Hey everyone I realized I joined and started posting without introducing myself. My name is Josh and I live in Olathe, Kansas. I have been keeping freshwater aquariums for 2 years now but recently purchased a solana in march and got it up and running. I'm still slowly stocking it, but I definitely am looking forward to one day getting a bigger tank to have more room in. Unfortunately I am a broke college student so I will have to be patient on the upgrades. I love this site and am thankful that there are so many people willing to answer my questions.

Greetings. I've been a fish lover for over 10 years with multi tank setups (fresh and some saltwater) between 55 and 150 in size. I've spent the majority of my time in the freshwater (cichlid) arena and have only had a single go at saltwater in my 75 tank and Im attempting a comeback but taking it very slow. I have about 6-9 months (moving to a bigger house) to plan for my new setup so many of my posts will be to ask for guidance and perspective from those who are seasoned in the reef tank space.

Brown algae

Brown algae

Hell-o everybody. My name is Frank and I'm new to this site. We have a 29 gallon biocube of about 2 and a half years. Recently and fairly suddenly, a brown algae has made it's presence known in a big way first covering the gravel on the bottom and now just about everything else. Does anybody know how to get rid of it?

Hello All, my name is Adam. Not so new to the forum but just joining now. I do not have an aquarium yet but am doing my homework to get one going in the next year.

Hi there, I am from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan & am dipping my toes into the SW world. I currently have an 80 gal FW with angels and assorted community fish as well as a 45 gal with 3 axolotls. Plan on starting a 10 gal nano tank with soft corals & 1-2 fish (maybe some inverts too). I am sure that I will be asking for advice as this progresses.

Greetings,
Just getting my feet wet in SW. I had a 75g planted Amazon tank until I moved. This week I was visiting the lfs here in Anchorage to look into purchasing the remaining pieces I would need to finish putting together a 55g setup I just acquired. I made the mistake of asking about SW and nano stuff. Ended up going home with a used setup of a 20g w/stand, power head, HOB, heater, new live sand stuff, and salt. This evening I went back to the lfs to get cured LR some hermit crabs and some snails. He also sent me home with a couple of polyps that seem to be doing well. There was also a starfish attached to one of the rocks that made its appearance after I put the rocks in the water. It's about the size of a penny. Specific gravity is at about 1.024.

Looking forward to sucking up all of the knowledge here! Always been fascinated with SW but never got into it because of money.

Hi Everyone, My name is Omar, I am 38 y/o. I purchased a 20 gal. tank about a month ago. It has live rocks and live sand since day one. I did some mistake during the first month of changing the live rocks and disturbing the sand many times for re-scaping the tank few times. I believe I changed the rocks after having some diatom manifestation that I didn't know if it was good or bad at the time.
few weeks ago I added 3 blue damsels, 5 hermit crabs, 2 Mexican snails...They're still alive and kicking.
Then two days ago I got 2 clown fishes, a cleaner shrimp, and couple more snails, and emerald crab. The damsels immediately began attacking the clown fish, so I decided to take them back to the aquarium. and got a purple fire fish instead.
Anyways, changed about 50% of water once during the month. The diatom are almost non existing. my problem is that the nitrate level has been always high ( 80 ppm), I use "(API) Saltwater master test kit" ( pH, Ammonia, Nitrites, and Nitrates)
I tested the water today, after disturbing the sand and the rock formation yesterday to get the damsels out. My test results between last week and today are as follows:
1. pH was 8.0 went down to 7.8 .
2. Ammonia was 0, today is 0.25 .
3. nitrites was under 0.25 ppm, Now it's 0.50 ppm.
4. Nitrates started as 80 ppm, then last week was between 40-80 ppm and is still in this range.
5. Specific gravity has always been between 1.024 -1.026) " Is that ok?"
6. water temperature is set to 78 ?!? so the thermometer's readings has always been 77.9, didn't change a lot ( 0.1 ) more or less>

Today I was visiting an aquarium store near by. they had the " red sea" Reef Mature Pro kit on clearance and I got , as I got home I began wondering if such a kit can be used in a tank that already has live creatures in it or not?? I would really appreciate an answer to this question. Thank you .

I'm Robert, I work at a science center and inherited the salt water touch tank when the previous care taker decided to just walk out one day. So I have been at this for two months drawing on my fresh water experience and want to expand my knowledge to make the tank as healthy as it can be.

Hello!

Hello!

Hi. I'm Mrs.4444 (Fours). My husband always loved his saltwater aquariums but had a dream of owning a reef system, so we recently (about a month ago) set one up. Because he's gone a lot, I decided I should start getting serious about learning. Until this week, I bascially knew nothing about salt water aquariums. I'm open to any recommended readings but have also spent several hours watching YouTube videos about things like sumps, fish, corals, feeding, etc. It's nice to "meet" you!

Here's what our aquarium looks like so far: https://youtu.be/YhF80Asyojk
