotics as soon as they arrive. They're all a sort of brownish-blue color.

:D

nice, but gigantea are easy to keep
Is this a joke, not to be rude but i cant tell whether it is or not, sorry.

UPDATE; This morning (6am) gigantea was pretty much deflated and its foot was hanging on by about 20%. It looked like it was about to blow off the rock when the surge hit. Tonight, it looks better. The foot has completely retached to the rock, it is about 80 % inflated/reflated? ...and holding its own against the surge, much better then when I first got it. It took some pics. Picture #5 is during the surge.

This was about 10am, still deflated, but making a small recovery

PS. As you can see, I have an aiptasia problem (working on it ;)) Any aiptaia that come into contact with the gigantea, are getting the tenticles burned to a stump. :D
