Hi I'm frank I am new to the salt water world I just bought a forty gallon breeder tank and was wondering the best equipment for a good price to set up my tank.

What;s up RC?! I just set up my first saltwater aquarium and need major guidance! I have been doing my research for a few months and finally decided to take the plunge. My tank is 1 week old and is going through its first cycle. I have 40lbs of live Fiji sand and ~35lbs of mixed (haitian & purple) live rock. I have been checking my levels every two days and it looks to be doing OK! Any recommendations on lighting cycles, when to get my first CUC in (and what critters are recommended), when to use my CoraLife protein skimmer and DeepBlue Clarity+ UV Sterilizer???

"Hey decided to start a marine tank." That was the entire thought process! Eight weeks of frustration and a lot of money later I'm finally starting to fall into the learning curve. Unfortunately there have been a few victims and I feel that it is important to recognize them, and observe a moment of silence on their behalf.
Candy Coral
Watchman Goby
Banded Butterfly Fish
My start was accelerated by inheriting the contents of a tank that could be no more and I feel that it placed upon me responsibilities I was not prepared to meet.
I have had some successes as well and have 2 thriving Frogspawn corals, Hoeven's Wrasse, a BTA, 2 BG Chromis, False Percula Clownfish, and numerous snails, shrimp and crabs.
So wish me well and thank you for all the support.

Hows everyone doing I have about a year under my belt with saltwater had a 75g got rid of it now I'm building a 40b setup built the sump out of a 20L and.1/4" glass baffles 36" odyysea t5 light mag 5 return currently looking for a skimmer and waiting on my internal overflow box to be finished any questions or comments let me know :)

Mark here, I had many tanks in High School back in the late 70's. I had my local "pet store" set up one of their first under tank filtration systems in my first and only marine tank. In other words, by today's standards I am a total newb. My 55 gallon marine tank kept aggressive species that were very large and healthy when I left the "sport". I attribute this to my anal attention to water chemistry and frequent use of a diatom filter with carbon. This would never have worked with coral obviously. I am planning to build a reef tank between 75 and 90 gallons over the next few months.

Hello World

Hello World

Lurking for months and getting ready to take the plunge. I am torn between gradually buying parts for the "perfect" setup vs. trying to find a used setup. Looking for a 6'-8' tank.

Hello everyone, new to the forum as well as the hobby. I thought id post as i've been reading for a few weeks now. I'm in a bit of a predicament as i'm trying to find information on how to store my tank and critters for long period of time and the more i read, the more i realize im short on cash and not very prepared.

I recently sold my house and now have no place to go so i need to store my stuff at my parents for awhile. I dont have a 2nd tank to get up an running so i've purchased a large tote to store things. I've put in a heater and power head but i'm not 100% sure what all i can store.

I have a 30 gallon hexagon tank with an aqueon Modular LED light. I just run a straight up carbon filter for now, but once i find a house to buy im going to buy a 60 gal tank and invest in some sort of RO filtering system..maybe install a sump...My friend recently took his saltwater tank down and gave me his live rock so i have about 60lbs of live rock in there as well as the live sand. I have 8 hermit crabs, 4 nasara snails, 1 coral banded shrimp, 2 conch and 1 damsel. Not much live stock but enough id love to not kill anyone!

Im guessing things will sit for a month or 2 so thought this would be a perfect time to see some rock. Initially i was going to put the rock in the tote with the heater and powerhead and let it sit but im unsure what to do with the remainder of my tank! Hopefully i'll find the answers while sorting thru the countless posts!

This hobby is legit! Anyone who says marine tanks are easy is crazy!

Hello all

Hello all

I'm new to the hobby but have yet to buy anything yet. I'm wanting to set up a 75, 90 or a 100 gallon rimless tank with LED lighting. Are tanks that size too big to begin with or are they what I should be looking at. Also don't know what else I need besides live sand and rocks and a filter system for coral.

Hello everyone, I'm not new to this hobby but I'm new to this site and need all the help I can get. I'm from the Salinas, Ca. Area.

