agree

there must be more then just lights, to get tanks like that

Nuclear Reefs (Nathan),

there's a reason for the red colored bulbs as stated before. Its for shallow water corals. Very shallow. Its suppose color up histrix, poci or any other pink/ red colored coral even more. The red spectrum terminates very fast in deeper waters.

Also, lighting has a lot to do with coral coloring. If you give them the light spectrum they originated from, you are going to get the fullest out of them. Thats one thing the Japanese have mastered as you can tell from this post and previous ones. They dotn spotlight corals just so it would look different on one end of the tank.

How come we don't have shrimps like those?

Look at where they orginated from. Japan, Australia, etc. Its very unlikely that we get animals shipped from those areas. The most common areas are Fiji, Bali, etc.

BTW, does anyone know what this coral is?

I would love to get my hands on either one.:)

Travis, the bottom pic resembles a Simplex. And for the first one.. if anyone can translate Japanese, Ã" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢fÃ" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢B?[Ã" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢vÃ" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢AÃ" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢NÃ" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢?Ã" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢|Ã" Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢"šÂ¬Ã‚° sp A. Sp.

Amazing thread! So who is going to take an extended trip to Japan to research their reef tanks and report back to us? So jealous about those shrimp...

Here's the new IceCap bulb:

An article about them is here.

Nice to see someone is working towards this. I will be waiting until they get higher color temps.

EDIT: just saw they had a 20k. how about 50 or red spectrum? :)

Is electricity cheaper in Japan? Some of those tanks are running a LOT of MH's. I can't imagine what their electric bills are. Not to mention the heat generated by all of those bulbs. Maybe that is one of the reasons none of them have canopies... they need the open air flow to keep the area above the tank cool.

Anybody notice that in all the japanese tank pics there is no background. The is no coralline algea on the back. Its just a see-through box.

Very interesting as I think most of us run the back covered in corralline, and some of us run our sides covered in coralline.
