:bounce1:Hey RC my name is William from the bay area here in california and i am 20 with 1 year in the hobby. i just started using RC today! I currently run a 9G nano with 18lbs of live rock, 1 cleaner shrimp, a couple clusters of zoas, 2 types of palys, 2 mushrooms, pom pom xenia, goniopora,5 heads candy cane, 3 heads lobo, frag of orange monti cap and 2 kenya trees. I am running this all under 18 watt pc and it has been doing well (a lot of people tell me that all my corals will die under these lights eventually). Its nice to finally be a part of something where I can actually talk to people who know what they are doing... thx talk to you guys soon!!!

Hello all,

I've been lurking around this forum and a few others the last couple of weeks, trying to decide when/how I will take the plunge so to speak. I had researched marine aquaria about 20 years ago, but for various reasons never got started. Recently I had been thinking about getting a small FW tank for my daughter to enjoy and then....researching those options I of course started seeing all the new marine options and technology. Oh bother.

Now of course my interest has been reignited after reading about LR and Gobies and Coral, etc. I had hit on trying a Nano cube FOWLR system, but frankly now I'm a bit overwhelmed with all the talk of modifications with dremels and ballasts not firing. Yeesh. Feeling a little intimidated. Based on everything I've read about HQI lighting, they seem to have a lot of issues so I'm thinking I should just make the leap right to LED now. But it is so much more money than I was originally thinking. I think I need to take a deep breath and a big step back.

My girl and I just started a 29 g have a koralia 1 & 2 viper 150w 14k clamp on light. 2 470nM blue leds. golden Coral banded shrimp , peperment shrimp, pigmy angel, fiji blue damsel. Here are some pics any help will be welcomed :crazy1: :crazy1:

Hi everyone,
I have caught a new bug this winter, and it seems it's not gonna go away in seven days. Since I'll be haunting these threads for awhile, I thought it might be a good idea to say hi to everyone and present myself.

I am absolutely new to this hobby, I've been reading for almost a month now on the subject and 2 weeks ago I got lucky and discovered this website.
I am still not able to fit all the requirements that I'm aware of and the constraints I have to live with in one solution, but have been working on it and I am as excited as the first day I've contemplated the idea of starting a reef.

I would like to thank you in advance for your patience and help, I'll be posting really dummy questions for awhile, at least until I get my bearings.

How I got here? For awhile now I've been working in this place where they have reef aquariums on every floor (no, it is not Seaworld ), and every time I take a break and move around to freshen up, I end up searching curiously to see if I can spot a new bugger in the closest tank from my desk. They must have a very good supplier, since most of the time I am not disappointed.

I have fun reading on the subject, while trying to figure out how I could start this. The expectations are high of course, and willing to spend energy, time and money to make this happen, but there's a budget nevertheless.

Oh well, what is the worse that can happen? Probably I will discover that it will cost me per year the same "effort" as a short trip from east coast to the great barrier reef, and I'll end up doing the latter (if I know my wife any better). I'll be having fun either way, nevertheless :bounce1:

exciting times ahead im sure, id suggest a background for sure, i like blue, but black is great too

its a great hobby, i really enjoy it, importantly try to consider water changes and maintenance as fun and not a chore and you will enjoy the hobby as well, read the stickies at the top of the forum and hope to see you around the forum posting

Hello Everyone,

I am a "green horn" Reefer and this will be my first post on Reef Central. I hope that there is as many helpful folks here as there are on the other forums I'm a member of.

I've been keeping a mixed reef aquarium for about a year now. I just recently moved and upgraded my 60gallon to a 120 Long. Unfortunately, during the move I lost my Kole (Yellow Eye) Tang

Everyone else survived the transport and is very happy in their new home. The shrimp look like they are lost and my coral banded molted in the center of the tank during the middle of the day! That was cool. I went to grab the camera when I figured out what he was doing and by the time I stood up he was done... Maybe I'll be able to catch him next time.

The only problem I'm having right now is getting lights on my new tank. I transferred my ICECAP 660 and VHO bulbs, plugged it in and there was fire and smoke in the living room. After a week of debate, I'm purchasing a new 660 ballast and keeping the VHO'S vice going to a different light source. I'll end up having 440W of VHO lighting and 208W from T5 HO'S that will soon have reflectors on them

This tank has an internal with a Mag 9.5 return over the back and a RIO 26HF return through the overflow. I have a RIO 20HF hooked to a spray bar to keep water flowing up and behind my 150+ pounds of live rock. I have employed an 8" DSB in the fuge section of my 55 gallon sump/fuge of crushed aragonite. I am undecided if I'm going to run a skimmer on my system yet or not.

I look forward to meeting everyone via message boards and would like to even meet some people in real life in the northern puget sound area

I would highly recommend that you add a skimmer to your setup.
Check out the area reef clubs on the reef clubs forum to see if there is one in your locality

im brian from south jersey. i had a 55 in the early 90's salt and loved it but partied too much. ive been keeping 2 30g fresh with cichlids for 3 yrs. now and just bought a 90g rr with overflow and im building a 30 long fuge.just got reef aquaruim by delbeek and sprung and whooa, my ocd is in overdrive. lookout friends im here to bug ya. didnt mean to bug ya

I joined RC about 2 months ago, and I guess it's time for me to stop lurking! I've had a 55 gal reef for about 7 years now. It's my first tank since joining the hobby, so it's got all the newb stuff (hang on fuge, in-tank skimmer, powerheads, etc). I'm hoping to upgrade (~250 gal) within the next year or so, and I can't wait to get all that stuff out of sight(where it belongs). Right now I have some fun livestock to care for and I just started with corals. The softies and mushrooms seem to be doing well so hopefully I can branch out after the build.

Dallas here, i am from Johannesburg South Africa, i have been reefing on and off since 1992, and now back into it full swing.

Things here are expensive so i have done alot of DIY and build 2 out of my 3 tanks i am going to run.

one is a 100L nano, with 2 sumps on a vertical stand, one has a LR chamber and 15L RO water storage, then it flows to a dsb and return. tank 400mmx450mmx400mm with sumps of the same size.

the other is JbJ 12g nano

and my biggest is a combo of a 1200x450x450 and a 890lx890lx1200wx500h corner tank

i hope to learn even more here and win an international TOTM

is there a forum for members setups etc, maybe i have overlooked it somewhere

I finally got around to doing this. I joined the hobby about 3 years ago with an Oceanic Biocube 29. It's got a Sunpod 150, Tunze 9002 in the back middle chamber with no bio-balls. Using a jbj ato system, with helps a bunch. Water evaporates so quickly with halides and no top! Gonna put the original hood back on be because I'm gonna move my sps and stuff into my new 60 gallon rimless. It's got a 20 gallon sump, with a Vertex in-100, an eheim 1250 return, and 2 200 watt heaters. 4 inches of crushed coral, and 50 lbs of live rock. Waiting on my Tek Elite. Thank you Reef Central! You are an amazing bunch of people!
