JBJ NanoCube 24 DX 2006 It's HERE yippie!

Thank You all for your kind words. I really am very pleased with the JBJ NanoCube. I love the size of the 24.

My Fission skimmer had got to where it wasn't skimming. It looked like it was just swirling water and no Fizz. I had taken it out to blow out the hose and didn't put it back right. So then it didn't work right... So today I went to my RC meeting and I carried it with me. A few fellow reefers looked at it, Then one of them Figured it out. The little air hose triangle plastic piece wasn't hooked into one of the slots in the pump. I put it back into the tank and it started working like it should. Thank Goodness:) And Thanks to my reefer Friend who fixed it for me!!!

Good Morning.

Hi Amanda, Do you have a state Forum? If so then see if they have meetings, and if not maybe you and RJ could get one going. That's all it takes is posting it in the State forum. Look for others like you that Love this hobby. Our meetings are once a month.

We just go around to our LFS that help support by hosting the meetings and this too gets a lot of reefers in their store and they sell a lot on that day. Some of our fellow reefers even have them in their homes.

We travel any where from 1 to 3 hrs. away. Most of the time just the 1hr. With in 60 miles.In our club we don't have dues or anything. We have some really knowledgeable reefers who have a demo on whatever can help out. Once , we had a demo on the Auto top off. Yesterday it was on Oceans Motions. That thing is GREAT BTW. I wish I had one in my tank. Moves water like crazy.
Any way, We just have a couple of reefers who offer to set it up and the people show up. We had like maybe 40 or more there.GREAT Meeting :)

Yes Mary, we have a MI reefers association, and I have paid dues, although have never been to a meeting! I just don't always have time and I have no one to go with. Except RJ, but he's 2 hours from me.

You need to GO girl !!!! I go by myself a lot. My hubby will go with me sometimes. When you get there, there is SO many to talk to. I some times feel sorry for my hubby, He just stands around waiting for me, cause I am off yakking with everyone else:D. Yesterday, I went alone and had a BLAST, just getting to see every one again and talking reefs.

I go to our GRMAS reef meetings, we have our first big frag swap in Zeeland, MI on Saturday, March 18th.

GRMAS stands for Grand Rapids Marine Aquarium Society. We just started the club this past year and there are about 20 or more people that show up every meeting now. The LFS's really don't like the big swap's and don't like to help in sponsoring anything with them, they feel the big swap's take a lot away from them in the 2 month period around the swap. (Everyone saving/spending there money for great swap items.)

Ya, I'm kinda shy about going somewhere I have never been to and introducing myself to strangers though. If RJ goes, I"ll go!

Amanda, You are SHY???? You would never know that talking to you here on RC. You are So out going and Fun to talk to.:)

The first time I went, my hubby did go with me and it did help. After that I was fine. Every one is SO friendly and helpful. The thing about it is, you have this hobby and you do have something to talk about. Some times just listening to some one else you learn ALOT!!!.

RJ, We even swap at the meetings even if it is at a LFS. I guess the ones here, they are not just LFS. They love this hobby like we do. They are Awesome stores. I even had extra Cheato that I gave to the Fish store owner. He said he would have gave $20 for a bag that size. He has given me frags before and lots of discounts. Nice Guy!!!

I got some Tigger-PODS and Phyto Feast for my Mandarin. He is going to get so fat:) I am going to try culturing them using the Phyto Feast. This stuff is good for soft corals too. It is like DT's.

I have been using Instant Ocean all this time. This time I got the Instant Ocean Reef Crystals. They said it has some better nutrients added.

Mary, I use IO and I have looked at other more expensive salts, but things have worked out so well for me that i figure if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

You're welcome! I'm glad you posted that link in the Alabama forum so I could see where that little skimmer goes -- beautiful tank, Mary! :thumbsup:

I finally got around to some new pics.

Here are the Pictures of the Chambers in the back of the NanoCube. Showing the Fission Skimmer and the foam and return.

Hi Mary,

Your tank looks great! I only hope to have something that nice.

I just purchased the same tank 24G Nanocube.
I also purchased the Fission skimmer from my LFS and I was having significant problems getting it to work, and was thinking that it might be related to the air-line; and based on your post, that appears to be the case.

Did you simply have to recess that little triangle on the airline more towards the pumps impeller, or was there some other fix?
Frankly, I was about to return the thing and give up.

My main reason for posting was to ask you for more information and photos on your filtration modifications, so that I can make similar modifications to improve the filtration.

Questions:
1. Did you have trouble mounting the Fission in Filter Cavity #1?
How did you have to stack the pump under?

2. I see you have macroalgae in Filter Cavity #2.
What light are using for this and how does it mount?
Also, is heat a problem and how long do you leave it on?

3. It looks like you drilled a bulkhead or return into Filter Cavity #3, but your photos are really close-up, so I can't see what's in there. Could you elaborate on this?

4. Did you change out the original return pump?
I think it gives off alot of heat in my set-up and I also think it is the cause of all the microbubles that I am experiencing.
I have considered replacing it, but I'm not sure what would be better. Any thoughts on this?

5. Did you remove all of the stock filtration (Bio balls, foam inserts, other white Bio-media <sorry, forgot what it's called>, and the carbon bag)?

Could you take some additional photos of each cavity and then a wide view or two to see all that you have done?
I think several people will be very interested in your modifications here, I know that I am certainly intrigued.

Sorry for all the questions-
Thank you in advance and keep up the great work!

OK, Let's see to start off with the skimmer.

I did not use the elbows. I just put the skimmer bottom right into the pump. Like it shows in the back of the little booklet that came with the skimmer. It is right beside the skimmer. The intake to the pump is facing under the pump. The air hose little triangle plastic piece needs to fit into one of those little triangle slots in the pump. I think there is 4 of the slots. Any one of them is fine. This is what helps it to make the fizz foam for it to work.

Here is what I posted from a previous post about the 3 Chambers
I did remove all the Bio Balls and every thing. But added the Carbon pack into chamber 1

So far in the Nano's back chambers, this is what I have done.

1st- Chamber bottom part carbon pack, and above that the Fission Skimmer and I am now getting some skimmate collecting.

2nd - Chamber bottom Rock rubble and on top Cheato and a 10w halogen submersible egg light. The light just lays in there. I leave it on all the time. I might turn it off when the lights go out now.

3rd - Chamber bottom 350 gph. pump that goes to the split return. right above it the stock pump that came with it 290 gph to that return. and a 100w heater.( I am not using the heater any more. With the pumps putting off heat I no longer need it. )

I also have the new Surface Skimmer, clipped over the overflow.

I seem to have lots of flow. Hopefully this will be all I need.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Here is the extra pump that I ordered to go to the split return that we added. Also here is the pic of the front of where the returns go in.
Then I had ordered the bulkhead from foster and smith and 90* elbow and some tubing all that I ordered was 1/2"and I got the hoses from www.modularhose.com and they put it together for me.
We drilled using 1 1/8" bit
Works GREAT :)
Since I am not using the heater anymore. My temps in the morning before lights come on 79 to 80. Then evening after the lights come on at around 84 to 85.
Hope this answers your questions :)
Thanks for your comments :)
Thanks Mary, that is very helpful.
I'll start to make the same adjustments to mine.
It is working great. I still have some Macro Bubbles but the skimmer is working and collecting skimmate now.
