Hello, newish to the hobby...
 Hi, I'm De and I might have joined the wrong forum, because my hobby is freshwater tanks. I found this while I was doing a search for information about getting licenses for becoming a wholesalers and such. Growing up, my family had always had an aquarium full of guppies. We also had some smaller ones with different fish. One of my favorites was a dwarf puffer. Anyway, I started my first tank (that I paid for and was completely my own) in my late teens. I worked in a pet shop in my early-mid 20s. My main area were tanks and ponds. It's been about 8 years since I last had an aquarium set up (I gave my last one away, along with the fish, because I hadn't found a good permanent living situation).
I started up again for my son. Caring for fish was something that was a huge thing in my family when I was growing up. It taught us responsibility and that there's no such thing as "just a fish" or "just a" something else. They have their own personalities and feelings. They feel happiness and stress just like we do. They get attached to take mates just like we do to those we spend time with and so on and, sometimes, they drive each other crazy, just like us humans.
Anyway, we chose guppies and corycats for our first tank and are about to start a nursery tank and a breeding tank. When I took on guppies, I knew that they would breed like crazy, because that was the type of fish that we had in the huge family tank that we had when I was growing up. At that point, I wasn't thinking of actually breeding them for profit, because I get attached to any living creature pretty easily (even house spiders...we name them).
However, the amount that we have is getting out of hand (it hasn't even been very long yet) and keeping them all just isn't going to work. I do have a passion for them, I take great care of them and there are two pet shops in town that I think could really benefit from me selling to them. I could sell at a lower price and I wouldn't need to charge delivery because I live five minutes from both shops.
I want to get a license to sell as a wholesaler, which, from what I can tell makes it so that I can also buy from other wholesalers. I want to buy from different wholesalers so that I can be sure that I don't have a bunch of inbred guppies. I don't have that problem yet because I've bought from two different shops and they buy from different wholesalers. You can tell because the guppies are very different (though beautiful) varieties. It hasn't been long enough for the inbreeding to start yet, but I want the fry to be separated before they are no longer fry and can have babies with mommy or daddy.
