If You Are New to Reef Central, Introduce Yourself Here!

after being out of the hobby for the past 5 years, i'm coming back with a 125 gal marine (fish-only) tank. what i would like to know is what areas has the technology changed the most. i see the new LED lighting is one, but for a fish-only tank, that is not of much interest to me?

has protien skimming gotten significantly better? anything else?

I'm not sure much has changed in the skimmer arena except maybe skimmers that self clean, easier to adjust and maybe the recirculating skimmers. Can't really think too much that has changed for FOWLR tanks, seems like everyone is really concerned with reef tanks.

A 125 is a perfect size tank, good luck.

Hi my name is Robert and I am a reefaholic. My local forum is pretty dead so I decided to try the deep water.

I am currently working on my newest tank, a 210g. I figure it will tank a while to get up and running; but that is ok with me (haha, not really).

You are among friends that share the same addiction ;). What I would give for a 210. Be sure to start a new thread documenting your progress.

Starting a new thread is fairly simple:

At the top of the page under the reef central logo, there is a button that says:

"New Thread"

Click that and you're on your way, Make sure you add a Title and write what you want in the message box.

Good Luck

Hey All,

My name's Michael and I'm a student at Texas A&M. I just recently got into saltwater tanks and bought a 75g oceanic reef tank, with a 20g long tank for a sump/fuge. I Just got all the plumbing for an overflow with a durso 1'' standpipe and a 3/4'' return. The sump is a basic set-up but I'm clueless as of now on what goes in it...hahaha, I hope to get it all up and running soon, and can't wait to get fish it her!!!

Thanks guys!

Hello, I´m Albert I joined RC few months ago and I really appreciate all the information I get from here. this is my second attempt on having a mini reef, last one was more than 15 years ago. These days I think is easier due all the trials and errors that all of you have had.

Cheers

As for what to put in your sump you can add some light down there and use macro algae to remove excess nutrients, naturally it will house little copepods and other little critters that will be beneficial to the tank.

Good luck with your set up.

Be sure to take a look in the Nano Forum for great information and ways to make a smaller tank easier to manage.

Hello

Hello

Hi all. My names Andy and I'm starting on my first saltwater tank. I've done a couple of tanks in the past and had a great going Cichlid tank a couple of years ago before I moved and got rid of it. I've been dying to do a saltwater since I was a kid and finally decided to do it. I've done lots of homework so far and decided it was time to sign up for a community. I'll be putting the tank together over the next few months.

Hey all. Name's Chris. I just started in the aquarium world a couple months ago all thanks to my girlfriend. We started off with one 20 gal and then got another 20 gal. One is mostly fish and the other is mostly corals. Luckily my dad, who's been doing the SW for years and has a well established 90 gal directed me to this community and I've been reading for awhile now and finally decided to introduce myself. Have to say I love the place and have learned a lot of interesting tidbits! Been reading around on the various areas I've been needing to read!

I'm a certified newbie but am ready to start!

I'm a certified newbie but am ready to start!

Hello, my name is Bob Piker. I'm a watch collector and Accutron watch repair person and have a very logical approach to just about everything. Quite a computer background, too, before becoming a watch repairer. I had many freshwater aquariums in my pre-teen years (I'm 45 now) but it has been many years and decided to jump back full-force with my first ever saltwater aquarium. I have a 48" aquarium all set up now with about 20 lbs of live rock and 60 lbs of live sand. I've had it running for over a week with 2 Penguin 170 filters and bio-wheels. I'll probably leave one running for carbon filtering but I just purchased an AquaC Remora protein skimmer with a 1200 Maxi-jet pump and pre-skimmer for good measure which I'll drain to a separate container below the aquarium. I haven't taken any measurements besides temperature yet and will do so shortly after putting in so more live rock next week. There is currently nothing alive in my tank and I'm not in a hurry until I'm confident all is set up according to recommendations. I would like to have some easy to take care of corals added later and a few fish. I'm thinking 5 or 6 with some hermits and a couple of starfish. Any recommendations would be wholly appreciated. As a newbie, I know that there is a lot I need to learn but I'll be attacking this project voraciously because my kids have been after me to set up a beautiful aquarium and it's my excuse for jumping back into the hobby after so many years. Thanks, again. Bob

If it wasn't for this site I would be out of this hobby due to frustration!

Make sure you start testing for ammonia right away, you'll never know if your cycle has started or completed if you don't watch it rise and fall. As for being voracious with set up, I would advise to take things slow, remember that salt water is nothing like fresh water, you're now in charge of a mini ecosystem, not just a tank full of fish.

Be sure to read through here to get the basics.

Good Luck

You've come to the right place. Just about any salt related question can be answered on this site. Hope to see a thread with your tank in it.

Hello

Hello

Hello, my name is Foster White and I am just getting back into salt water tanks after an almost 20 year absence. I have all but forgot what I know about the hobby and from what I hear many things have changed.

I am currently setting up a 72 gallon bow front reef tank. This will be a major endeavor for me because of the space the tank is located on ( Wife mandated 100 year old sideboard ) will not accommodate a trickle filter. I am working with Gordon at Wet Pets in Montgomery Al to get me a hang on filter/skimmer combo that should do the job I need. I am open to any and all recommendations. Thanks and I'm looking forward to learning all I can from you guys.
