If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

Hello all, I am very new to all this including the hobby. I have had my tank set-up since nov 09. My name is kyle, I am 20 years old, I work two jobs. UPS as a package handler and Mr.Gattis pizza as a manager. One of my close friends have been in the hobby for about 25 years and he has current got me very interested.

I have a 120 gallon FOWLR. I would like like to know if all my equipment is sufficent enough to keep everything healty and alive. I am current running a 30 gallon sump/fuge i custom built my self. My coralife SS 125 quit working so I am going to build a 90 Gallon sump/fuge with a tank I am recieving for free..

My new set-up will consist of the following:
Lighting- 4x65 watt PC, 2 10k daylights and 2 actinic bulbs.
Skimmer- Just purchased a reef octopus nwb 150. Read alot opf good things about it :)
Water flow- 1200GPH mag 12 return pump and 2x Hydor koralia 3's...
I only have about 60-70 pounds of live rock.
Live stock- Blue hippo tang, bi-color dotty back, orange spotted goby, and a niger trigger i want to rid of. I also have a choc chip star fish.. few hermits.. few snails..

In my sump/fuge I will have bio-balls, 40 pounds of LS, LR rubble, lots of that stringy hair algea, my octo nwb 150 and my return pump.

Please let me know if this will be a good enough set-up to run. I am very new so any advice anyone has would be greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!!

Thought I better introduce myself....

Hello, Just wanted to say I love the forum. I have been endlessly reading and learning over the past few weeks, so I thought I would start posting. I just set up my 55g SW tank. I am going to do FOWLR.

Hey RC new to the site but not entirley new to reefing or the reefing forums

I currently have a 46 bowfront reef. I run a very simple setup but have not skimped out n any of equipment.

Specs. 4x39 T5HO Tek, vortech mp20 powerhead, and octopus bh 800s. I dont have a sump because when i bought my tank i new nothing about them but i quickly learned right after and it was too late. My tank has been up and running for 7 months now, this is my first reef. I've been going really slow when it comes to stocking corals, my fish stocking list is almost finnished.

I only have a small handfull of corals right now, they include a couple of zoa frags, bubble coral, brain, birdsnest, and candy cane.
My livestock currently consists of a melanurus wrasse, McCoskers flasher wrasse, pair of black and white clowns and a single chromis

i also run a 20 gallon FOWLR that houses my green spotted puffer, blue damsel and purple psedochromis so far everyone is getting along ok

Can't wait to explore the site some more, pics will be up shortly.

Also since im new to this forum where are we able to place our tank's pics, is their like a tank build section that could be like our main thread for our tanks?

I'll be the first one to call me a newbie. I have had several freshwater tanks throughout my life and feel that I am ready to step up to the plate and set up a marine tank. I've been trying to do my homework and haven't bought a single component yet. I am determined to take my time and make this work the first time. I have read several online forums, websites, and magazines and have the "general idea" about the type of components that I need, but I would like to have suggestions on which brands to purchase. I'll start by letting you know that I have been looking for craigslist patrons advertising their used tanks and components for dirt cheap and have found a 70 gal that needs a little cleaning and a 55 gal that looks good as is. I have read that a wet/dry filter is preferrable for novice to skilled aquarists alike, but also know that they are a "little" pricy. So, basically I will accept any and all information and tips that you have to offer. Thank you very much. I would also like to know what types of fish go well together. I am thinking about getting a maroon clowfish with bubbletip anemone, a few pajama cardinalfish, some snails and dwarf hermit crabs, and maybe some others. I have yet to do the research on each individual species and their requirements, but those are the ones that I like.

Hello All,

My name is Sean and I am 24 years old and a recent graduate of the University of Central Florida. I decided to rebuild my 90g tank due to a complete algae takeover caused by neglect and am subsequently documenting it on here. The thread can be found here http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1796879

I am looking forward to being a valued member of the online reefing community.

Thank you,

-Sean

wow great shots.

As a suggestion start your own build thread in the new to the reef section or the reef discussion thread and post your pictures there

Hello,

I'm Tiffany my husband is Ryan we will both be using this account! We are 22 & recently married! We are just now setting up our new tank! Very excited/nervous! We are hoping we can learn alot from you more experienced hobbyist!!!

Thanks,
Tiff & Ryan

Hey everyone! Names Joe. I'm completely new to saltwater tanks, but have always wanted one and after seeing my friends tank setup and how much my kids loved it thought I'd give it a go. I've been reading as much as I can for the last month and I've learned a lot. Picked up my first tank last Saturday. A 65 gallon and got a sump to go with it. Currently building the stand and figuring out all the plumbing and where to get it all from.

Hope to get to know many of you better as I'm sure I'll be posting a lot of questions as I go.

Suggest you start your own build thread Joe. That way you can post pics and ask questions that won't be lost in such a long thread as this

You are best to start with lots of quality live rock which is the main biological filtration system for the life of your tank--at least 1 lbs per gal.
Next invest in a really good protein skimmer right from the start.
This is all you need for filtration so IMO stay away from the wet/dry filters--you don't need them and they can cause nitrate problems in the future.

This is the best thread for advise on which fish to purchase

You must get by and regular water changes and lots of live rock---there are plenty of great tanks that prefer this rather then sumps and skimmers etc

If you could post a pic we might be able to identify the mystery creature

A preferred lighting for lps corals in softies is 3-5 watts per gal
For flow 20-40 times the tank vol in gph. For a fowlr tank 10 times which you appear to have right now
For rock 1 to 1.5 lbs per gal

Remove the bioballs before they become nitrate problems--the reef rubble is good enough and if you don't want to add more rock to your display tank then you can add it to your sump.

Hello. I've decided to get a fish tank. I've never had one before, and we're thinking of getting a 10 gallon. I've heard that it's easier to start with a larger tank, and was wondering if you could give some opinions on that? If a ten gallon is a good idea, what sorts of fish should we start with? Sorry my questions are so nooby, I just have no experience in this.

A larger tank is more forgiving of new reefing mistakes. A ten gallon tank requires a water change once a week and you are very limited to one or two fish.
If you want to go small then I would suggest you buy a 24gal or 29gal aquapod where the filtration and lighting is all under the hood.
Check them out on my website

Here is an excellent thread on advice for purchasing fish

Hi All!!!
Dallas here, i am from Johannesburg South Africa, i have been reefing on and off since 1992, and now back into it full swing.

Things here are expensive so i have done alot of DIY and build 2 out of my 3 tanks i am going to run.

one is a 100L nano, with 2 sumps on a vertical stand, one has a LR chamber and 15L RO water storage, then it flows to a dsb and return. tank 400mmx450mmx400mm with sumps of the same size.

the other is JbJ 12g nano

and my biggest is a combo of a 1200x450x450 and a 890lx890lx1200wx500h corner tank

i hope to learn even more here and win an internation TOTM :)

We are 22 & recently married! We are just now setting up our new tank! Very excited/nervous!

I think being recently married and 22 should make you more nervous than your fish tank :fish2::inlove:
