JBNY's 270 Ver2.0

From that older post.

I use the Triton Base 4 Part Solution. which is Alk/Ca/Mg/Trace Elements

In addition I dose.
Zinc daily (Triton till I run out then will use Zinc Chloride bought online)
Iodine weekly (Brightwell Iodion)
Manganese Daily (Triton till I run out then will use Manganese Chloride Tetrahydrate)
Nitrates Daily (Potassium Nitrate bought online)
Acropower Daily (TLF)

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I will have some good results to share back with you.

Noticed something interesting yesterday.

For the last few weeks my cyano, which has never been much of an issue, was starting to show up in the display tank. I have not seen cyano in the display tank in well over a year. I have always had some in the frag tank that is plumbed into the main system though.

The cyano in the frag tank has become worse and worse over the last few weeks, about half of the bottom of the tank had cyano on it, and I was noticing more and more cyano in the main tank.

Yesterday I noticed that all the cyano in the frag tank is gone. Not sure what to make of that. I am still dosing the same amount of Mn that I have for a number of weeks, but this Monday started dosing zinc daily too. I also on Monday stopped dosing a different kind of Nitrates due to testing N a little higher than normal.

Very interesting, indeed. I'm curious to see if this affects your cheato growth and by extension, your nutrient levels..

I don't really know what to make of it. My first thought is that it might be related to the Nitrates I am currently using. I am dosing Sodium Nitrate, as Pax Bellum gave me a new formula to try that is different in concentration and type (I use KNO3) than I normally use.

Joe,
Any time i try dosing Acropower i get cyano..for past two years i have tried 3 times and after a week or so cyano pop up.. I am not saying this is a cause but maybe try cut dosing for a few weeks and see..just a thought..

I had the same problem too. It's why I didn't dose acropower for a long time, every time I did I got some cyano. This time I just decided to dose it and see if it would burn itself out. So maybe it just ran it's course in my tank, not sure. Maybe it will come back. I didn't notice if the cyano was gone form the DT tank because when I noticed the lack of cyano in the frag tank it was already late enough that the DT lights were off. I'll have to check it out when I get home later.

Has the Cyano disappeared in the DT? I've been dosing the Zinc daily as well and Cyano pretty much evaporated in the SPS tank...

I may have spoke too soon. It looks like the cyano in the frag tank is disappearing in the evening but is back in the afternoon when the lights come back on. Still have cyano in the DT too. Keeping an eye on it.

I saw a post somewhere where Randy Farley talking about Amino's mentioned that it would likely be an introduction of nitrogen or nitrates to the system.

I've been using it for a couple of months now and haven't seen any cyano. My tank is also N03 limited but anytime I've dosed KN03 I get an algea bloom. Maybe it's throwing your redfield ratio off? If memory serves, you dose KN03 right?

I'd like to do some more research, my memory is fuzzy on what I read before.

Edit: Some of the reading I'm seeing mentions that excessive use of aminos can break down into N03. Not sure if this could be adding to cyano or just giving a nutrient support to it. I have nothing real for you with this post, just following along to see what your results are, lol

Got some frags from Unique Corals a few days ago.

JF Flame, Exquisita Acro, Pink Bali Shortcake, UC "Super Blue vermiculata

Polyp extention is pretty crazy on the hoek, also these two.

Polyps are out so much on the Blue Ice, you can't even see the corallites.

Joe,
Those are some beautiful new pieces, already looking great! Cannot wait to see them grow in your system, congrats on the scores :)

Joe you have some amazing acros!

I'm really beginning to like Acropora hoeksemei a lot, thinking I might need to pick one up sometime. ;)

I measure my NO3 pretty regularly so I'm not sure if that is the cause. N is around 5 ppm, and doesn't seem to move when I dose acropower. But I definitely noticed some cyano when I first started using it. And now I have it in the tank more than I did a few months ago.

Thanks, you and me both are looking forward to seeing the grow up!

Thank you. A. hoeksemai is a cool acro for sure.

Here are two more that are doing good.

This is a the Blue Matrix, it started to grow and then just went dormant, got burnt tips about 6 months ago and never really recovered. About 3 weeks ago I noticed it was started to perk up. Now it has started to encrust the base again and showing some corallite growth too.

Blueberry Fantasy from ReefGen. I have it near the bottom of the tank but it seems to be keeping it's color great so I have not moved it any higher.

Very very nice! Are you still doing daily dosing of Zinc?
