Is Tanked (TV show) getting a little better?

I look at the show as a good way to get people excited about keeping tanks at home. Sure the tanks are over the top and not even close to reality, but the more people interested in this hobby the more options we all will have.

without an ounce of live rock i really wonder what keeps those tanks running....bio balls and mega water changes? early 80's technology? lights so dim they dont grow algae? it boggles my mind...at least they now use natural sea water (like to see the details of that sponsorship deal) instead of adding all the fish 10 minutes after adding the salt

FYI bio balls was 90's, Bio Bale came first. It's not the best show on tv, but nowhere near the bottom.

Just cruious-anyone know what their tanks go for. Maybe a custom 300G rectangular tank.

Well you figure they fill all their tanks with NutraSeaWater which goes for around $25 for 4 gallons. Multiple that by 300 gallons using your example and you are looking at $7500 for the water alone ;)

I think your math is a little off...:worried:

I enjoy the show itself and watching them build/setup the tanks.

HOWEVER i still dont approve of them throwing in a bunch of fish at one time so quickly... And some of the fish that they do put in a tank together is just asking for trouble. They stock about 10x more than they should.

They use bioballs for the fish only tanks. You can see them putting them in.

For the big installs, they use sand filters (like pool filters).

They did go with the expensive bacteria seeded artificial purple/pink live rock - forgot the name - for a reef tank they did for a couple with a T or L shaped tank.

I like it because it gives me some interesting DIY ideas.
I'm not big on acrylic (glass guy) but their constructions get interesting when they go commercial or industrial grade (concrete, steel, fish rooms, industrial chillers).
As far as the fish count or adding them all at once - based on the scale of the constructions, it's not that bad. A 5000 gal can accommodate a lot of fish. They use instant bacteria to seed or pre-seed their filters.

You can start a reef tank nearly instantaneously with cured live rock that's properly handled and transported. It's all about $$. If you spend enough, you can have a instant tank.

Never hear them talk about or see them QT before putting into DT. What would be their logic if they don't-they don't care or they feel that fish coming from Sea Dwelling Creatures don't need to be QT'd at home?

Bio balls are about the most outdated form of filtration available. The fact they still use them in new installs lets you know they either aren't very educated or just don't care, neither of which is acceptable when spending huge sums of cash for something they provide. Anyone who uses them has way too much money and not a lot of knowledge on anything saltwater related. Sea dwelling creatures sure does love them.
