If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Having a diatom bloom, dont know how to get rid of it... Parameters are good, corals and fish are thriving, but tank sand and live rock look ugly... Tank up and running about 3 months I know it's still cycling but was hoping that its not gonna crash....

If it is in fact diatoms then it's all part of the tanks "maturing" process. I would advise you start a new thread and post some pictures, along with actual parameters (saying, "Parameters are good" doesn't help). it wouldn't hurt if you listed your livestock and corals either.

Hello, I've been keeping fresh water aquariums off and on for over 30 years. Just took my first leap into salt.

I have set up a 60 gallon tank. I have a Whisper 60 (I know, why?), a Fluval 305, Ehiem 2227 Wet/Dry, 2 small 750 gph hydor koralia pumps, T5 HO lighting (4 bulbs), 50 pounds of live sand, 45 pounds of live rock.

It's populated with two damsels and two clowns and a banded coral shrimp. I am fighting a nitrate issue now, expected because the tank is so new, about 6 weeks old.

I know I need to get a protein skimmer soon. Trying not to break the bank right away. Lighting was bad enough.

Water changes are done (2 6 gallon changes so far) with RO/DI water and Instant Ocean salt. Top offs with RO/DI.

Looking forward to learning! I eventually want corals but right now its FOWLR.

Be sure to read through this thread it has lots of great information.

I'm new to Reef Central, not to reef tank or web forums. I'm from Windsor, ON, Canada and have been suggested by a few locals to join up.

I have a 24G AquaPod and I'm working on setting up a 90G Display.

I see there isn't a Windsor or even an Ontario forum.... or is there?

Ideas and advice sought for a new indoor/outdoor 170 + gal tank

Ideas and advice sought for a new indoor/outdoor 170 + gal tank

I am brand new to this hobby. We had a 45 gal FW tank in our other house that was installed in a window over the kitchen sink. The window looked into an air-conditioned Florida room.

We are in a different house now and want to do the same configuration but with a larger tank. This time the window over the sink looks out onto a 13' deep covered back porch, which is by the pool. There is a 5" thick poured & reinforced concrete slab overhanging the Concrete block wall by 15". I intend set the tank on this & build a cabinet underneath to house the mechanics. This slab will easily support probably as much as 3,000 lbs.

The tank will be approx 53.75" wide X 44" high X 18" deep. This will encompass the entire view of the window. I have attached a sketch of our basic concept and am open to all suggestions and advice.

I have never built a tank before but I am a master wood-worker, cabinet -maker. With some instruction, I think I could do a fine job. Or... I am open to bids is someone wants to quote me a price I can live with.

I need advice on material type & grade selection & sourcing as well as the mechanics. One of my friends has a complete large pump, chiller and filtration system that was previously used to maintain multiple tanks totaling about 2500 gal. I can probably get all of this equipment for as little as $200.00. Once I find out what it is, may I post that info. here and get advice on whether or not I can incorporate it into my build?

Thanks!

I would check the local craigs list or Reef Central has a section for local clubs, look through here to see if there are any active clubs in your area.

you're right, there's only 4 international clubs here on RC, however you can be the one to start one in your area.

You're definitely going to want to support the entire tank, you don't want anything to hang over, so for that last 5" you'll need to build a stand that is flush with the window seal.

Sounds like it's going to be a fun and unique project. And if you haven't found it already, check out the DIY Forum. You can ask your questions there and you'll get lots of help. Good Luck. and when you do start your build thread, send me the link so I can follow along.

Sounds like you have a good collection of equipment, I would suggest breaking up the heater wattages to 2 heaters (instead of a 300 use two 150), that way if 1 fails (and it usually fails in the ON position) it won’t rapidly over heat you tank and on the flipside if it fails to turn on you’ll have 1 heater trying to maintain temp.

Intro for Newbie

My name is Chris. New to the hobby, new to the forum, pretty much new to everything. Just saying my hellos to a new forum. Thanks.

Hello ALL. Not really new to here or the site. Ive been in the hobby for about 10 years. Started with a 75 gallon. Of course went to a bigger tank, a 225 gallon. Then was setting up for a 135 gallon plumbed into the same system that the 225 was running on. Long story short, divorced and now and with my girlfriend that is into the hobby. YAY!!!! About 6 months after setting up the tank at her house, the center brace cracked. The tank is only 3 years old, and Ocieanic would not cover the 10 year warrenty. Ocieanic did send me a new top to replace the broken one, this took about 7 weeks to get. Went to break the tank down to replace the top, put all fish and corals in a cooler and rocks/water in trash cans. The next morning i checked the fish and corals were all fine. 4 hours latey all are were dead, the heater stuck on!!!!!!!
Ended up some buttons we had was the only thing that survived. So here is some pics of starting completly over. We have the Racoon Butterfly in as a temporary. In 4 hours he had all the rock anemones gone. Our intentions are to just stay with just soft corals. So here we are.
