Is Tanked (TV show) getting a little better?

Real reef rock is what they used for the actual reef.

Acting is terrible, stocking and fish choice is terrible and filtration is terrible.

However I do watch sometimes. The actual tanks are quite cool.

bio balls and sand filters are actually still used in a lot of commercial installs.

they're rarely putting reefs in. They're usually just doing fresh or saltwater fish only tanks.

I'm with you on the sand filters. I don't really watched tanked much.

Bioballs, sand filters, ... Basically any capable media and then they use tons of bacteria. Money is no object.

They did create one reef with coral once where they used the purple artificial live rock (brand name, but I forget which) that was pre-seeded.

Argument was that it keeps from having to collect the rock from the ocean that is quickly becoming devoid of live rock...

When the show got away from fish tanks and more into their personal drama and "wacky antics" I stopped watching. So basically I stopped after season 1.

apart from seeing and learning about the fish (adds up to about 2 mins of the show) there is nothing I like about it unfortunately.

Im sticking with BRS, but maybe because that's because im in this hobby. outsiders seem to like Tanked.

I enjoy it for entertainment value and not for education. Brett and Wade are entertaining to watch. It is my 3 year old son's favorite show. I watched Fish Tank Kings with him as well and he did not enjoy that at all. Those guys were boring. You have to remember that this is tv and caters to the masses and does not cater to us fish and reef geeks.

Fish tank kings is another bag of weasles, their "expert" incorrectly pronounces the Latin names.

Probably small potatoes, but it gets under my skin, it's " ak-crop-rah" not "ak-roe-po-rah"

Haven't been to the Vegas location in a couple of years. When we went, my wife and I were greeted by 'the General' and he led us on a tour of the facility. Professional outfit, despite the 'unreality' of the show. On our way out we met Wade and Brett, who are definitely better off camera than on. I would have a beer with them. They seemed to be enjoying their 15 minutes of fame. Seems you now need to get tix for a tour and they have become like Pawn Stars.
But I still like the show for the fish buying trips. Gotta become better friends with my LFS ownerrs and get inside Sea Dwelling Creatures

They built my tank. Tank quality is solid. I got a quote from them to do my filtration. It was bio balls and stuff. No skimmer. I did filtration on my own.

The tank is 96x48x40. Cost was about 15k. Have to check the exact amount.

The stand is steel- about 2500 I think.

They screwed up the stand and had to remake it.

Nice guys and I would probably buy from them again. I visited a couple of times and met Frankie and wade. But once they found out I wasn't doing the filtration and install with them, attitude changed and not as nice.

Regardless- they are knowledgable and out of all the outfits I tried to get in touch with to build my roughly 1000 gallon system, they were the most responsive and professional. They had their **** together whereas I kept getting the run around from other people I contacted.

Overall a decent experience. From what I could gather- what they do on the show is nothing what they promote in real life. The tanks they build for the show are just that- show. They get installed and get taken down. I saw the Pete Rose tank, Dwayne wade tank and a bunch others in their facility. Apparantly Pete Roses wife wouldn't let them in the house. They did the install in the backyard. Filmed the show and tore it all down.

Awww.. Really?

That's so sad. Why tear it down?? Who gets it afterwards?

Some of those custom installs are massive. I can't imagine that the cost of tearing those down would be economically viable vs. leaving them up and taking the loss - either as cost of advertising, donation, or just a plain tax write-off.

They probably get paid more per episode than they spend on those tanks. Something similar to fishing fleets on the show Deadliest Catch. They actually make enough money being featured on the show, that the fishing is almost for show. They undercut the price and screw up the whole market. But, the tv money more than makes up for it. Wouldn't be surprised if this were the same situation. Who cares if you have to build and tear down a 50k tank if Animal planet pays them 100k to do it?
