Hey guys, I'm Zack. New to the hobby and despite having the goldfish tanks from my early years I hope to soon get a system set-up and running, and then work on my first reef tank.

Aren't golfish considered reef safe---I'll have to check that out with water keeper:lol:

Welcome. Feather dusters are pretty commonly found on live rock and to the best of my knowledge they dont hurt anything.

that is correct tbone--they are good water filterers

to use the welcome avitar type the word "welcome" between two brackets [ ]

Hello All, I am relatively new to the hobby (6 months or so), and just discovered RC. I have always wanted to set up a reef tank, but a scuba diving trip to Bonair put me over the top. Living in Sacramento, it is tough to get anywhere near a coral reef so I decided to try and build one in my living room.

I am what you might consider a do it your self kind of a guy so I decided to build a tank from scratch. I drew up plans for a 120 gallon tank and had a local plexiglass shop cut some pieces to match my specs and the rest is history. Now I have 1000 pounds of water in a beautiful cube next to my TV.

Now I'm just trying to make stuff grow in it. Hopefully this site can help with that because while I'm good with a hammer I'm still getting my bearings with the chemistry.

Would love to see some photos of your setup. Could you start your own build thread and post some there?
The reef chemistry forum is excellent for getting your bearings on the chemistry.
What kind of tank do you have---fowlr or mixed reef etc?---that can make a difference on the chemistry that you need to know.

Sorry, didn't see this until today. While not new, I first posted here yesterday. I am a sidelined by injury marathon runner, who has been turning his attention the last few months to learning as much as possible and preparing to convert a 29 gallon tank in to a small reef that will eventually be dominated by SPS. I am on a shoestring budget, but believe that a poor man can truly only afford the best, so this project will likely take me 6 months. I will document it in pictures and post when I am ready to put it all together. In fact once I get the stand built I will probably fill it with FW while I accumulate needed gear. Looking forward to picking brains here!

Hey everyone! Totally new to this hobby and I am here to learn a lot. Just picked up a 20 long with hood, light, Penguin Bio-wheel 200 filter, power head, and stand for literally $30 and a cup of ice cream. :D Reading up on what other supplies I need to get started. Great site!

Hi - I'm Michael and I've been doing this for about 2.5 years now. Currently confining my activities to two Nano-Cube 12 tanks ... one DX and one regular.

Hello RC, I'm Taylor. I have recently taken an interest in salt water tanks. I do not own one at the moment but am trying to learn as much as possible before i start. I am a student at Oregon State University. Anyways, just wanted to introduce myself and say hey.

Hello all! My name is Kari aka "irie one", i am pretty new to the hobby, i did play around with a 20 gal when i was in high school w mainly just fish, did have a flame, scallop, banded shrimp, pink cucumber, which i would love to find now that i know a lil more just havent run into any at my LFS (learning ur lingo :)) but like i said i was in high school n had a lot of more important things to do im sure rather than learn about fish, sarcasm, but i did learn a little.
anyway i now have a 30 gal "aquapod" which my friend gave to me with about 15 lbs of live rock that i have had set up for about 5 months the type of tank it is is where the filter, pump, n all that stuff is built right into the tank. i recently had a problem with the temp of the water because of how the hood is built w the balace enclosed w no air getting to it but solved that.
my first fish was a maroone clown, which i still have, and i love him by the way, after some experementing on my own i lost a marble star, i shouldnt have put in so soon, i know now, now i have been reasearching and getting advise from ur site, friends, and LFS, and doing thinks the right way the first time (hopefuly) and my tank is doing really well, again i think. i currently have the rock still, which has grown a lot of life since i have had it, a very small puls. xenia, that i have had for about 2 weeks only, a feather duster, that i got the same day as the xenia, thats the newest stuff though...... a green bubble anenomae (i think), i will send a pic, flame scallop who is doing well despie what i have heard about them not doing well in captivity, a marroone clown, which was my first fish, mandrin goby, which was the next fish, 3 weeks after the clown, who is also thriving for such a new tank i have been told, he eats sooo good, and a lawnmower bleny who i have had for about a month
but hes out of algae, should i keep him?
i havent lost any fish so far except a tiny blue hippo, who i new was sick when i got him but my hardheaded friend wouldnt believe me so i got it and it died, like i knew it would, last time that will happen. i also had a trial and error w a bicolor dotyback and a banded shrimp, which i gave back to the LFS ( i want a peaceful tank). anyway thats that. how do u think i am doing so far? i am going to try to send some pics. oh and ...i dont want to forget to tell u i have found ur site really helpful and easier to use than some other ones i was checking out, Tanks a lot
:-) ..........wow that was a long message. sorry. did i go overboard?

I am new to Reef Central and wanted to drop in and say hi. I've been an avid aquarium enthusiast for 10+ years, but I am just now getting to the salty side. At one time, I had 5 tanks running at once. A 10g, 30g, 55g, 55g, and 150g. I recently moved to Okinawa and had to downgrade to one 75g tank. I have been collecting equipment for the past 6 months and am an overflow and a heater away from fill up. I'm also knee deep in the middle of constructing a stand and canopy.
