If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello everyone, i am new to this forum.. i have had my 29 gallon bio cube for alittle over 2 years. its been a fish only tank and i would like to start adding coral and other things to it but i have never added any supplements to the tank since i set it up. anyone have any suggestions to what i should use? thanks :)

hi,
I started this hobby back in may 2009. I jumped into reef tanks without even knowing what to do. I found this deal on craigslist for a 125 gallon island tank (with livestock) for $500 (even includes GHA lol). I was shocked by the price and quickly called the owner. Due to jumping in without knowledge, we lost a lot of fishes and a few corals, but we learn along the way and now, everything's doing great.

I would suggest you monitor the calcium, magesium and alkalinity for a while as you add the coral. Depending on the type of coral you are adding and how quickly then the demand might be accomplished by weekly water changes with a quality salt mix.
At the point it does not then you might want to start with a two part dosing regime such as B- ionics two part

Hi

Hi

I have a 65 Gal Tall Reef/Fish tank. I've had a SW tank for about 5 years. I just got serious about it, over the last 7 to 8 months. I have a 15 gal fish tank sump, but want to change to an acrylic sump w/refugium. Whenever I get the room, I will move up to a 100 gal tank. I can't wait for that day.

I really like a lot of pictures & ideas that I've seen on here.

Here is a picture of my tank.

I do have some regrets about buying my tank. I was being a little cheap and figured I could remove the algae easily. I could of gotten a full tank about the samesize for about 1000+ at that time, but I got this one. Ended up spending a few thousand upgrading everything.

Hello Everybody,

Last summer, I found a scratched up fifty gallon acrylic and cf light at the local salvation army for $30 and couldn't stop myself. My wife knew better but let me buy it anyway. I kept SW fish back in the '70's and I guess I never really shook the addiction - but now there are corals not just fish - things are much worse.

Long story short - I ditched the 50 just after Christmas and upgraded to a 115 gallon glass - surprise, my wife didn't leave me - and now my kids joining in and feeding this obsession.

115 gallon.
Remora Pro HOB skimmer.
Odyssea 4i Canister filter.
2 - 175 gph power heads feeding a home built reverse flow under gravel plenum.
Mangum 250 HOB - mircon filter 24/7.
Kent 150 phosban reactor.
4x54w T5 - 2 actinic, 1x10K 1x18k
Odyssea 36w UV.

what's the total wattage of your bulbs. Lps and soft corals can do very well in the range of 3-5 watts per gallon.

I am curious on the few thousand you had to spend upgrading everything---what did that consist of??

BTW
We all upgrade our original equipment and the tank is the least costly of upgrades:)

IMO a refugium is the way to go for long term reduction and phosphates in your system.

BTW
I removed the extra img tags on your picture---it would appear like you are using the link code rather the the "img" code from your picture site??

Hello. I've decided to get a fish tank. I've never had one before, and we're thinking of getting a 10 gallon. I've heard that it's easier to start with a larger tank, and was wondering if you could give some opinions on that? If a ten gallon is a good idea, what sorts of fish should we start with? Sorry my questions are so nooby, I just have no experience in this.

Thanks for the kind words capn...wish I could help but this hobby has really changed since my earlier dabblings...I've learned so much from this site in the short time I've been poking around here.

Thanks again for the welcome!
