New reefer

Hey, guys my name is Eric. Im new to the hobby. I have a 24 gallon aquapod with nothing but sand, water, and some rocks. Im pretty much learning as I go, and winging it. Any tips, or advice is greatly welcomed.

Thanks, Eric

I just set up my tank 180 gallon its less than a week old. I came home from work today and half the rock has small green hairs about a 1/8 inch long.My water seems to test 0 for nitrate, nitrite and ammonia. Is this normal just part of the cycle? I was thinking about getting 2 emarald crabs tommorrow to help? Any advice?

Hello RC, I've been following this forum for about 3 weeks on my cell phone learning before I just had to join. I've had my setup going on 2 mons now 30g fowlr 2 Koralia 1s a JEBO 835 canister filter 30lbs of LR and LS I used 6 hermit crabs from the ocean to cycle my tank. They did a very good job 0 ammonia 0 nitrites 20ppm nitrates. I have 2 damsels out of the 6 I purchased one by one now its only 2 left I learned a valuable lesson about crabs. I'm strugglin tryin to get my ph up from 7.8 and I'm cycling a 10g to throw my hermit crabs in so I can get started on the cool stuff. I'm very glad to be here.

You will find on here that the least acceptable method for cycling your tank is using live fish etc. It is better to let it cycle on its own for 3 to 4 weeks. When ammonia and nitrates are zero then you add your clean up crew, followed in a week or so by hardy corals and finally around week six start adding a fish one at a time.
Damsel are a beautiful fish but should be kept in a tank with only other damsels. They can be come a very anti social addition to a reef tank and are very smart to try and catch once you have terminated there lease.:sad2:

I am not sure if you are blaming the hermits on the demise of the damsels----they are usually peaceful to other fish as long as they can't catch them. They can be rough on snails however if they want their shells.
The damsels probably died because of the poor water conditions during cycling.

Hi all my name is Stephen and i am new to reefcentral. I have been reefing for around 6 months and it has been an amazing adventure with both highs and lows. I made the rookie mistake of not letting my first tank cycle and i lost everything because of that and a temperature swing. But i now feel like i am a little bit more informed and currently have a 34 gallon solana with a 150 sunpod and a 10 gallon zoanthis tank with a dual sattelite fixture. So i am looking forward to all of the info i will learn from this forum

unfortunately we all learn by mistakes until we discover Reef Central

Good Evening, I set up my first Reef tank 5 years ago, after keeping a 30 gallon Tropical tank for over a year. After seeing a friends 50 gallon tank I was hooked and decided to set up my own....with much needed assistance!!! After 6 months of fishes and corals dying on me for no apparant reason, I gave up and broke down the tank. 5 years on, and after reading hours of threads on this site, I decided on my current setup - a 60 gallon tank. 44" x 24" x 15". 3 months on and it's looking kinda OK. I would like to thank all users of this site for their wonderful pearls of wisdom and showcasing some fantastic tanks.

Ps
How do I post pictures...."please enter the URL "???

how long has the aquapod cycled for Eric?
I have found with my aquapods that it really helps to add a Koralia 1 power head to them

it is normal for a cycling tank. As the dead stuff comes off of the live rock(curing) it produces ammonia. The ammonia is converted to nitrites and then nitrates.
The algae in your tank is consuming them as fast as they are being produced so you get a zero test for them.
I would wait three weeks before adding any inverts--you still could get an ammonia spike or a nitrate spike. Either one will kill inverts.
As the rock cures fully the nitrates will be reduced and the algae will die off.
It is also important not to use tap water as it contains phosphates which also fuel algae growth.

Hello all, I'm new to RC. My current SW tank is a 55g with 20g sump. It is currently a mixed reef. Its been setup around 6 months. It has a red fairy wrasse, royal gramma, a few pajama cardinalfish, a blue spotted watchmen goby, and a mixed cuc. I do have a thread asking for help with MH ballast in the lighting forum. I hope to gain a lot of knowledge here.

Latests FTS under PC and T5 lighting since my MH is on the IR right now:

The tank has been cycling for about a week. I have 21 pounds of LR in it, and it seems to be a little much. Im thinking about taking about 6 pounds out. Per the recommendation of a gent at Premium Aquatics I added some bacteria to the tank. I am planning on letting the tank cycle for about the next two weeks before I put any life into it. I also have some growth on a rock that looks like an anemone, but from what I have read I think it is an apastasia. Any help or tips on how to identify that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Eric

hello all im long time browers but just regiestered recently. I have a 10 gallon bowfront with led lighting, nothing in it but water and live rock currently at a week now.
