Hello all my name is josh i am 32 years old living in harrisburg pennsylvania im new to all this.i have a 55gal oceanic bow front tank with 2 250watt halogens 20k/4 39watt t5 ho atinics/gsm protein skimmer, cora life uv sterilizer, cooler and 3 power heads with i think is about 50 pounds of live rock maybe more not positive on it.i think my tank is in the finale stage of cycling there is brown diatom algae everywhere if anyone can give me any input or tips it would be appreciated thanks

The tank has been cycling for about a week. I have 21 pounds of LR in it, and it seems to be a little much. Im thinking about taking about 6 pounds out. Per the recommendation of a gent at Premium Aquatics I added some bacteria to the tank. I am planning on letting the tank cycle for about the next two weeks before I put any life into it. I also have some growth on a rock that looks like an anemone, but from what I have read I think it is an apastasia. Any help or tips on how to identify that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Eric

put six lbs of reef rubble in the filter chamber instead of the main tank--you need the rock for filtration and it will work for you in there.

keep measuring for ammonia and nitrates, when the both spike and return to zero your tank has cycled

Hello RC....been lurking for over a year. Got a 90 gallon reef with 30 gallon refug. MH lights 2x 250. Has a deeb sand bed on it until 2 months ago. Trying sandless botttom.

Hello all,

I've been reading here for over a year and in that time have put together a pretty successful tank. I figure its time I introduce myself and share my experience. There is still a lot to learn and it seems like something new comes up everyday.

I am going to start a thread in the beginner section showing my build I don't have a lot of pictures but enough to get the idea anyway. Since the tank is a year young it should move along pretty quick.

Be careful stirring up an established deep sand bed can be catastrophic to a reef tank.

Hello RC,

Have been poking around the site for over a month and decided to introduce myself and make my first post. I currently have 3 tanks. Tank #1 is a QT tank with nothing special that I use to introduce all of my new fish. Tank #2 is a 55 gal softie reef that I have had setup for over 2 years. It is my pride and joy and has led me to my latest purchase of Tank #3 which is a 75 gal drilled tank with 20 gal sump.

I purchased the 75 on Halloween as a complete setup from a fellow reefer (on my 55 made the mistake of buying everything new and paying an arm and a leg). I am very happy with it and I am already in the process of upgrading some of the components (Lights, skimmer, UV sterilizer, etc). I do have a question for the experts.

The sump I purchased with the tank is kind of a odd design in that it is a three chambered sump in which the previous owner had setup as a wet/dry system with bio balls in chamber 1, miracle mud, cheato, and AquaC Urchin in chamber 2 and Quiet One return in chamer 3. Reading on RC I have heard that Bio balls are a "nitrate factory" and that miracle mud is also a no no since I am wanting to do LPS and some SPS. My question is can I run the skimmer and keep the cheato both in chamber #2. The first chamber is not large enough to house the skimmer but I do like having the cheato as well just wondering what would be the best configuration....

Anyway that's my story....Thanks to RC as I have learned more on this site in one month than I did on my own in nearly 3 years!

Hi all! I am new to reefcentral and still not sure how it all works but I am glad LiveAquaria @ Facebook sent me here!
I have a 55g reef and it just recently crashed!! UGH! Starting all over again! Hopefully this time I'll have somewhere to turn if anything goes wrong! My local LFS doesn't even know what happened to make my tank crash! So frustating!
Anyways..I am real excited to meet new aquarists and share/get info!

Great for the fishes but IMO a little soon for anemones. You'll have to monitor the calcium and alk and magnesium level for them very carefully

they seem to be doing great so far, i got them because they where already being hosted

I Made A Thread

nice thread

If you are doing weekly water changes then you are probably alright but sooner or later you are going to have to start measuring the calcium, magnesium and alkalinity of your water. Possibly starting a two part dosing method.
