If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello all in RC!!! Used to have a 120 reef tank running t-5 and refuge with a close-loop system. 12 years later, I feel as if the hobby has changed a lot and i think i'm ready to restart the journey. Was part of 3reef forum back then but we were always pulling threads from you guys so i figured id join and reorient myself amongst you all. Planning on starting a small humble 32 gal LED bio cube to get my feet wet (hopefully not literally) and then figuring out a larger more diy setup for the future.

Hello from Costa Rica

Hello from Costa Rica

Hi, I loved reef tanks since I was 15 years old, but never have one, now Im 50! and for my birthday my wife and son gave me a 135 Galons reef tank, beautiful!!, but my wife on her "try to do her best" filled the reef with corals, fishes and stones, sadly that beatiful setup came to disaster in just 2 or 3 weeks, the guy who sold her the tank never showed up again, water started to turn bad an all fishes died, I was trying to read and learn fast but it was late, only one red shrimp survived, after that and without worries of any living organism in my tank I started to learn, My wife asked me to sale the tank and I rejected that idea at once, first I bought an Apex system with PH, and ORP probes, there I found that my ORP was 135!!! which looks pretty low, then I setup my change water station for which I bought a 35 galon tank, I installed a water pump inside and made a recycle pvc tubing to mix water and salt (using tap Water, more on this later), I read that a guy who mixed the salt in 5 minutes filled its tank and all fishes died, I learned that salt and water molecules mixed together correctly after 5 or 6 hours of mixing and until water came sparkling clear, with that setup I started my tank again and everything started to looks much better.
I bought a test kit and found that my nitrates were around 30ppm which was way high, I kept changing water but no results, after 5 or 6 changes without changes I tested my Tap water and there I found that I got 30ppm!! I guy from a local store recommended me to buy a biopellets reactor but I decided to go RO/DI, now my tank has ORP over 400, fishes are happy and coral are growing like never before, sorry to write all this details but it may help someone who is interested to start into this amazing hobby.

Just started my membership thought I'd say hello. Been in the hobby roughly a year I have a 40 broader mixed reef with a tall 37 gallon upstream Refugium 20 long sump. Using two Kessil 160w's over 40 and 20k metal halide over upstream. Running three reactors off a manifold with bio pellets, Gfo, and carbon. Growing dragons breath in the upstream and chaeto in the fuge in sump. I'm always reading post and forums on here figured I should start an account looking to join any clubs in the Hampton roads area of VA.

Hey guys I'm new to the saltwater world. I have a 30 gallon nano reef setup so far and am stoked to be adding coral! Currently have candy apple zoa, pink zoa, pink mushroom, and green star polyp. Tanks mates include Picasso trigger, clown and hippo tang!

Hello All!

New here and jsut getting started in the saltwater hobby. Recently received a 75gal DT with a sump from a relative. Should be receiving my return pump in the mail soon and plan to water test everything with tap water (don't have RO yet). The tank also has some left over residue on the glass that water and paper towel can't seem to get off, and the sump has some left over thicker residue. What is a good way to clean this stuff off without putting my tank at risk in the future?

Joined a few months ago, never posted here. I've been researching reef tanks since I was 10, started my first one four years ago. My first tank was a 10g nano, now I'm running a 45g rimless.

Not really new here. New to posting.
Been a lurker here for close to a dozen years.
My name is Richard.
Have had a reef tank for close to 30 years.
Just swapped my last reef tank of 16 plus years to a brand spankin new E Max 260.
And boy is that thing beautiful. I must say that.
Lots of good information here.
Thanks all.
Richard.

Hello everybody I'm Christie from Los Angeles. I was an experienced FWT enthusiast many years ago when living in NC and always dreamed of the day I could afford the time and expense of managing a thriving SWT. Still deliberating on the size I will finally go with, as I reside on the 2nd floor of a 90 year old building. Leaning towards 75/80. Glad to be here :fish1::fun2:

Hey every one, I'm returning to the hobby after a good amount of time, an everting has change significantly over the years, anyhow, today my sump finally arrived, after three months of struggle with the LFS. For obvious reasons they didn't give me any schematics on the final setup. I have a protein skimmer, carbon, GFO and biopellet reactors, new 2016 apex system with all the probes, "œDOS system" for dosing, calcium and ALK, also the usual return pump, ATO, thermostat.

I´ll really appreciate any advice on how to put all this together, were to mount what, and if you suggest to use one of the chambers for a fuge, even with the biopellets because I already have some LED grow lights installed over this area to do the reverse cycle, (this may increment the life in the bio media).

I am Mihai .I have read reefcentral forums for a few years and ive decided to register finally.Meanwhile my interest got from reef aquarium to deep water pelagic aquarium but it still the same salt water .

Well I'm a newbie and got my first tanks ten years ago. Took a few years off and just recently purchased a turnkey setup from someone. Now I actually want/need to learn because I'm 90 miles from a LFS. This 40 breeder is by far the hardest tank I've felt with. Has two 16" euphotica hoods, a maxspect gyre 130, reef octopus skimmer. I'm happy to be back but I'm in over my head!

Hi, I'm Dan !
I live in the Appalachian Mountains.
I live about 90 miles from my lfs also !
I once had a 75 gallon and a 55 gallon SW tank about 30 years ago.
And decided to get back into SW about 8 months ago.
To date, I've been running a 3 gallon pico tank, then on to a 10 gallon pico reef tank. (mostly soft, and LPS coral) And now, I'm almost ready to set up a 35 gallon Hex.
I'm in the process now of trying to find a piece (or two) of used equipment I need for that. I want this tank to be for SPS corals, and a few fish.
Glad to be here.
Thank You!

Hello Reef Central Community!

I am brand new to the hobby. I started by getting a complete and very dirty setup off craigslist $20.

18g tank with drilled overflow plummed to a 30g aquaon sump/refugium. Fluval hangon filter, 35 inch Aqualife T5 lights, Coralife protein skimmer 65. Liverock, Deep sand bed. 2 Clowns, 1 Goby. Xenia, Torch corals, some types of polyps and something I cannot identify.

Currently struggling to bring down Nitrates from 50. Weekly 20% water change, Chaeto, filter, skimmer, LR, DSB.

I hope to make some friends!

hello from upstate NY. I am a super noob and a house full of empty tanks itching for some life.. still bouncing trying to figure out where to start with my 75 gallon like sump size. ect.

I have a 60gl 29gl sump been at it for about a year now

it was set up originally as a back up tank/grow out tank for my buddies 360gl

then it spiraled out of control as my wife would say!! ;)

Hello RC,

I'm Chance. I work as an accountant in Oklahoma City. I've never owned a saltwater system, but I have had freshwater tanks and have built and maintain a 600 gallon goldfish pond in my garden. I have always been fascinated by saltwater fish and corals however, so i'm really excited about getting into this hobby.

I've been lurking for over a year, researching various topics and i'm about ready to start pulling the trigger on equipment, so I thought I would finally introduce myself before I start posting my final questions and plans in other forums.
