Hi, My name is sherman. I am completely new to the hobby. I have been a reptile and amphibian man since a little kid but always ooed and ahhd looking at the reef tanks. I finally bought my first tank the other day. I picked up a oceanic 45 tech from my local pet store ricks fish n pet. I am soo excited! Plans right now are compiling a list of all needed items to get a running tank and try to learn the ropes. Reef tanks seem to take a lot of knowledge to keep them up. Hopefully it wont be that difficult. I have no idea yet. So I'll be asking alot of questions and doing alot more reading!

Been on here awhile, never made a formal in here....

Hey folks, my name is Patrick. I am happy to have stumbled upon this wonderful site, looks as though I will be able to learn much from the experiences (both positive and negative) and expertise from those of you who have made great investments in your own set-ups.

We live near Denver and have for many years, our family vacations in Florida every summer and I believe that is from where our cumulative interests in the hobby were borne. My 14 year-old son is also keenly interested in marine biology, spent a week recently at Sea Camp in San Diego.

The plan now is for a 90 gallon tank with corals - not sure yet with type(s), and of course our favorite critters so far - no doubt clowns, gobies, and I have a real interest in fire shrimp.....but will admit that I need to learn more about compatibility.

Have been researching lighting (leaning, tilting heavily toward investing in good LED. The rest I am still learning about, have read postings from one of your members and I will admit to feeling a bit overwhelmed. It seems the keys to me are patience, lots of research, attention to detail, a sound plan, and another healthy dose of patience!

Any suggestions, comments are welcome, I look forward to this site being a useful tool.

Hello guys/ gals, I'm a newbie w/ big plans! Lol....how often do you hear that. It's an honor to be a part of Reef Central. Looking forward to getting to know some of you guys. I'm planning a 125/G 72x18x22. If anybody has any good blueprints, I'm all eyes and ears. Looking forward to getting my build in process. I'm still a little confused as to where all PVC goes and what exactly goes into and out of back of tank (standpipe, overflow, return, ER overflow, etc. Also, still fuzzy on placement of everything in sump. I know it's different form tank to tank, but some things are mandatory right.? I understood one thing since I've been here. "beananimal" is an overflow master!". Lol... Take care guys!

Greetings fellow travelers. I'm getting back into the hobby after an eight year hiatus due to relocating. I am currently in the planning stage and have been collecting invaluable information from this community. This site is worth it's weight in sunken treasure.

I am very new to the hobby and would like to start out slow. Was going to visit aquatic treasures in Collinsville, IL and go from there. Is this a good place to start or should I look elsewhere?

55g fowlr

55g fowlr

Hi Guys and Gals. I'm new to Marine Fish and the RC website, so I thought I would drop by and say hey.

My story, a guy from work had a 55G seemless front acrylic marine tank setup and running with stand, hood, overflow boxes, wet dry sump with built in skimmer prefilter, trickle plate, bio balls, and heater, pair of clowns, powder blue tang, and 60 pounds of live rock. His wife told him they could get a new big screen tv if they get rid of the tank, and they also needed new carpet which we all know is hard to do with a tank still in the room. He gave it to me for free.

I went over Thanks Giving weekend and we emptied it out and hauled it to my house. Its been two weeks and the tank has been running great. We dumped all the live sand out due to huge volume of dead materials so we just trashed it. I added 30lbs of crushed coral about a week after we got it home and seems to be doing well. The guy who had it before didn't have the light on a timer which I since have setup to have 15 hours on, plus the added light from my living room windows 1 on east and 1 on the west side of our place seems to be giving the live rock new life. It was kind of a dank dark dreary brown and black when we set it up due to lack of natural or artifcial light at his place. Now, it has lots of pink, blue, green, and even a dark purple velvet looking material growing out of it.

This weekend my mother and wife bought a few more fish as a Christmas gift. The tank now has a dwarf coral beauty angel, a blue/green chromis, a yellow tailed damsel, a cleaner shrimp, and a fire tail goby. The clowns took exception to their happy little home having any new guests as they were the only ones with the tang in the tank for nearly 4 years. Things have since settled. Everyone seems to have picked their hiding hole out and have for the most part stopped chasing each other around.

I've read a good many websites on keeping marine tanks, already read an entire book on feeding live foods (not sure that I will), I'm about done reading the Marine Aquarium Handbook, and still reading and learning lots from the RC website. I would eventually like to upgrade the single T8 light to get up to the range I could keep a few corals and an anemone for my clowns. But thus far, the tank is beautiful, the fish are colorful and have tons of personality, and I couldn't be happier with my free tank.

