If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone :)

Hello everyone :)

Hello everyone ... I have just joined Reef Central .. I am from Kuwait .. Has been in this hobby since 2005 .. Right now I'm running two tanks connected to one sump with a total volume of Approx. 1200 liters containing almost exclusively SPS corals and some LPS .. I also have some rare fishes that has been in my tank for sometime .. Looking forward to participate in Reef Central activities .. Thanks everyone ..

I am kinda new, I have been on as a member for only a month or so, but I have been reading these forums for years. The reason I signed up was to document my tank build, and get some feedback on my tank. The build can be found here

RC has been one of the best tools for reefing that I've encountered. The setups and ideas on display threw out this site seam to be endless...and even if read all there is on this site there will be thousands of new post the next day.
I am 8 years addicted to keeping corals and I never intend on stopping. Once you fill an aquarium you should get another one, IMO.

Hi everyone ,
I had a 135 g african cichlid tank in the 90's, loved it, but have been away from the hobby for almost 20 years . I've been a scuba diver for 20 years also and have always wanted a reef tank ; totally hooked now that I've finally taken the plunge. ! Glad to b here and look forward to meeting you all!

Hi Everyone.

I'm a long time lurker and finally decided to register. Apologies for the long intro.

A little bit about me...I'm originally from Scotland but moved to California around 13 years ago. I got into fish keeping more than 30 years ago when I inherited some veil tail goldfish when a neighbor's tank burst. Kept them and some European natives for a few years before moving on to the typical FW tropical fare. Kept them for a few years before starting a SW FO tank - complete with canister filtration and the sterile coral skeletons that were popular at the time. I got discouraged and I gave up the hobby when I went to university as I couldn't devote the time to the care and maintainence.

I got back into the hobby about 6 years ago and started a 30G planted FW for my daughter - still have 3 of my original fish. About 4 years ago I upgraded to a 75G and moved the contents of the 30G. Around October last year my kids begged me to start up the 30G as a SW, which I started to do over Christmas.

So here's my current SW set up - I'm pretty sure I'll be upgrading :) soon.

30G Sump-less FOWLR; 10lbs of base rock; 44lbs of LR; Reef Octopus BH-2000 HOB Skimmer; Coralife 2-tube HO T5; a couple of Hydor Koralia Nano 425s for flow; Neptune Aquatics Aquacontroller Jr + DC8.

Source water is from a BRS 4 state RO/DI.

Tank inhabitants include: 2 common clowns (I have kids - I had to get these), a very active Pygmy Angel, and a half-dozen (or so) mushrooms. CUC consists of a few astreas, a few nassarius, a handful dwarf ceriths, a few dwarf brittle starts that were stowaways, a handful of nerites, and a few red-legged and blue-legged hermits.

The tank has been running just under 4 months. Clowns were added around 6 weeks ago. Cherub was added 2 weeks ago (after spending 2 weeks in QT).

Water parameters (measured before a water change on Sunday) are:
S.G. 1.025
pH: 8.3
dKH: 11
Ca: it was either 460 or 480 ppm
Mg: don't have a kit yet - I presume it's OK.
Ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are all 0 ppm.
Phosphate was 1.0 ppm until I added some GFO into the return chamber of the skimmer and now it's undetectable.

Water change schedule is 20% every other week; the off weeks are when I do the FW water changes. I make sure I do them on different nights.

Anyway I want to thank everyone for their (unconscious) advice. It has been extremely valuable and made this foray in SW much more enjoyable than my last.

HI guys. My name is Tyler, and I just registered today. I was referred here by a friend on another forum. I just bought a 75 gallon saltwater aquarium from a past owner of three years. I have no experience with saltwater tanks or any tanks for that matter and I joined because I quickly learned to gravity of my decision to start this great hobby without any experience or knowledge. Hopefully, you guys will be able to take me under your wing. I am already having problems with my tank. If you can, take a look at the thread I started "nitrate problem." Thank You in advance, and I hope to gain vast amounts of knowledge from you guys.

Hey everyone! I just found your site from a link while searching around. My wife and I just started our saltwater adventure. I'll probably lurk a lot while learning as much as I can. But you can probably expect a bunch of fairly newbie questions from me.

First time on here.

First time on here.

Well hello to everyone on RC. This is my first posting on any of the forums. So I have had fresh water tanks for yr's and now I have decided to try salt water. I have wanted to try for year's but never got around to it. So I bought myself a 29g biocube and have started the process of curing my tank for the first time. I have been reading every day on here for a few hours for the last 2 weeks on how to get started the right way. So I know it will take some time to get my tank where I want. Anyways Love reading your helpful info and have a good day.

Hi RC
I am new to Saltwater and have been learning so much here. thanks for sharing the knowledge.
I have a 150 gal brackish im setting up now with a 40 gal breeder tank below as a filter.
A 215 i will be setting up full saltwater this summer hopefully. :worried:

A 10,000 gal koi pond, 2 300 gal, 1 110 gal QT/winter tanks and a 29 gal with 2 guppies and a snail breeding factory going on that i use to feed my 4 green spotted puffers.
I currently have my puffers in a 55 gal but they will go into the 150 when it's ready. I typically take a rock with algae out of the 55 and set it in the 29 gal for a few hours until snails cover it. then i put it back in the 55 gal and the puffers have a feast.:crazy1:

Hello everyone. Its been 6 years since I had a salt water aquarium and it was a glass tank. It started leaking so I had to give my stuff away, so I going to start another salt water tank. I just purchased a 65 plexi hex aquarium w/ a stand and canopy. Once I get all the equipment to run the tank correctly, and get it stocked with fish Ill post some pics.. Wish me luck!

Howdy,

Mike from Texas...had several freshwater tanks for several years. South American cichlids and African Cichlid tanks as well as raised rams for a couple of years. I was forced to get rid of them all in an unexpected move.

I'm now a little more stable and am itching to get into saltwater...but I'm scared of the tear down possibilities living in an apartment. I'm willing to get into a tank between 100-150 gallons because I know they're more forgiving but there's a lot of competing information out there about what to get and what is hyperbole. Here's a brief list of conflicting information that I've been trying to get to the bottom of:

in tank/outside tank filter
chillers
heaters
bioballs
wooden stands vs metal stands per salt creep and corrosion issues
deep tanks vs shallow long tanks
buying fish I like that get along (supposedly) or buying fish that actually do exist together in the wild. I tried to do this with all my tanks save the cleaner fish.
how much water flow I need to do a fish/live rock/possible invertibrates tank

I don't have a lot of room for storage of maintainence equipment where I'm at right now but I have room for a pretty large tank. Lots of living space, very little storage space:(

I love activity in the tanks but I'm not interested in the aggressive species...I like harmony and peace and interesting activity.

Ok, now that I've shown my OCD, anyone have book suggestions or videos or advice;)

thanks,

mike

Hey guys Ive spent lots of time surfing the forums on here and have gained tons of knowledge from it. I have a 30 gal DT with a 20 gal sump that I hope will hold me over for a while.

Hello fellow reefers my name is Donald from Westchester New York.
I have been in the freshwater ciclid hobby for about 10 years and recently bought a new tank to dive into the saltwater world. Glad I came across this site and hope to learn a lot.

Hello everyone I'm Emil from Seal Beach, CA.
I'm fairly new to the hobby. Have a 20 gallon bubble tank I bought from craigslist. Formerly had a pair of seahorses but they died so now I have a pair of misbars. The site is great and I've learned quite a bit.
