Hi Everyone! Im Jen and live in so cal. Have a 55gal doing its first cycle as I type :bounce2: YAY! I have done fresh for years but got bored and decided a Reef was just what I needed.

My Cousins have ventured into salt before and are giving me a helping hand.

So- My set up is a 55 gal with custom hood, lights are "day lights" and the "reef lights". By that I believe they mean the halide. I have a pro clear pro wet/dry for 75 gal with a built in protien skimmer. (300 gal/hr).

Just added live sand (Caribsea Arag-alive) and took some sand from an existing 30 gal I saved. (waiting for 55 to finish cycling so i can relocate fish)

2 questions: Can I seed my tank with Copepods while its cycling? And, Does anyone in so cal know where I can go to get live Pods? I hate paying shipping and never knowing what Ill get buying online.

Thanks in advance for suggestions!

Hi and welcome to RC Jen...

I would add them after the cycle to minimize die-off and if you are anywhere near Canoga Park, there is a LFS called Vivid Aquariums. They sell bottled pods there for $20...

Hi all!

I'm Eric from New Jersey and currently have a 25g fresh water stocked with Parrots & a pair of Cichilds.

I've had f/w tanks for 10+yrs and have decided to try my first salt water tank that is currently cycling! :fun2: It's a 35 gallon (36x13x16) w/ a Satellite dual lamp light set up & a BakPak2 protein skimmer running. I plan on starting very basic, I'd like to get some clowns and other durable fish before I make my way into corals.

Already, I am having a HUGE problem with micro bubbles from the new bakpak2 which has been running for 6 days now and I need HELP! :worried:

My salinity is 1.023 and the tank is empty, so I'm assuming my nitrate levels, etc are good (or is that foolish?). Any tips/suggestions to help reduce the micro bubbles would be extremely appreciated as I'm getting frustrated already!

Thanks & hope to talk with you in the future!

welcome to RC Pimps,

I have no experience with BakPaks but generally allow 2-3 weeks for complete break-in of the skimmer and the microbubbles should decrease.

Hello and thank you!

Am I correct in assuming that these bubbles are normal for every tank at start up? I'm just asking b/c I'm not sure if I have a faulty unit.

Thanks for your time.

well at least for most skimmers, yes.

I think BakPaks have a bubble defuser plate you can add-on.

Hello, from Lithuania

Hello, from Lithuania

hello everyone,

I am from Lithuania, quite new in this hobby, only about one year. But because of my experimental spirit, decided to run skimmerless setup without sump, refugium, using simple biofilter with chemistry as denitrator/carbon/antiphos. After 7 months the results can be seen in pictures. Anyway, due to very expensive chemistry decided to buy skimmer, also coral grow was really slow. I decided to join you, dear colleagues, in this forum, because I know I will find a lot of info, and will improve my knowledge. Thank you !

Heya

Heya

Hows it hangin. I've had a reef tank now for the past 5 1/2 or 6 years. Started with a ten nano and like a junkie moved up to a 30 then to a 50 tall(didnt like the flow) then to a 37 tall, and now finally a 55. Ive got 2 rena cartridge filters and a hanging protein skimmer on the back, with a viper mhd 150w on one side of the tank for my higher light corals and a coralife double cp on the other side. Mainly decided to join the community because after reading through alot of posts you guys seem to know more about it than me and I am always up for some learning and research. Knowledge is power!

Hey,

Thanks for having me.

The name is Doug, I'm 30 years old. I have had several freshwater tanks. I got out of the freshwater tanks about 3 years ago when my son was born. I had no time. So now he is 3. He seen his uncles tank and couldn't be pulled away from it..(approx 2yo 100gal reef with several assorted fish). So I cleaned out my starter 30gal.. I need to get a reef going for us to enjoy.

So I just wanted to say hi. I'll be around for a long time. (awesome site btw.) Any and ALL of my questions, and there will be many will be around somwhere on the forums.

Thank you for reading my long winded intro...

Oh, Nano power heads for a 30 gal? ow many? Am I going to need a metal halide for 30 gal? ( more concentratd on a reef than a fish tank...) Thanks.

You will need to monitor calcium, magnesium and alkalinity levels if you have added all that coral

New to Reef Central and Saltwater

I am new to reef Cenral and would like to say hi. I sarted the saltwater tank April of 09 because I was offered to take a complete set up for free. Could not pass it up. I always wanted to have another fish tank since I been young.

55gl coallife 4 bulb 65watt each protien skimmer sump list goes on.

Have many hermit crabs, snails
have a sea hare
and few fish.
just put in a mated pair clowns
1 small clown
2 damsels
1 cleaner shirmp
and one pepperment shrimp

have a mushroom rock with over 12 heads
othe single mushrooms
torch coral
xenia that i think its not going to make it
2 #3 koralia pumps
1 #1 Koralia all for watermovement

i would say about 80lbs live rock

I choose not to use sand on the bottom as some suggested not to so bottom of tank is glass

Not sure what else I can say but I love this hobby cant wait to get a bigger tank
