Heyo. I'm interested in starting a 55gal reef tank. Ive never done this before so it should be interesting! I'm excited to start, but not really sure what I'm getting myself into. I haven't bought anything yet so I thought I'd look for some help here! Anyone have a grocery list of things I should buy to get things started? Besides the tank obviously...

Well, I have been watching and reading...and more reading...for a while now. This site and the numerous questions asked daily have been very educational.

I am in the process of putting together a 58g Oceanic RR...it used to be setup saltwater by a friend, who recently gave it to me, and I have stripped it down and am rebuilding it from the ground up.
Currently I am finishing a new stand for the tank that I built, and setting up the sump with dividers.
I also just picked up a good deal on a used Nova Extreme Pro 6x39w T5.
I have lots of rock that is being stored in sw with a powerhead, and I am hoping to get creative with a hammer-drill, plastic rod and super glue :)

FWIW, I also have a 55g freshwater planted tank with CO2, and a custom hood with 2x54w T5's.
Also a freshwater 10g with a few live plants.

You'd be better off using reef safe epoxy to affix the rocks. Be sure to start a build thread so we can follow along.

Hello, I am jriggs1965 and I'm from Bessemer City NC. I have been in and out of saltwater for about 5 years now. Not a newbie, but a novice. I do know a lot, but no where near everything and can use a lot of help. Right now I just have a 35 hex that is FOWLR setup. 2-True Percs, 2-Azure Damsels, Coral Beauty, Cleaner Shrimp, and couple snails, Fluval submersible filter, 2-Korailas, 4" Live Sandbed, and about 70 lbs LR. The tank was given to me by a friend. It has quite a bit of scratches, so I am planning on getting a new 75 in the next couple months. I will post pics when I do the upgrade.

Well, I'm not totally new, I've been a lurker since 07 but I thought I'd introduce myself anyways.

My name is Jay and I've had freshwater tanks for years. I currently have a 110g aggressive cichlid tank and 55g community tank.

I tried a saltwater tank briefly back in 07 and a sudden move due to work forced me to take it down and I haven't tried it again since.

Well I'm finally going to give it a go again with a 55g cube I picked up from a guy.

All the new information is somewhat overwhelming, lol but I'm taking it all in slowly and just want to make sure I do this right.

I just wanted to say thanks to those that have already answered some questions for me and given me some things to be aware of.

See ya around!

Hi all, Im Will, been looking on here for a long time, finaly decided to join, and im glad i did. The infor, the help, is outstanding. Everyone here is great. There always ready to help in anyway they can.

On that note some stats:

Current tank is a 125g long, with a 30g sump/refugium fed by a cpr over flow, large DYI skimmer, two canister filters, one recently converted to be a calcium reactor. Two 175w MH with 20K bulbs, 4 t8 10K, and 18k actinic, About 250 lbs of live rock, but currently makeing a rock wall, so maybe getting rid of some of it.

Fish: Tang, manderin, scooter blenny, lawnmower blenny, camel fish, pigmy angel, two clowns, and a clean-up crew of hermits, and snails.

Hopefully your second time around you'll be able to stay put long enough to enjoy the hobby.

I would like to follow your progression with that rock wall, that's sounds like a neat project. If you start a new thread be sure to send me the link so I can follow along.

what's up guys i'm getting a tank in about 2 weeks! Trust me i'm going to need some help. I'm thinking 90g but I really like the 120g. what's shocking is that they range from $300 to $6k. how can that be?? Other than this site, there's zero info on the web.

There are so many different options when it comes to tanks, they can come with built in overflows (reef ready), acrylic or glass, they come with differing levels of transparencies like starphire glass (which has very little green tint), rimless, rounded or seamed corners, the list goes on....and of course all that comes with a higher price tag.

To help answer some questions I would recommend reading through this thread

good luck, and if it helps I would opt for the 120 over the 90.

Not exactly new but it has been 5+ years since I had a tank. I used to have a 55g tank but when my ex and I moved into our house I broke the tank down and disposed of it. Now that I am single again I am starting out with a 36g bow front with about 45lb of LR. Trying to do this one slowly and correctly. The plan is to upgrade to a 75g (or other 4' tank with sump as soon as I can find one for cheap).
