Re: Re: Newby here. Great forum!

all the praise for keeping this site running goes to Water Keeper who does everything around here and still manages to joke about it
Sure, If that is the case the new site software update will be a long, long time in coming as I know nothing about setting up a vbulletin web site. Also, the new issue of RK had only minor input from myself and was only made possible from the great work of people like Skipper, MalHavoc, der_wille_zur_macht, hollback Hop, and Lisa D, to name a few.

Not all the people that work to make RC the great board that it is are in the roll of giving advise and these very important roles are often transparent. Without their support RC could never be where it is today. I should also mention that Ryan Baker, the man behind keeping RC afloat is often overlooked as he is busy running things and does not post often on the main forums.

Finally, we have many great members, like the Capn and Michael, who day after day field questions and greet people. Their role is as important to this board as are those of the staff and TRC.

Hey all

newbie to the forum here, just wanted to say whats up.

I am pretty new to the reef keeping hobby, but i have read and learned a lot in the last 8 months that my tank has been running (set up in December 2008). I have also been through my fair share of hiccups with fish, maintenance and much more. Currently I am battling an almost uncontrollable hair algae bloom, but im doing the best I can

I have a 37 gal tall tank, coralife 150w hqi clamp on, and a DIY algae scrubber that I just installed. I have 1 watchman goby, 1 purple fire fish, 1 green chromis, and a longnose hawkfish.

Hoping to learns some good stuff here. Thanks guys!

hey jauld :)

welcome to the forum, have you got any pictures or more information on your diy scrubber?

yes, I have many pictures actually. I am actually going to chronicle the whole thing, 1 picture a day. Apparently it will only take about 8-12 weeks to completely clear an algae ridden tank as per the people who told me about it.

here is what it looks like.

ah yes, ive seen similar before, doesnt the screen need to be touching the water? and you need a little more flow across the screen to make it work as well, id up the flow a little or try to spread it abit more evenly :)

Actually the flow is perfect. There is a formula that for every inch across the sheet is, you need 35 gph to maximize the flow. Everything is measured out to spec, but the reason the flow is uneven is because I actually have 3 sheets put together, which is making flow a little weird. As algae grows it will spread where it needs to though. And yes, it is too short, but I just havnt had the chance to extend it yet. This system is only 2 days old and that sheet I just installed last night =)

not at all jauld---this is what this site thrives on ---discussion and sharing of insights;)
Could I make the suggestion that you start a thread on here if you are going to add pics of your progress.
You have an excellent setup and unfortunately alot of good ideas get lost in long threads like this one.

Hello everyone,
Been around freshwater tanks for a few years but I am getting bored and ready for salt.

I was just given my first salt tank a 12gal JBJ cube by my brother in law and its happily cycling in the living room. The wife almost lost it from smell the tank was putting off for the first few days.

Can't wait to get some corals in there!

Hi CC
[welcome]

I mentioned on how you know that LR is curing several years ago when I wrote-

  • A man wearing a black suit drives up in a hearse and asks if he can remove the deceased
  • You neighbors put up a sign in your yard saying "Bates Motel"
  • Your spouse, who wasn't into this saltwater thing in the first place, has their lawyer draw up divorce papers on the constitutional grounds of cruel and unusual punishment

:D

Ill put one together pretty soon. I just want to have a decent base of pics and make sure it actually works before I start advertising ;)

Just checking in, as my SN says, I am Michael. I live out in Porter (Chesterton) Indiana. I am re-introducing myself to the hobby with a 90g reef ready I am putting in the wall between my Kitchen and dinning room.