Hello RC, just wanted to make a quick introduction. I'm just getting back into the hobby after an 18 year hiatus. When I was 14-15 years old, I had a 15g hexagon tank with a clown, trigger, grouper, a couple damsels, as well as a snowflake eel among others. Having rediscovered the hobby and pouring over the forums for the past several months, knowing what I know now, I can't believe the torture I likely put those first fish through! In any case, I've always believed in the motto "go big or go home", and so picked up a used 125 gallon glass tank. I am at the moment refinishing the stand and hoping to get things going soon. Thank you to all the knowledgeable reefers out there who take the time to help out others just starting out in the hobby, RC has been a great resource on so many questions I've had. See you around.

:fish2:Hey everybody new to the site and need some feedback. I currently have a 55g with hob skimmer and jbj lighting canister filter also have 3 power heads attached to a under gravel filter. I am considering building a sump under my display and with not much money I am wondering if I can use the canister filter as my overflow into the sump?

New to hobby

Hey, Names Chris. New to the hobby. I have been researching like crazy and think I am going with the innovative marine 38 gal., Radion Gen 2, and one ecotech m10. Friends say I am going over board for my first tank but I am considering these purchases as investments for the long haul. I would rather by good stuff that lasts longer than cheap stuff twice. Anyways, see you guys around the forum. Have enjoyed poking around it so far.

Hello!

Hello!

Good evening to all! My name is John and I am beginning my first build on a 75 gal reef tank with a 20 gal sump in the stand I built underneath. I have lots of questions even though I have been reading many, many different threads here on RC. Being on a budget, I figure to piece my system together with better/stronger equipment now rather then be forced to "upgrade" in the future when my tank actually has living fish, corals, and other sea life in it. I look forward to learning and growing with RC!

Hi I'm shane.

I've been doing saltwater on and off for 3 years. I just upgraded to 54 gal corner tank with overflow. Not using overflow right now because of fact never used a sump before. This week I just added the water. 60lbs of live sand, about 30lbs of base rock, 60lbs of live Fiji rock. I am going to cycle that for 3-4 weeks before adding cleaner crew and transferring my blue hippo and law mower Benny to tank. Currently just purchased LED 120watt which I'm going to hang over tabk and attempt for some coral.

Ok. An intro thread. I will take the plunge.

I have been keeping freshwater fish for years... I currently have 3 tanks scattered throughout the house in use (and 2 more waiting to be set up).

I decided I wanted a saltwater tank for this past Christmas because I eventually would like to get an octopus, and that doesn't strike me as a good starter life. I was planning on doing just live rock and fish because I didn't want to have to deal with the extra lighting and such for the reef, but then when I started looking at the fish I decided I wanted a clown, and for the clown I wanted an anemone, and that brought me to similar conditions for corals, so my focus has now changed.

My tank has been running a few months, and is already teeming with life, mostly from the live rock. The only creatures I have added are 2 spotted cardinals, 4 turbo snails, a sea hare, 2 blue legged hermits and 3 emerald crabs.

Hi every one my name is Fernando and just wanted to say hi and thanks to every one for all the help that I get from this site. I've been reading a lot for the past 2 years every time I wanted to know anything about our hobby. now I read some body asking for something that I know how or I know that I can help after two years I decided on been part of it. I've been in this hobby for two years I started with a 55 gal fish only. then added corals when my tank was ready for them. now I have a rare 135 gal 6 ft long. 55 gal sump refugium with reef octopus skimmer mix reef and coral. lps and sps and my old 55gal with starfish and fish only.
THANKS EVERY ONE!!!!!

Hi there,

My name's Chris. My wife and I have run a total of 3 FOWLR tanks over the last 8-9 years, ranging in size from 20-30 gallons. We just recently started our first "big tank" endeavor, a 6' 125 gallon that we hope to aquascape and fill this weekend. It'll be out first reef - looking forward to it and being a member of this community!

Hi

I've recently joined Reef Central to get some tips and advice.

Myself and Partner have recently setup smallish 60 Litre marine tank to help get us into the hobby.

We keeping invertabrates at the moment and possibly corals at a later date.

Hey everyone! I have had a 28 Nano for a couple years now and just upgraded to a 24x48 120, she just started her cycle last Saturday. Spent most of my time on 3reef and was amazed when I saw the number of people online here at one time.
