If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi i am Bogdan, "migrating" here from the clowns of livingreef. Gez they suck!
If you don't do as they say, you are considered rebel and undesired.
I have a 90 gallons saltwater and i usually like to invent practical stuff. I don't like paying the local fish stores suppliers as they are ripping us off. Everything can be easily built from low cost materials and relatively less time work.
I currently built a protein skimmer and a small canister filter with interchangeable media (including 1 micron mechanical algae remover) at 4 times lesser cost than dedicated ones existent on the market. Currently redesigning a new concept of sump.
[welcome]Bogdan,
Sorry to hear about your bad experience, we're glad to have you.
Sounds like you're going to fit right in over in the DIY forum.

Howzit,

Writing from San Diego. Working with an 80G tall, 20G sump. I've only been at this for ~1.5 years, so no reef yet. Had to start over about 4-5 months ago and just started adding fish 2 weeks ago. My additions so far; cleaning crew, pair of clowns, goldhead sleeper goby, and 3 firefish.

Great site. Thanks to everyone.

[welcome] sounds like your off to a good start, Cali is a great place to be for this hobby.

Just saying hello from Ga. I have been in salt water for a while have a 75 gal reef running right now and a 180 in the works that i will be setting up after new yr sometime.

If you're going to set up your 180 you might as well document and share your journey. Just make sure you take many pictures!!!

First salt water tank is up and running...

Hello, my name is Adam

I'm in Calgary, Canada and have had fresh water tanks my whole life. Most recently I've taken down a 180 gallon planted tank (moved to a house that couldn't take the weight) and set up my first discus tank.

Here's the set up:
90 gallon display tank
25 gallon refugium
750 watt metal halide system (2x250 watt halides, 250 watts actinic)
fluval Fx5 (canister I know, but I needed to try and use some of what I already had!)
2x Vortech MP10 pumps set to the reef crest mode
1 pump of indeterminate brand powering the return from the refugium that I calculated to about 650gph
The fx5 and the refugium are one separate water pipe systems with input and outputs being on opposite sides of the tank. With the vortechs on random, a great deal of water moves about this tank

I cycled for a week with 10 cocktail shrimp (what a smell!) then when NH4 and NO2 were zero I added 85 pounds of live rock that was pre-cured. After 4 more days there was no spike in ammonia so I added a neon dottyback and a purple and sailfin tang. The tangs are young and I know they will outgrow the tank, but luckily we are building a house right now that will have a 200 gallon tank built in to the wall - I just didn't want my first reef tank to be a monster like that! I was concerned about aggression between the tangs, but they had both been in their tank together at the LFS for 2 months with no problems (I went and checked them out almost daily) and I added them together. So far, other than a bit of chasing, they are getting along.

I've been a bit neurotic on water testing and since I started there has been no spike in any of the toxic stuff, with a pH of 8.2, alkalinity of 11.7-11.8, specific gravity of 1.025, temp that fluctuates between 24.5-25.5 over a 24 hour period and calcium around 550ppm (Calgary tap water is glacial run off with an outrageously high calcium level naturally).

a couple of days ago I added what appears to be a mated pair of cinnamon clown fish, and then proceeded to make what I think was my first mistake. yesterday I got impulsive and bought them a bubbletip anemone. It found a spot it liked, settled in and everything seemed fine until today when I turned down the water flow for feeding. It decided it didn't like it's spot anymore, let go of the rock and before I could catch it, it tumbled over itself on to a rock that has a nasty colony of aptasia that I haven't been able to remove. it was on them for all of 4 seconds but when I flipped it over, half of it's tentacles looked like they had been singed off with a lighter. I was looking right at it before it fell so I know it was nearly instant. I'm hoping it lives, but it won't re-attach to the rocks so I have it in a gentle corner with rocks it can climb on to if it chooses. If it dies, this will probably be my only foray into anemones for a good long while as I will feel awful about killing it. Hopefully those tentacles can grow back, the body and foot of the anemone itself appear undamaged.

Anyway, that's where I'm at. Hoping to learn lots from this place as I take my hobby to the next level

Please excuse my newness

Hello ladys and gents. Im Bonfils Im not new but coming out of retirement. I had plenty of freshwater tanks when I was kid nothing realy special. Guppys Jackdempses and wild fish caught in my backyard pond. I live in AZ and my wife is the real fish buff I just like to tinker and eletricut myself and I need some help. Basicly I need a DIY nano cube mad scientist.

My tanks just a 20 gal tall realy basic freshwater

My wifes tank is a 24gal Nano cube and needs alot of help.

I can fix most anything and have but need some guidance oh and I dont spell so good so sorry in advance and please bear with me.

Ive worked as a handyman mechanic and welder. I can rebuild fix just about anything from PC-TV-Xbox-DVD

Other hobbys are home made wine and recycling the normal into bizzare.

Howdy, my name is Izzy. I am kinda new to SW tanks, but not to fresh water. I currently have a sixty five gallon SW tank. Im very excited and cant wait till everything is ready for fish and corals. I am currently searching for a refugium to replace my wet dry filter and have many questions. I have many questions also in general, and all the stores so far around me dont like dealing with beginners or my questions. I would also like to find out how I can ask a question, to were everyone can comment or give me there advice. Glad to be apart of the RC.:dance::bounce3::bounce3:

New to the Forum

Hello, my name is Frank, and I am new to the forum.

Although I'm setting up a freshwater tank, the set-up is similar to a reef tank.

I have three 2" drains and one 1" return at the surface, but there is no overflow.

With the addition of one canister filter to maintain pH I could run this as a marine tank.

The system will filter down to one micron with nitrates at zero and includes a UV with an 18 gpm rating. The turnover rate is 10 with a 1,000 gph flow rate.

hi-frank :) usually our marine set ups are nothing like freshwater frank, we use different equipment for sure, you said your setting up a freshwater tank? if so good luck, however we deal with salt here, anyhow fella welcome to the forum

Evening,

My name is Greg and I've had a salt tank in the past but it was fish only then. Now I'm trying my hand at a mini-reef and I can see that I have a LONGGGGGGGGGGG way to go to get started on a level like you guys.

I currently have 2 tanks going now (55 gallon in the dining room with live rock and some fish......corals coming slowly and a 10 gallon with live rock in my home office)

I'm looking around and hoping some of the greatness from the forum starts to rub off on me.

New here just saying Hi.
Never has a salt water tank before and just setup a small BioCube on my desk. Its close to being done cycling if it isnt already.

Just reading up on all the poo-poo I should know.

Hello everyone

Hello everyone

Im making the big jump from marine fish only to reef. I admit when i jump in i really jump in. I must have picked the hardest tank to setup. Im trying to set up a 36 gallon hex tank. So far i have jbj k2 150 watt Hqi. and a spare fluval 305 filter. I was thinking of buying the following to finish the setup for a nice reef tank
Reef Octopus BH1000
Koralia 2
GFO
Rox 08 carbon
what do you guys think

sounds good, i would consider 2 k2s rather than 1 though, or a couple of tunze nano streams, either way welcome to the forum