Things seem to have all settled out. I have no trace ammonia any more, no copper, PH is staying pretty steady 8.2-8.3, Nitrite has been 0 the entire time, nitrate was way up before I added the crushed coral substrate. I've done a 5G water change each week the last 2 weeks, which the other guy never changed, only added water. He also nuked the entire filter a few days before we moved it, which I believe gave way to the trace amonia and high nitrates when I started testing. Also extremely surprising, the fish made the move just fine even though I live in Indiana and it was only like 30 degrees outside when we did it. Lots of people have all kinds of trouble with the powder blue tang dieing. I'm not sure what to attribute his success to in this tank, but I'm guessing he was small when purchased and this is all he knows. He loves to pace the back of the tank and pull flips and figure 8's around and over the rocks. Their a great bunch to watch and I hope they stay healthy and happy.

Hello all, my name is Alex. I'm a 27 year old engineer from Toronto, Canada.

I have been in then aquarium hobby for just under 6 months (FW thus far, success with gouramis, rasboras, otto cats and plants), and just this weekend purchased my 2nd tank, a 46G Euro Bow-front aquarium. My plans are to turn this guy into a reef tank. I have already added the salt, argonite gravel (and a cocktail shrimp to start the N-cycle), have about 60lbs of cured live-rock arriving tomorrow, and have 3 160GHP maxi-jet power heads. API Test kits have been ordered (NO3, NO4, dkH, Ca, pH, Phos, Cu). I am a little confused about a few things, and would greatly appreciate some advice:

1) I have purchased four T5 HO light strips (36", 2x39W acnitic, 2x39W 10k), and am curious about whether is is sufficient for my needs. Specifically, I am interested in softies, anemones, and maybe some of the hardier LPS corals. Is my purchase is sufficient for these needs?

2) I am a little unsure about which protein skimmer to buy. Given my current power-head output, how many GPH should I plan from my skimmer? Also, any makes/models you can recommended purchasing, or staying away from?

If my questions have been answered in another forum, please redirect as I was unable to find.

Any help you can offer this newbie is much appreciated.

Thank you.

Sincerely,
Alex

Okay so Im a fairly new member. Not new to the hobby though. I had a 55g reef tank that was stocked with lots of softies, lots of inverts and a lionfish. I left the care of my tank to my brother for a few months who allowed the system to crash. Now i want to move the tank to a bigger tank. I have 2 opions, a standard 48" 75 gallon or a 60" extra tall 120 gallon. Since Im not in a hurry, i want to do it right. I wanna do LED lighting with a controller and PH and temperature logging. Since my 55 was allowed to die is the live rock still "alive"? How can I revive it? Ive been planning for the 75 a bit more. I wanna do 48,54,or 60 XP-E and XP-G leds over it with 70 degree optics. What number will i be best with since i will keep mainly softies? I think i may try a clam too though. Ill just put narrower optics over that though. How much more will the lighting needs be over the 120? Like I said, im in no hurry, I wanna do everything right so i can almost set it and forget it. Any opinions are welcome........Thank you.

Hello, i am a new member and new to fish keeping. I was (easily) brought in to this really addicting hobby by a friend who offered me a 54 gallon corner/stand reef tank he took down (for free). He also gave me the custom designed sump, a euro reef cs6-2 skimmer and mag 9.5 pump.

So far i have the tank cycling with 65 lbs of live rock and it is in it's 2nd week and looking good. I havent been able to check numbers yet because i a have been flying for work the past 1.5 weeks. Cant wait to get home and get some more live rock and hopefully soon a clean up crew to start.

Honestly, i wasnt looking to go coral, but have since changed my mind as it really adds to the tank look. I will wait till I get upgraded lighting for that though. (right now i am running 2-t5's)

I plan on this being my "beginner" tank andmay just stay FOWLR and piece together my next tank before breaking this one down.
Good to be here and i must say the knowledge available is great!! Nick

Howdy folks,
I am a new member here and new to the hobby. I love saltwater fishing and the ocean wildlife, kayaking, snorkeling, etc. I figured this would be a good hobby to get into since I work all the time now and can't have a dog as a pet!

I have always loved aquariums, and I would like to get a nice big one to start. I don't want to screw anything up though, so hopefully I can find some good guides and such before I start!
