Is Tanked (TV show) getting a little better?

One thing that drives me nuts about that show is adding live sand, then pouring water in the tank, then supposedly later in the day adding fish in a balanced tank. There's no way to add sand, pour water in it and the water not stay cloudy for at least 24 hrs.

Actually, you can. With a massive skimmer, and a monster DI, you can.

Also, if the sand was heavily washed so the fine particles were removed, it would be ok.

And, if you use a cascade medium (like a bowl or rock stack) to allow the water to flow in slowly, that reduces the dust up.

So- it can be done- just not commonly done.

i understand what you're getting at but there is literally no way of knowing how well the sand was washed of particulate matter prior to adding it to your system.
i think the point he was trying to make was that "hollywood magic" makes their tanks seem to be the standard to the noobs and causes panic when they fill their tanks only to be treated to a 24-36 hour cloud period. in fact, the whole show seems to run across those lines in that the tanks are unrealistic in terms of function. those who have ran a tank know that detritus settles, algae forms and anything short of having the tank professionally cleaned regularly will result in a once-attractive-for-tv tank looking like a piece of garbage.

I saw on the show a cubicle had a sweet nano- would love to see them do a reef tank

They have done two actually. One for a military and lawyer couple and another for an Asain family. I think they were both in season 2 or 3 though unsure. I dont think they like to do them for the show since they can't show much as the corals take a long time to grow out and the tank needs more time before they can really be placed in there.

The show is made to appeal to everyone. Or as many as possible. for us there are many aspects we notice as wrong or problematic and it would be entertaining if we saw more, but for the people who just want to see "the pretty fish" it's done properly and properly to showcase and simplify their sponsors product. I'm not arguing with anyone. I'm just saying the stuff we want to see majority of people who watch the show do not and wouldn't understand in the 30 minutes or so of show.

Its live sand with bacteria in it and its nutri-seawater.

I just look at Tanked as a fun show, I know its a TV show and you can not do most of what they do in real life.

I'm sure they charge a fortune for those fake coral inserts. Don't make much money installing live rock only. I'm sure they steer their customers towards the benefits of a "custom coral insert."

I still like the show. I'll watch it until it goes off the air. I mean, come on, it's a show about building fish tanks! Even if you don't agree with everything they do, how many people get a show dedicated to their hobby...

"Tonight on Stamp Collectors...." "Last week on Model Train Wars..."

And the ridiculuous tanks give us something to hate-watch. I do forward the in-office pranks and shenanigans.

I really liked the Smile More tank from last week. Great fish-only tank - simple, understated, amazing fish inside.

And those guys are laughing all the way to the bank.

I'm still learning myself. I've only been doing saltwater for a couple of years. Recently they did a tank at Mercy Health Saint Mary's Hospital where my wife works. She told me they were there doing the show and I went and saw it the next time I was in. It was packed full of fish. I mean, sure, they have a huge filtration section under the tank, but they added the fish so quick and so many of them that they had a TON of die off. Responsible reef-keeping at its worst IMO. The tank is beautiful, but of course the fake corals were covered in algae in no time. The tank looked a little better the last time I was in there, but the local shop doing maintenance basically had to start from scratch after most of the fish died or were removed because so many fish were dying.

They didn't look like they were laughing much after the flour cannon went off. :lolspin:

For what it's worth, I just the dictionary I have at home...

Ac-ro-po-ra

I was just curious nothing more, I haven't a clue which way would be "correct"

While I agree tomatoe vs tomato, look at the vids I posted of well known biologists pronouncing it the correct way.

I would think most of their customers are not reef hobbyist, so coral inserts would be the right choice for most of their builds. Corals are not for commercial or celebrity tanks, unless one has the time and passion to dedicate for the tank.

+1 on your reasons to like the show. When I need a fix on reef tank builds, I just go to you tube or here.

I just couldn't wrap my head around someone already having a beautiful reef tank and wanting a fish only tank without any live rock. Although I totally get wanting a fish-only tank since as well as a reef.

It did look like they built a fish room because you can see a large water container and some equipment in a nearby room in one of the shots.

I am getting bored with the celebrity build though. It's becoming more of "tour the celebrity house, shenanigans, oh look a large fish tank" than it used to be. I really enjoyed the builds in peoples' houses who were just fish enthusiasts.

Are you that bored with life?

I guess I apparently am despite not being on here a month or so because I was busy living life, maybe you are just ticked because I am right.

You people are funny.

I didn't take Alton's reply to be in a kind manner, personally I after reading through some of the stuff he posts in other threads he seems to be kinda of a "bully".

Either way, in this case I know I am right, he is wrong. I took his " you must be bored with life as an insult" so, yeah. Its pretty obvious he is a bit sore about it.

awwww
