Welcome, dry rock and dry sand are a great way to go as far as prevention of undesirable elements, pests etc, I would use a piece of live rock as a seed for bacteria rather than live sand as long as you trust the source of the rock. You may also consider using some rock from a source such as Tampa bay saltwater, if you decide to go that direction. If you're unsure about your source cycling without seed rock works just as well it will just take a week or two longer. Well worth the peace of mind. You will get many opinions on this, read a lot and use your judgement.Hello everyone! I am new to the forum but not new to the hobby. I was hot and heavy in cichlids for a few years but got too busy and sold everything a few years ago. Now I'm back and want to get into saltwater. I am planning to pick up a 75 gallon fw tank with a 55 gal sump this friday. I know I need some essentials and have been researching like crazy! I'm trying to get into saltwater with as low a cost as possible (which is why I'm piecing together a fw tank instead of buying a sw outright). I saw the poll on here about the Sand and Rock. I see it's much cheaper to buy dry rock and dry sand. If I do so, how long would it take to cycle my tank? Also, I could probably buy some dry rock and live sand... would that speed up the cycle drastically? Is it worth it? Or could I buy one bag of live sand and the rest dry... with dry rock?
RevisedHello RC
I'm new to the saltwater. I've been doing FW 10gal, 30gal, and 55gal tank for 11 years. I was using a fluval 305 canister. I just bought a used 290gal tank and stand with 2 corner overflow also came with chiller, uv, halide's and T5's, skimmer asm gc9, trigger system ruby36s, blueline 70 pump, and about 300 lbs dry live rock all for $600. The guy sold it needed the money. I resealed tank 2 weeks ago. That was not fun. I thought doing a 55gal was bad. I just got my ro/di system today. Just need to set up a ro/di and saltwater mixing station and start making to start curing rock. I just drew up design for a metal stand and sent to welder to give me an estimate. The stand that came with I don't like it and looks weak and some rotting. I want something that I know that would hold the weight. I'm trying to sell the older equipment to help pay for more energy efficient equipment. So that's the story of the beginning of my adventure.
