If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hi all, I'm just trying to get into this hobby. I've got a 20 gallon tank but I'm thinking it will be too small for a FOWLR. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks

depends on your intended stock, a pair of clowns and a royal gramma as well as a yellow wrasse would be fine, any more could be a bit of a squeeze, even those 4 are tight tbh, but if you are sensible 3-4 small fish will be ok if a fish only

My name is John and I live on Long Island.

I have been in the hobby over 10-12 years, have a few tanks.

This is secret forum, the Lfs don't tell you about.

Hello all,

My name is Scott and I've been keeping a 125G freshwater Cichlid tank for a few years now. My sister has a 180 salt and I've had the itch to try it for some time. Depending on if my wife lets me convert the freshwater, I will either do the 125G or buy a 37G column tank. I built a LED lighting system for my freshwater tank, and will do the same for my first salt tank to keep electricity and heat to a minimum. I will obviously have a pair of clowns "for the kids" and I'm hoping to find a Green Bubble tip for them to host in. "No good LFS close" I would also like a few LPS and SPS to compliment things. I'm hoping to start gathering all my parts soon so I can get the cycle started.

Scott

Wish you were closer I just had my GBTA split and will be looking for a new home for it. If I may offer some advice, go slow, SPS are tough coral to keep so make sure you have a very stable/mature tank before trying your hand at corals.

Hey Paul B that would be a fish tank. We have howitzers, Bradleys, MLRS. No M1's here but I got to drive one at a maintinence school I went to at Ft. Knox

Re: What size fish tank

Re: What size fish tank

Thanks for the response Michael. I think I'm going to wait until I get a bigger tank. I currently have a 20gal. freshwater set up that I dont want to get rid of. It's taking up about the only spot that I could put though. If I could get a much larger one (55+) I could clear room for that. Also, I'm looking in to getting a hexagonal tank (I've got a corner that could use one). Anybody have any experience with saltwater hexagonal tanks?

Thanks! :fish1: :fish2:

One more thing, I would like to ultimatly get bi-color dottybacks but I'm not sure how well they do. Anybody with any advice on these would be appreciated! I'll keep reading for now.

Josh I was stationed at Ft Knox for about 4 months for AIT, and I have an intimate relationship with Howitzers in another part of the world.
In Colorado I used to drive an M60 tank around chasing buffalos, rthey are not too fast, but don't worry i didn't hit any of them.

hi my name is John. I am pretty new to the hobby less than 2 years started with a 47gallon and have since upgraded to a 72 bowfront.

I have the bug and have been looking to upgrade to a 180 or bigger in wall. I am taking my time to learn before i make the big leap. Or if the right deal comes along. :)

Hey RC my name is Ashley A., male not female. I'm fairly new to the hobby. Started a 25 gal. tall reef tank bout 2 yrs. ago. Just upgraded to a 40 gal. tall no sump, fission skimmer and a 350 magnum canister filter. 20 lbs. of LR 2in. DSB 5 astrae snails, 5 blue-legged hermits, 1 red-striped sailfin golby all taken from 25 gal. with 2 new additions - 2 blue chromis. No corals at this time. Seeded 40 gal. with a cup of LS from 25 gal. Using CaribSea Sea-Pure water. Tank up and runnin for a month now. Battled cloudy water for 3 weeks and found out it was algae growing in water led me to discover that extra light was hitting my tank from a window door facing side of tank. Turned lights off for 2 days covered window and now water is crystal clear. Parameters never got out of hand. Nitrates-0, Phosphates-0, salinity-1.023-24, hardness-13, Ph.-8.2, calcium-420.

I have the 72 bow as well. people either love them or hate them. I really like it.

Plenty of research is the best route to take, it saves $ in the long run too. It's hard to pass up great deals. :D

It sounds like you got a handle on your set up. If you're like most of us you're going to want to take the dive into corals.....

Hello - New to the hobby

Hello - New to the hobby

My name is Jason and i live in the rockwall area. I have recently purchased a 150G tank and have begu nthe process of getting it ready. after a sanding, staining and cleaning i have moved it into my study and ordered rock and sand from Marcorocks. I have a 30g sump with a ref center and trigger skimmer, ehiem 1060 return pump, 2 # 4 powerheads and a UV sterilizer 40watt. i have 2-250watt MH with two 110Watt T-12 VHO's (actinic white). I installed a RO/DI system in the garge with a 32gallon brute force trash can with a powerhead , and heater in it with a ATO on the sump. i am waiting on 2-300 watt Retna heaters to install in the overflow chambers
( for cosmetic reasons) and one more 20 pds rock from Marco and i will be ready to start mixing water. I got Red Sea reef salt also. I am still not sure about testing and how to do all the chemicals or treatments but i have read a lot here that helps. anything im missing?

You are off to a great start. I would change the bulbs in the T12 VHO's to Super Actinics. (no reason to have the 50/50's with your MH) as for reef chemistry you can start here it has a lot of good info for starting up a tank.
