New to this hobby

Hello all,

I am brand new to saltwater tanks and for the 2 months we have had our tank, we have enjoyed it very much. We have a Marineland 90g single overflow, Current Plus LED light, 30L sump, Mag 9 return pump, Eshopps 300 series skimmer and 90+ pounds of live rock.

Being new to the hobby, we hit the ground running and may have overstocked our tank, but we are working on straightening that out. Our inhabitants are:

2 x clowns
3 x cardinals
1 x Green Spotted Dragonet
1 x Coral Beauty
1 x blue spotted puffer
1 x Diamond Watchman Goby

Cleaning crew consists of 2 cleaner shrimp, 3 emerald crabs and some assorted hermit crabs and snails with 2 of the snails being turbos.

We started the tank with 90+ pounds of fully cured live rock, 40 pounds of live sand and RODI saltwater. We never really saw ammonia get too high waiting for it to cycle, so I feel we did well in setup and such. I did place a piece of shrimp in the tank to begin the cycle. I assume, due to our overstocking the tank, our nitrates are running in the 15-20 range, but everything else is normal according to everyone I talk to. We have stocked copepods twice and our Dragonet seems to be doing well, so I believe we were succesful.

I recently purchased a Buckeye Hydro RODI system and I am getting the hang on that now. It has taken some work, but I think I finally ironed out the details, or so I hope.

Either way, I can't wait to get involved with this forum and hopefully learn something and meet some good people!

Thanks!
Glenn

Sorry if I mess this up but, Just introducing myself. My name is Katie and I am trying to set up a small reef tank for myself and my 5 year old daughter. I am thinking about getting a Top Fin 20 gallon starter kit with the LED light setup for a ridiculously cheap price. Any ideas on my next steps would be greatly appreciated. I am on a tight budget right now, but need a hobby to keep my mind busy for awhile. Hoping to go to mainly LPS and Zoas in my tank eventually. Thank you everyone and I'm excited to get started.

Hi all am new to the hobby looking forward to getting my 65 gallon tank up in running. Am fairly lost when it comes to this stuff. But, I think it is going to be a great hobby

Hey everyone,

My name is Dave and I'm a Reefaholic. I'm new at this and afraid I'm going overboard on my tank.

This is what I have so far.

125 Aqueon reef ready tank with glass tops
Marineland Monterey cabinet and canopy
Custom built Emereld39 sump -
Dimensions 36x15x16, Skimmer: 10.5" x 14.5" Refugium:11" x 14.5" Return: 6" x 14.5"
Apex Controller
150lbs of dry rock
2 - Zetlight 6600A Led lights
(Did I make a mistake here by not buying 3 Zetlight 6500A lights instead?)

On the buying block
2-Maxspect Gyre XF150
2-Icecap Maxspect Gyre 150 interface module

I'm still on the fence on what size protein skimmer I should buy. It's going to be a Bubble Magus 7 or 9 both will have a sicce pump, also what size return pump to buy and type of sand. I have read a ton of threads on sand, pumps and protein skimmers and I still need help on what to buy.

Thank You for reading my post

I'm new, so I'm introducing myself. Right here. Right now.

HI! I am already a member of ********* as Eel Steve, but I find myself googling a bunch of stuff, and often times ending up on links to threads on here so I figure....time to quit putting it off!

So I'm very new to the hobby. I am an admirer of the comedy/ fish tank game call in show Fish center (Fishcenter.com) and it made me get a bug up my butt about getting an eel about 5 months ago.

I don't have the eel yet. I actually have him planned for Halloween pickup actually. But oh man. This hobby is awesome, and I have gone from zero to...let me show you this thing. Please keep in mind my fish tank experience before this was betta bowls.

And now. This thing.

I'm so proud of it. I'm not artistic at ALL, and I did all that rockscaping myself.

It's currently populated by 2 damsels (yellowtail and an azure), a transitional male melanarus, a pretty fully grown (5 inches?) diamond watchmen goby, and I JUST ADDED on Saturday this adddddorrrable blue spotted puffer. It's pretty young too, so it's only going to get more vibrant.

