Japanese - sumthing, sumthing (pics)

I cannot locate a Magnetic ballast for these new PAR bulbs.. I guess the ANSI code m160 is a HQI that isnt not on any distribution list. The Icecap 150 is the best bet or any electronic . I sent Iwasaki an email regaurding these to find out our options on them.

Needless to say...speechless. Does anyone have any idea the origins of their sps colonies? I mean do they have an active frag exchange in Japan? Moreover, are their colonies grown from frags or wild collected? We all know that initially placing a large sps colony bought from some dealer in the states would look great before browning or RTNing and later replaced with another bought wild colony. Can these reefers also be guilty of this practise? If not, how old are these tanks...any idea of their actual growth rates?

i would say their is a frag exchange going on their... and Im guessing the corals are wild caught mostly.. I dont know what kinda LFS's they have over their... It would be interesting to see though

Yes, they do have LFS's that sell acro's. BUT.. they also get some of their colonies through the wild on their own when diving throughout Japan.

Some examples of websites that sells acros :

Reef Kuki's http://www.reef-kuki.com/
C.P. Farm www.cpfarm.com

Japanese also do sell frags, but this is very uncommon by what I have read and seen. Thats why most of the corals you see are already colony sized.

Yes, they also do get RTN. Reading through their diaries, I have seen some of the corals RTN.

Lemme refrain that,, I started looking at some of their equipment .. yikes,,, single 250 watt halides 700$ bulb, ballast, fixture, first born and left leg!

The bulbs are

$72 for the 6500K
$91 for the Blue
$111 for the Pink

at a local light supply company. I am going to try one of each bulb. I will post pictures once I get the bulbs and ballasts (2 weeks).

Very cool posts. I lurk here so much that I'd thought I'd just say something. The fish in these pics are also remarkable. I think I saw a butterfly that was not a copperband or racoon in a reef.

FWIW, the SPS sold here are what I'd guess are on the line between large frags and small colonies. You do sometimes see shops which claim to sell only wild colonies (such as that Kuki place, which I haven't visited, as my friend Matt told me his attitudes to sustainability were rather questionable/illegal). A much better shop is our favourite, Natural, which sells some really nice corals, many of which are maricultured in the Phillipines and elsewhere. See this link http://natyu.ne.jp/seitai/listin2.html

The link takes you to the latest arrivals. The first three links on the left are for Acroporas.

Unfortunately, the SPS section of my tank is limited to a vase montipora (a lovely rich brick red colour) as I tried an Acropora rather too early in my tank's life, which RTN'ed and as a result, I decided to hold off on more SPS until my next tank. Matt, has a much better selection (though he also has rather more years in the hobby than me!). Still, I'm planning for next tank already (which will be SPS only), so it's research, research, research for me from now on (hence my presence in this forum).

Burntom,,, do you have pics of your current setup? and what kinda supplements are available to you over their? Or you ordering from the states?

Hey NuclearReefs,

No pictures I'm afraid (or, that is say, I have one on my cell, but have no way of uploading it). I ordered most of my equipment from Marine Depot, as even with shipping across the Pacific, it worked out cheaper than buying the stuff here. Only major equipment purchase here was the tank and stand (total of $1100).

As for supplements, the whole raft of US/European stuff is available here, with the addition of even more Japanese stuff. To be honest, I tend to avoid supplements and try to do regular water changes as a way of keeping up with the trace elements, so I'm not too well informed on that area (plus I have very little in the way of SPS).

One major complaint I have here is the lack of Zoanthids, other than the standard green and orange. I guess certain things are hard to come by whereever you are, but it's really frustrating seeing all the colours available in the States when I look on RC>

For the future tank, I'm going to be going with a BB setup, but not sure about the size yet. That'll in part depend on budget and house size when I get back to the UK in 2006.

Good deal Summer,,,, did they get your a electronic ballast as well? or are you going with the Icecap?

Nathan

I am either going to run the Ice Caps or the ARO ballasts. The vendor said most any HID electronic ballast used to run HQI bulbs will run the PAR36 bulbs.

Okay,, thanks,, I had been looking for the spec on the bulb and could only find that mysterious m160 ANSI code...I couldnt find that anywhere in a magnetic style ballast...

Travis,

I think Ejocam is on target with the Pichoni.

Here is a pic i found on SPLASH selling a Pichoni. The first one you were asking about:

Here's a Simplex:

And a Walindii

Thanks Invicible. The Pichoni does look pretty close. Although it is hard to tell because it is still a pretty small colony. I'm pretty sure it isn't a Simplex because it appears to have a more closed branch structure than the more open Simplex. The first picture I asked about almost looks like a "well groomed" Walindii.

Has any one found out anymore about these new lights im upgradeing to a 125 next year and was going to buy a mh setup ready to go but instead of spaending the 700-8-- on this i rather do something like theres if i can also i take it they dont have moonlights no where to put them
