If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

hi! i just joined the other day. I ve been reading here for years tho. great info.

I've been doing FW since i guess 04? mostly synodontis and plecos, some rams.

Then i decided to try a SW nano. Crazy right? cause everything i read said dont do small at first . It actually went ok. nice little nuvo 16 gal w a Kessil A150 .. all well till one night in middle of the night we heard something strange and sit up and say what is that? then we hear water pouring out. Tank cracked diagonally down the side. Saved everyone, corals and rock and fish , cause i had a SW QT set up w pajama cardinals in it that i was able to put them into temporarily .

Innovative Marine sent me a whole new bigger tank for free , not the curved glass side but the straight silconed ones. However at that point I was honestly scared and gun shy or "crack" shy to set it up, so I set up a 20 long i had in storage.

Should have done a bigger tank but didnt. So i am now a yr later setting up the 75 gal i have for the 20 long guys and the ten QT guys. I never really wanted to do the 75 cause I was afraid to drill it. And no one local drilled. And the Red Sea Max stuff is nice but so $$$.. and no local stores had anything drilled. ever! But we watched the you tube videos on drilling and we werent sure re tempered or what. Anyways i am doing the 75 gal sumpless. It is a week into cycle, so just sand, rocks (need to add more on days off) , heater, HOB Eshopps skimmer, HOB AC110, with chemipure elite, purigen and filter floss. And the hydras, 26 hd . which i am totally confused by the app. going to do a screen top also.

So hi!

**edited to add i also have a BRS RODI unit, and the 75 also has a koralia 1500 PH and i will move over the MP10 w battery backup thats on the 20 long. Unknown if that will be enough PHs tho?***

Hello

Hello

Hey everyone I'm old in the fish hobby but brand new in the salt water part. It's an entirely different monster, there's actually a ton of cool information to know and read. Unfortunately being new so far big mistake one lighting. I didn't put enough research in and dumped the money on a marine orbit pro.... Other than that all is well with my 110 gallon with 40 gal sump. Past my cycle have two clowns in quarantine. Any recommendations on a somewhat cheap light supplementation to this from the experienced guys? Could I pick up a single t5 48" somewhere. My light puts out some par but not very much as the tank goes down. My only real estate now I believe is the top 15". Thanks. I will add I'm the odd ball Canadian on here

Hi everyone. I have been keeping saltwater fish for three years now, but just started a fish-less reef 45 gallon cube today. I had a Kenya tree and a daisy polyp in my 90 gallon tank but after 2 months my Raccoon Butterfly fish decided he would eat them. I really would like to start a mixed SPS and soft tank with the new 45G and suggestions?

What's up. Guys make sure you check out my posts because I am only 13 and I have a nano tank 3 gal and a 55 gal reef tank in my bedroom. Very pricy cause my parents make me buy stuff my self :(. So there are some things I am going to need help with. BYeeeee

Hello! I did this a little out of order I guess because I posted my questions first. Whoops! I'm a semi-experienced freshwater aquarist who is transitioning to saltwater for my new tank. I had a freshwater 30 gallon up for about four years before I moved so I know the basics, but a lot of the saltwater stuff seems very foreign. I've been reading this forum and a few others for a couple of weeks trying to figure things out, but I've decided to finally dip my toes in the salty water!

Hello!

Hello!

I'm a newbie to saltwater, coming from freshwater setups. I have a 20 gallon Long tank that I started cycling on Monday. I guess I will post asking for suggestions on my setup in a separate thread, but just wanted to introduce myself! :fish1:

Hi all,

I am new to the forum. I recently setup a 35 gallon aquarium, which is currently cycling. Specs are as follows

Lighting : AI Vega
SKimmer: reef octopus rated for 75 gallons
Return pump : rio 7
Circulation pump: wp 25 jebao
Controller : apex
Dosing: 2 part on a timer ( haven't started it yet)
Carbon reactor and go reactor

I plan to mainly have an sps dominated reef. I love milli's and plan to have various colors.

Thanks,

Hi All,

My name is Jessica. I am new to owning a tank of my own. I have been doing research for months and there is just so much out there and so much to learn I plan to continue to do research as I am setting up my tank but wanted some input on my thoughts so far as I would like to start ordering stuff and slowly get it up and running.

I recently bought a 36 gal bow front tank- 30 1/4"x 15.5"x 20 7/8"

I would like to go with a shallow sand bed 1-2 inches. My dad has given me a ton of rock that was in his hex tank he took down. (not sure how many lbs) I am thinking of stocking with LPS and softies. My dad is already offering up his blue hippo tang, and I was thinking of a pair of clowns, a wrasse and a blenny. Of course getting a good clean up crew.

As far as lighting I'm thinking of going with the Echotech Radion XR30w Gen 3.
Pumps I was thinking 2 Hydor Koralia 850's.
RO/DI System-Marine Depot KleanWater 4 stage 100 GPD with TDS Meter
Salt-Instant Ocean

I still need to look into test kits, a refractometer, a heater and a HOB Protein Skimmer. My dad gave me his old one but I am thinking I would like to purchase new just not sure what I want yet.

I know there is still a lot more to research and there are so many products out there I am researching and looking over reviews to get good quality products that will last me. Any input would be greatly appreciated :)

Coming Back

Coming Back

Hello all
My name is Neil and I'm getting back into reefing after a long 2+ year break. Had to break down a 72g bow because I moved. It had be running for almost 15 years. Just settled back down into a new house on Long Island, NY and gearing up to set up a 180g. Purchased tank, stand and canopy from Custom Aquariums in Wisconsin. Takes 6-8 weeks and hope to get delivery in the next 2 weeks. So far I've purchased the following:
3 XR30 radions
2 MP40's
1 vectra L1
Simplicity 320dc

Will be purchasing live sand and rock from Richard at TBS. Used him the first time around and was very happy. Looking at the Apex standard or lab grade but not purchased yet. Any suggestions would be welcome. Any other must have equipment please let me know.

New to Reef Hobby

New to Reef Hobby

Greetings. My name is Phil. I am in NE CT. Wanted to become a S/W aquarist in my teens, but it was very complicated back then. Started up my first tank on DEC 3, 2015. 40-gal breeder. Used synthetic salt mix with Distilled H2O and added some cured live rock, along with "Life Rock (tm) ....purchased at store in Vernon, CT (Wet Pets)....after a month, I have gone through brown algae diatom bloom, lost a few fish and zoanthid frags, but have one very hardy ocellaris clownfish that is thriving, along with the "cleaner crew" purchased from LiveAquaria.com.
My question to the group is how, and how many live corals to add to a modest 40g breeder to keep healthy? I have a top shelf hang-on filter with activated carbon, sponge and bio-bag...live rock, Fiji substrate....and maintaining excellent parameters in salinity/specific gravity/ammonia/PH/Nitrite/Nitrate levels thus far....Just want to have some soft and hard corals. My lights are outstanding LED system from Orbit Marine............ Thanks for anyone's input.

Phil
