If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Just wanted to say hi!

Just wanted to say hi!

Just wanted to say hello to everyone here. I have been keeping fresh water tanks for a while now, have 4 of them in my house. I have my 72g goldfish tank, my 20g tropical tank, 10g shrimp tank, and a 1/2g nano tank.

I have been wanting to get a reef tank for quite a long time now. Finally just got really serious about researching and will be looking around this website for a while before I make any purchases. I will probably be going around various threads and bothering people. Just wanted to say hello and how damn excited I am to start!

Apologies, I kinda introduced myself with a post here in the newbie section.

I am absolutely new to the hobby, have always wanted to try it. Maybe a mistake, but I am picking up a 55 gal tank from a neighbor, probably tonight or tomorrow night. It is a complete setup, just hasn't been run for a bit. Needs cleaning and some TLC (getting the entire wood cabinet setup, tank, sponge filters, lights, backup systems for aeration, all kinds of stuff - for $200. Can't turn it down. I know I will probably replace some of the equipment with newer stuff, but oh well... this is finally pushing me into getting a tank.

Aloha!

Hello my name is Darien and my wife's name is Marisa, we have a 75 gallon wanna be mixed reef with a back rock wall. We're from San Antonio and love it here besides the weather, and are expecting our first child:)

Hi RC - I been keeping a small, planted 10G freshwater tank for a few years and finally decided to take the leap to a salt water fish tank. I've always felt that salt water was going to be a lot more work with all the chemistry, pumps, and everything but seeing what people are able to do and keep has inspired me to go for it. I'll probably be lurking around and trying to soak up some collective knowledge.

Congrats on the new family, Darmar7812!

Hello guys,
I'm very new to the saltwater hobby but has spent over a decade on freshwater, especially cichlids. I'm going to build my first tank soon after my wife gives the OK to the saltwater budget proposal Ha ha ha (the married life meh :sad1:) ... so meanwhile i spend my time learning from forums and veterans like you guys here. Hope i can build my tank soon. :hb2:

Pleased to meet you guys...

Welcome, I to came from freshwater and cichlids, I did mostly planted tanks but did have an African once (do you prefer planted or african?) Gotta love having to run everything by a financial advisor lol. This site has a wealth of information. From my experience if you combine the care requirements of both you should be ok with a reef, ie light requirements and using the plants for nutrient consumption (refugium) along with the hard water chemistry from the African all that's left is salinity

Hello everyone,

My name is Brian and I just recently pulled the trigger on a reef tank. I've been wanting one and doing research for months, and 2 weeks ago my older brother told me he was moving and didn't want to hassle with his tank. So I decided to pull the trigger and am now a happy owner of a 75 gallon reef tank with 6 fish and some coral that has been in place for a while.

Look forward to learning more about this hobby with you guys as time goes on.

Hi everyone,
Name is Kent. I'm not new to reefcentral. Been lurking and reading here off and on for the past 4 years soaking in info about a possible marine tank while maintaining planted fresh water. I just bit the bullet on March 2016 and got a Red Sea Reefer 170. Hope all will go well with the knowledge I got from here.
Please to meet you guys.

Howdy,

My name is John. I'm not new to RC either, joined back when I was 16, now 31 years old. I have had a 70 gallon reef and a 12g JBJ nano cube, also kept African cichlids before. Been out of the aquarium hobby altogether for 5-6 years and want to do a 20-45 reef setup. A lot has changed since the "old days" when I did it!

I live in Billings, MT now and my LFS has a 20 and a 45 rimless combo. They have the 20 priced at $300 including the very basic skimmer and LED lighting. Tempted to do that or the 45 at $400 although that one doesn't include lighting.

Hello all,

My name is Andrew. I am a bit of an odd member in that I am actually not a reef keeper but a planted tanker! However, lately I have come to realize and appreciate these two fishkeeping niches - I feel that us planted tank people can certainly learn a lot from the reef community. The reef keeper philosophy has so much to learn from - doing it right the first time and not cheaping out, considering all aspects of of the tank's ecosystem, etc.

But most of all, I never cease to be amazed by the equipment and technical know-how prevalent amongst reef keepers - you guys have found ways to automate just about everything! I think large reefs and planted tanks are similar in benefiting from the carefully planned use of fancy equipment and automation systems. Unfortunately the planted tank world is still slow to catch up on such things, with detailed information and threads on such matters far and few between.

I look forward to learning a lot here.

Hi all

Hi all

Hi all this is Ponraj from India,

I have just started to built my reef tank with 120gl. I have cured the rock and started to get some green plants over the rock. Can anyone guide me how to increase my calcium levels. I was doing the below,
water parameters, pH-7.9 ; salinity-35 ; alkalinity-10dkh ; nitrate-0 ; phosphate-0 ; calcium is getting to purple only in 30th drop in test kit.
having - SRO 3000 skimmer ; chiller JBJ arctica ; bio pellet reactor with reef octopus bio pellet media and seachem matrix carbon both in it.
giving calcium dosing with Seachem reef advantage together with 5ml of vinegar, giving two times dosing per day for the last whole week. no change in calcium. seeing some changes in the rocks getting more green plants on it.

Please find below the link of my thread which i have posted. please advise me.

Hello Andrew,
Quite on the contrary, i have had several African-American Cichlids tanks every now and then, but only once had the experience with planted tank and just quit it after massive black beard algae bloom. After all, i love rockscaping more. The reason i love cichlids is its biodiversity, i guess it's the same reason i'm going for reef tank... although my wife is more of an expense suppressor than a financial advisor, she actually does love to watch reef tanks, that's why i had a positive feeling about this

And yes, a fuge is definitely on my future plan. I want to utilize as much natural modules as possible, including a benthic zone beside a regular fuge (do you have one also?) Salinity is the bigger concern because although i'm living in the tropics, i'm nowhere near the coastal area which means it's simply harder to get quality seawater. In that case, i'll go for commercial saltmix instead.

Hi all, new to reefkeeping, been keeping tropical for about year with great success but always had my heart set on reef. I'm a novice, so please excuse the amount of questions I might ask!

I have been taken care of my two nemos in 16G tank for 8 years and upgraded its home to a new 25G Solona cube one month ago. I am adding more and more corals to the new tank and glad to learn stuff here!

Hi guys, I'm Kayvon. After a 7 year hiatus from the hobby, I got talked back into it by a good friend. I had a 60 gallon Saltwater fish only tank when I first started and had minimal success. Now being older and perhaps a bit wiser, I'm looking forward to enhancing my experience and knowledge and finally achieve my goal of keeping a thriving healthy reef/fish tank.

I have setup a 29 gallon nanotube that has completed cycling in the last month. I have a few Zoas, a "cleanup crew", Brittle Starfish, a Sandsifting Starfish, and a bunch of Chromises. I can't wait till I start stocking up, but I know patience wins at this game. I look forward to joining this community and learning a few things from my fellow tankers. :).

See you guys around
