what is it that makes a zoa "japanese"?

Being born in Japan......;)

Japan has a few small coral reefs in the southern area.

lol, smarta**!:D

Seriously though, is there any way to distinguish these guys, or is every e-tailer gonna label their zoas as "Japanese" now and charge $100 for a 4 polyp frag?

I picked up a couple of nice mini-colonies over the weekend that look alot like a couple that have been posted.

those are beautiful!!! i love the green ones. Im definitely in vote for JAPANESE ZOAS as the next big hit. It's already started......

They're priced from the range of Cdn$55 - 65.00 a colony.
Mind you some of the pictures being posted here belongs to a local LFS shots from our local Forum ....

A little off subject, but does anyone know if its illegal to ship or bring zoas across the border of the US and Canada. I've found a couple Canadian sites that sell these "deepwater" zoas, but I can't find any regulations on shipping or crossing the border with zoas.

I've contacted a couple places in Canada, and they were very hesitant to try to ship them and I dont wanna go to jail when crossing the border with them lol.

None its not illegal just illegal to get a zoa straight from japan shipped to the US. You should serious consider coming up here we got some amazing stuff. (Not just the deepwaters)

I don't mean the trade name, where did they come from. Are they just some sort of deepwater zoa? How do you tell?

The last picture posted by Jay03GT and the picture by Bluespot22 above of the green and purple palythoas are the same as a frag I bought from a local shop here in NC a month or so ago. There is also the same green and purple center with orange fringe version. I thinks Jay's second picture is pretty close. The frag I bought had about 10 or so polyps and now has almost twice that many. They are listed as Japanese. I have looked around and did not come across a common name for them. I don't care where they came from or what their name is. I just think they are nice looking palys.

that's what I'm saying Crazy, I bought them because I liked them. But nobody has been able to say how to I.D. these mysterious Japenese zoas, despite all the pics that have been thrown up.

Jay put a name on them yourself them! I figure names for all the different morphs have to come from somewhere right. I have looked over all of the major forums online and ZoaID and did not see the purple and green combo in the form we have. There is the Purple Hornet of course but it has the purple and green skirt. and the thin green ring towards the center. There is another that has the same shirt combo but the fatter green ring with the ones listed here. But I never came across ones with all green shirt and fat green ring. I say coin name em'.

"Deepwater" and "japanese" zoas seem to be alot of marketing hype, but I wish my LFS had anywhere near as colorful of zoas as what has been posted. I just have problems finding something different locally that I dont already have.

There is a little hope for me next week. the girlfriend and I will be the first people at my LFS next week the day after they get 100 new zoa colonies.

So, is there a name for these because I just bought a colony of them a few weeks ago? The rock has a few other colors on it but mostly those

I agree with what you are saying. I bought all the ones I posted for $30 each, and they all around 30 polyps. I buy what I like, I don't care about the name.:)

Tropicorium just got a big shipment of Japanese zoanthids in. Pretty good looking stuff.

40-50 heads for $50, that's just nuts. I'm headed there this week to scope them out.

I do believe alot of these zoanthids have been around for some time. Just my theory but all these new Japanesse zoanthids are just same old ones blasted with actinic and photoshopped. Then you add that with the recent progression with everyone shooting macro shots of everything.
