Is Tanked (TV show) getting a little better?

US scientists and biologists say it right. I heard it on NPR yesterday : A-crop-ora

Ill trust Dr. Veron and Eric Borneman's pronunciations of Latin names more than NPR radio.

When I said 98% of Americans, I was including some biologists and scientists as well.

I work in TV and I can tell you 99% of the reality shows are "produced". They don't usually have a script per-say but they have producers coaching them on what to do and say a lot of the time. They'll give them a general idea of what they want and have them do a scene. Then if the producer wants something specific done or said they'll tell them that and they'll do another take or just an insert. This is a generalization on most of the reality shows like this. It's all made for entertainment.

I've worked on similar shows to this, a lot of car build shows and it's the same thing. Sure they are building a car for a customer but the producers amp up why the customer wants the car or that a mechanic has a hard time with something or that someone stole some other guy's lunch or whatever. It's all made for entertainment purposes. It just helps if the people (actors) are actual people in the world of what they are portraying. Also in general reality shows are cheaper them scripted shows. So if the production pays for the cost of a build and tear down it's still a lot cheaper then paying for the cost of actual actors and the higher production value that goes with scripted shows. In the end the network who pays for it all still makes a lot of money on a show like Tanked after paying for builds and tear downs.

From "Aquarium Corals" by Eric H. Borneman page 221:
(ah-crop'-or-ah OR ak'-roh-pohr'-ah)

Interestingly enough, I think no one is wrong? Case closed? :p

show stinks, tanks stink, one girl is "hot"; however, i wouldn't let those two dummies water my lawn...imo!!!

I always got weird looks when I worked at a LFS when correctly pronouncing corals Latin names, but even though it's not the "norm", stylophora, goniopora montipora are all pronounced this way. I'll try to dig up the Charlie Veron interview but that was on vimeo I think.

I used to say them incorrectly as well, all it took was a phone convo with Gavin at Pacific aqua farms to realize "the norm" way these corals are pronounced is actually incorrect.

Yes, that's how he chooses to pronounce it. From his book Aquarium Corals he says it can be either or.

(ah-crop'-or-ah OR ak'-roh-pohr'-ah)

I agree nobody is wrong here, but considering Charlie Veron says it this way as well, and let's face it he is the godfather of coral classification, I "choose" to believe it is the correct way to pronounce it/them.

Nothing wrong with that, it would be interesting to take some Latin classes to understand pronunciation better. :)

What bugs me about many of these "reality" shows is the fake drama they insert. Smithsonian Channel's "Mighty Ships" is a good example. They follow various ships during routine voyages and are always trying to artificially amp up the drama. Drama that isn't really there. Its often routine maintenance that is made into some kind of crisis. "The entire voyage will be a complete failure and puts the whole ship's crew at risk if the mechanics don't get this valve fixed by 5 pm!1!!" The valve always gets fixed.

Yeah but it makes you watch the show.

There is the same drama on tanked. At the end of the day, I'm sure some tanks for the show stay. But many are done just for the filming.

Wade is supposedly building a house in Vegas with the worlds largest private aquarium. Maybe they will have a show on it in the future.

How I got hooked up with them was I actually reached out and wanted to know if hey wanted to use my house as part of the show. You can see my build thread in my signature. They actually responded but by then the show focus had shifted to celebrities and I in the end decided I did t want my family and home paraded around on tv.

I stuck with them for he tank build and am very happy with the tank but the show is the show. Most of it is made up and take, including many of the themes they make.

Is Tanked (TV show) getting a little better?

The show is what it has to be.. I think it's entertainment and nothing more. Does it represent reefing? Of course it doesn't. Does it show how big projects are executed under a tight timeline? I think it does. My wife got us tickets last year for the tour and I must say I enjoyed it. Quite a few actual reef tanks in the employees cubicles. The guys were extremely friendly considering how many tourists they must deal with on a daily basis. I love the fact that they turned a passion into a thriving business.

Fish tank kings is another bag of weasles, their "expert" incorrectly pronounces the Latin names.

Probably small potatoes, but it gets under my skin, it's " ak-crop-rah" not "ak-roe-po-rah"

Surely if your being picky that should be scientific names as the route of the word acro is Greek:p

For what it's worth, I just the dictionary I have at home...

Ac-ro-po-ra

I was just curious nothing more, I haven't a clue which way would be "correct"

I would say the smile more tank will be there since he is a successful reefer.
The tank in pawleys island did not do so well. Owners lost all those fish but nine. The LFS that helped with the other freshwater tank in SC tried to get the maintainence contract told me. I asked him did they really move that fast with fish. He said there is a delay, but it's still stocked to soon. They had to use lots of bottled bacteria for the fresh tank he helped with. He said the owners of the pawleys island tank was out of a ton of money thru fish loss

exposure to bring new people in the hobby is great so i can't fault the show for advertising how awesome the hobby can be.
now that being said... the show, for obvious reasons; doesn't usually spend much time on the finer points (skimmer, lighting and other equipment) and chooses to focus on the exotic shaped tanks they create. a goldfish tank shaped like a pair of dice comes to mind and the thought of cleaning it is horrifying to me lol.
if the viewer can reason out that most of their installs are just for show and not really about the silly themed tanks they build it can be interesting.

I'm curious why everyone says bio - balls are outdated don't work and so on..... Years ago when I had my first reef running with bio balls and lava rock yes lava rock my reef was awesome. Look at Paul B still runs old school under gravel and none of us have a reef as successful as his. In all due respect Paul,I think if you were to give him a sump he would turn it into a hot tub for a supermodel
