If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hey everyone. My name is Dan, I'm from London UK and I have began my reef experience by converting a 42L fluval edge into a reef tank.

Been reading the forum and feel like I am learning things every day!

Hello RC Community here's my crazy story so far...last summer I got a 36g bowfront tank for my girls and added cichlids. Well, every time we went to the fish they wanted me to add saltwater fish and I refused. I even bought a 65g that I was going to do discus in. Funny thing, then I found a 57g rimless that a lady wanted out of her house on CL and I picked that up for free! It had a nice stand, good tank with no real noticable scratches and a sump and pump. With this I gave in to the salt water and set it up. I went thru the summer, fall, and winter with success and my 3 fish, hermits, snails and shrimp started to get boring. I wanted to go bigger as did the girls. Problem is what size to get? I found an oceanic 130g on CL cheap, a week later an acuantince was moving and asked if I wanted his 150g. I picked it up. Now I have a 57g set up 65g I never set up a 130g in the back patio and a 150g in the garage. All these tanks in so little time my wife was about to strangle me. So I bought a 40g breeder and set it up with the contents of the 57g. Sold the 57g for good $$ sold the 65g and still have a 130g and a 150g. I've been roaming this board for a long time and looked at what a lot of people suggested to get on size (bigger is better) and with my wife about to murder me I sold the 130g, gave the 150g back to my acuantince and bought a 210g off CL with sump and pump for $400. All this in less than a year and I feel like it will never get set up. I am currently in the process of building my stand which I will post all pics thru the process here. Well that's all for now and excited to be able to find out so much on this board.

I'm Will, and I live in Central Florida. I used to work at a LPS 3 years ago and learned a little about saltwater fish and was hooked. Still only one tank 3 years later, a Fluval Chi 6.6 gallon.

Im 31 now and have my friend to thank for the knowledge he has given me getting this tank going.

I recently had a Starfire custom rimless tank made for roughly $350. 11 gallons is as big as ill go.

Looking forward to learning and sharing with you all in this amazing hobby!

Hello all!

I'm new to saltwater altogether and have really jumped off the deep end into this hobby! Over the weekend I picked up two truck loads of stuff from someone
getting out of the hobby for a great price.
180 gallon glass 6x2x2' tank, two aquacontrollers, two direct connect 8's, about 150-200 lb of live rock, 2" of crushed coral substrate, 180 gallon custom acrylic sump, 55 gallon sump, octopus skimmer, phosban reactor with pump, two 400w metal halide lights with ballasts, four 48" actinic HO T5 lights (two blue two white), two ecotec mp40's (might be the mp60's), a half dozen large pumps (a few of which are new), stal, test kits, kalk and a kalkwasser, wavemaker setup, a Sealine SL-300A chiller, UV treatment canister thing, RO/DI filter setup, calcium reactor, CO2 tank and regulators, and a few boxes of heaters, air pumps, and all kinds of stuff I haven't had a chance to sift through yet!

I dropped the tomato clown and star fish off at my LFS for them to care for.

So for now, I'm soaking in all the information possible on this forum while waiting for my cabinet maker to complete the stand/canopy and am dropping the tank off to a local glass company to have them throw some new silicone on the inside edges for me as I'd rather someone with experience do it :p

I've already gained a lot of information from this forum over the past few weeks of research and look forward to diving into this rewarding hobby :)

Hello,

I'm new to the hobby and to the community. After spending a year taking care of a tiny glo-fish tank for my son (high maintenance, little reward), I finally decided to dive into the saltwater arena. Actually, I haven't gotten my feet wet quite yet...I've spent the last 6 weeks reading everything I can get my hands on to prepare for this. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of this great community.

Hello Everyone,
Im Jonez from FL. I am currently upgrading to a 180 gal. I have a 65 gal and 40 gal breeder both mixed reef up and running that were both in wall tank. Now they have been moved out of the way to make room for my 180. Ive been in the hobby for over 4 years now and love the DIY side of reefing. Ive learned a ton from the community and cant wait to post and hopefully help others as much as everyone here has helped me!

Been in the hobby for about 9months. I have a 65gallon Fish and coral soon to be only fish if I cant get my act together. I have been looseing coarals and anemones like crazy over the last two months. I just found out today that my refractometer was not calibrated ....... so my SG was terribly low1.015 all the while I thought it is was a at a perfect 1.025

casualties of my stupidity....bubble tip anemone, Brain coral(actually the Brain is recovering in another tank) Frogspawn is on its death bed, a Bubble coral. My looks bad but I hope it will recover and zoanthids look terrible and I also hope they will recover.

I did an emergency water change of 5gallons with an elevated salt content. This raised my SG to 1.020 I was told not to raise the salt too fast.....

Hey, hawk!

Please list your perimeters and corals. As well as your filtration.
Also, your tank isn't quite big enough for a Yellow Tang. You need at least 100 Gallons, 120 is recommended.

Another Newbi - Here we go again

Hi everyone, I prefer to be called Kymaro, I'm a stay at home Mom (not as easy as it sounds). I have started a new 46g N+ H20, I had one about 10 years ago, but it all seems so new this time around. I won't take up to much time here - I know I'm 1:100000..... for someone to read and say hello. So Hello everyone :lolspin:

Hi VMJ 21

I am just about to start a glo fish tank for my kids at the same time as a reef tank for myself.

Hi, I'm Ian! I've been interested with having a saltwater tank, as well as jellyfish when I was younger. I've decided to fulfill my childhood dream and I'm planning out a reef aquarium.

I have owned freshwater tanks continuously for probably 5-6 years! I've always been interested in invertebrates and I currently have a 15 gallon tank filled with java moss and Red Cherry Shrimp.

Hello new member here, just added fish to my first saltwater tank this weekend. i have a 29g half moon tank. I also have 3 cichlid tanks that are slowly being convered to salt water.

My name is Andy and after about a 10-yr hiatus, got back into the hobby about 2 years ago. I used to have several freshwater tanks in the 90's, then tried FOWLR, and now am attempting a reef tank. I have a 93 gallon cube with a trigger cube sump as well as a 20 gallon long.

Hello everyone!

I'm totally new to saltwater aquariums and I am just beginning the initial planning stages for my tank.

I was inspired because I have a student who is giving me a 55 gallon aquarium (is that too small?) and I decided that I was going to go ahead and jump into the salty side of the pool after having many freshwater tanks throughout my life. I am just starting to plan for this and learn about things like sumps and protein skimmers... I want to make sure I learn as much as I can so that I can do this right.

Do you guys have any suggestions on books or other things that I can use to learn from? Is there a place that I can view sample aquarium setups?

Thanks everyone, I'm looking forward to learning and diving into this awesome hobby!

Hello fellow newbies. My name is Keith, and I am starting a 120 gallon build. First time with SW, and looking forward to the challenge, and rewards. I had 5 cichlid tanks, and a mixed freshwater tank, so no stranger to caring for creatures of the sea. I am in the process of building my stand, tank is on its way from Miracles, 48x24x24, 5/8" glass, starfire, and drilled for Reef Savvy overflow, also, I already have the sump from Lifereef. I just want to make the right choices on equipment, and not buy something I might regret. My biggest pieces I haven't decided on yet are lighting, and powerheads. If anyone has thoughts on these items please let me know.

Thanks all, hope to hear from everyone!