*sigh* I have a little piece of paradise in my study and I love this. I'm adding my first corals this week - a xenia colony, and a frag of zoa. Wish me luck!

P.s. here are my stats.

Display tank - 72 gallon FOWLR
29 gallon sump
Aqua C Urchin Pro

150+ lbs of live rock

I also have a 20 gallon specimen tank for a mantis (Caribbean rock smasher)

Hi my name is Jordan, I'm a college student who has had a few nano tanks a couple years back, but am starting fresh with a newly cycling 40 gallon Innovative Marine.

Gmorning. Getting to know the fun and amazing hobby of reefing. I've only been in it for about 2 years but I must say I am hooked. Currently own a 55 gal, little bit of everything, tank. Through trials and errors I have learned quite a bit and I enjoy the therapy and relaxation that my tank provides with its entire eco-system. As many have said the hobby is addictive and I am now cycling a 120 gal tank with dual overflow. Added to it I have a 40 gal sump with a massive protein skimmer and a return pump large enough to run two or three reactors while returning the water to the tank. I bough it all used so I don't know specifics of the equipment. I sure can use all the help available from all who have been doing it for a while as I know that I will be running into some situations in the near future. looking forward to the advice and comments from fellow reef keepers.

Acclimating to new forum. Hello all.

Acclimating to new forum. Hello all.

Introduction time: hi.

Newish tank: 16g plus a sump that adds 10g. Plenty of bells and whistles from ATO to razor lighting. My skimmer is tiny, a Tunze, and was going to upgrade but everything is seemingly working for my tank's "personality." Second to the aesthetics is the fun of maintaining the mini lab required to keep water parameters monitored. I love that stuff.

It's challenging to create different flow sections in such a small tank. Being longish, at 30", helped a lot and with rocks placed strategically, I'm able to maintain areas of low/med/and high flow with a Vortech mp10 on one side and a hydor return water reflector on the other. Kind of proud of that.

Tip: during power outages (while on back up battery) having one of those oscillating hydor reflectors is perfect since they are powered by the return flow through them and won't drain your battery.

Only corals, snails, and so-far some good hitchhikers (porcelain crab, spaghetti worms, small feather dusters, pineapple sponges, amphipods) with the coralline encrusted live rock. I was able to catch one isopod early on and a nudibranch that didn't look friendly. Haven't seen any more isos...

Expecting one chalk bass tomorrow. He/she should find a blinged out home. I may add a tailspot blenny later but that's about all I'd want in this sized tank.

Thanks for providing this forum. Looking forward to searching discussions.

Cheers.

Newbie to salt/marine

Newbie to salt/marine

After 10 years with freshwater, I have finally decided to join the "œdark side". I purchased a Fluval M90 as it seemed to have good reviews and was sort of "œnewbie" friendly. Plus the price was to hard to walk way from. I looked this set up 8 months ago but didn't like the price. My local LFS was clearing it out so I got it for 25% of the original price.

Now comes the hard part and a steep learning curve. As I move forward I will have loads of questions. If I have learned anything from my years in freshwater it is to go slow and do it right the first time.

My freshwater tanks are 120gl, 75 & 55.

Judi

Hi this is Reese, and I'm a Pisces. I'm new to Marine aquariums and look forward to the advice received from Reef Central forum. I've maintained Freshwater fish off and on for over 20 years. I have had success with 8-9 year old Red Tail sharks, and Tiger Barbs.

I'm excited and nervous. I want to start out simple

New to site...sort of

New to site...sort of

Hi,
I have kept aquariums 10+ years now. I'm trying to rehab my saltwater tank that crashed will I was away.

My question:
I decided to get an RO filter unit and installed it, but the instruction had no mention of not touching the RO membrane, as I found out later.
What can I do? Sterilize it or get a new one?
Or what thread can help me with this?

Hello everyone!

Newbie to the saltwater world here and just starting up a nano reef! Water params are looking good and I believe I'm ready to start introducing some CUC members! I do have an open thread in the Nano reef forum on which members to add if anyone would like to lend a helping hand ^.^
