The way the paddle wheel is curved gives a LOT more flow in the forward direction. Unless you have a setup like mind where one side is flipped so alternating directions has one side in forward and the other reversed.
 
does the jebao crossflow come with reverse paddle like the maxspect AA or BB? or can you just reverse the installation of one side to get flow when direction reverses?

Mine had the newer blades, a new motor and a new controller. I also got all the old stuff as spares.

Honestly, I don't mind at all that it doesn't work as well in reverse. If it worked as well in reverse as it does in forward, I'd be running reverse at 10%.

I did make it over to my friend's house and picked up my crossflows (2). I like my 180g mostly sps & lps mixed reef. But my friend has a 300g mostly sps and some lps and a lot of fish. He has great rock work and lots of beautiful acro frags with crazy nice colors. But most are quite small and it will take a year or two and he'll have a gorgeous tank. I'm looking forward to so I can buy some frags from him!

He has a crossflow running in a frag tank and when he runs the power up high, the pump has a small 'shake' like it's out of balance. It didn't make any noise at all, just a visible little bit of movement in the whole unit inside the tank. I promised I'd tell him if mine do that when I set them up. Has anybody here experienced that?
 
hmm, to me the whole point of gyre is to be able to run in reverse. I did not know only half the pump actually works to do gyre (with the proper paddle). which kind of makes the flow unbalanced and lead to dead spots (or stuff accumulating on the weaker side).
 
Doughboy, if i understood right he has his set up that way intentionally. MY CP-40 has both paddles for forward flow. And reverse is pretty useless in my opinion on it.

To the shakes....i think it is part of the vibration dampening they have built into the mount. There are several rubber grommets separating the pump itself from the magnet. Mine run very silent!!!!
 
No it only comes with one set. I've had mine for about a month on a 50 cube with center overflow. It's too much flow on every setting except one the ramp up and down. This thing moves a ton of water I took all of my powerheads out. So far so good I'll be upgrading to a bigger tank soon which will obviously help with the power of the flow. I wouldn't recommend this on anything smaller then 50.
 
Question for everyone...I've had my cp 40 for about 2 months. This is the second motor I've used (first one was delivered to me with a broken left side shaft). But both motors make an annoying whining sound regardless of speed. Right now I have it set at 5 on wave 3 and I can hear the whine in another room.

Does anyone's cp whine like this? Is there something I'm doing wrong?
 
I have a 100g ish peninsula tank (66"Lx20"w x18h). Would you guys recommend the 130 or 150? Can the magnets handle thick glass ? (5/8"+?)

Any real difference in gyre vs Jabeo version?

And most importantly which one is the quietest? My goal is a dead Quiet tank :)

Unless you want a lower flow rate. I haven't set up the CP40 yet, but the Maxspect has worked well for me and I appreciate the reverse flow being significantly lower. That way I can move a ton of water along the surface in forward and much less water down toward the sand and corals when in reverse.

My friend's was quiet as well. But he was asking about the shake. I could only tell him my Maxspect is solid as a rock and only has a very, very faint whine. The sound of water moving in the tank is louder than the whine unless you get your ear near the glass by the pump.
 
From what I read so far, only half what maxspect gyre advertised really works. Either it is full 100% in one direction only, and nothing (they called it turbulence lol, they really have a creative marketing person) in reverse, or only one side in one direction and the other side in reverse. The way they advertised this gave me the impression it will run full flow both sides in either direction. I guess they made the best out of the physical limitation. I have a bare bottom so I really want it to run both sides fully operational in either direction, which is what they are claiming in their website, but the reality is only one side works as advertised.

since jebao is subject to the same physical limitation, and they do not supply the paddle that will work full flow in reverse, then it is essentially a one direction pump. I understand using two operating alternately will do the gyre effect but that defeats the purpose of getting a pump that runs in reverse.
 
Another benefit of reversing flow even for short times periodically is to self clean off the grills.

I've been running alternating gyres for quite awhile now and love it.

you are running AA or BB right? would you say since the flow is only on one side, that it becomes unbalanced? It has to be right?

I was initially thinking of getting the 12" model and installing it in front center glass of my 60 cube, that way it has 6 inches space on each side and actually pushes the surface water into the overflow. then run in reverse to kick up the accumulations. So my concern is, if running AA or BB, the flow will be unbalanced. I noticed the price of cp-40 is now down to $133 (was $129 yesterday from same seller) shipped (there was one seller selling used one for higher than $140 and refusing to budge saying waiting period to get one is over a month, lol). If it ever comes down to $100, I might just get one.

I'm not sure what you mean by unbalanced. I have two gyres. One on the left side and one on the right side. Right now I'm playing with the left side mounted vertical on the back left and the right side mounted horizontal on the right side 2-3" from the top. I also had it for quite some time with the right side mounted on the back right side vertical.

With the vertical placement I have AA or BB correct. At any time half of it is in forward direction and the other half in reverse direction. The reversed flow half does not interfere at all with the full force forward flow. You adjust the cages to direct the forward flow the direction you want. So you need another set of paddle wheels and cages to go with them.
 
Keep in mind I also have a 6' tank. If it was shorter like 4' or less I'd probably only need the one vertical. I also control them via my Apex and have very fine control over them and have them dynamically setup to alternate with the seasonal charts lunar cycle.
 
AA/BB running half forward half reverse is what I meant by unbalanced, instead of running both sides full flow forward and full flow reverse (which is not possible due to physical limitation of the paddle angle). So one side will get more flow forward, while the other side will get more flow on reverse.

For a long tank, yes I think it makes sense to have one on either side, running full forward alternately. This will make it balanced, no weak side or weak direction.

Are you controlling maxspect or Jabeo via apex? What size did you go with for the 6'?
 
I just got my CP-40 and put it on my 75. I removed my Koralia and MP10. So far, after fiddling with it, it's great. It's about 3 inches from the surface, with each side turned slightly up - before they were down and before I knew they were adjustable sand was everywhere. The magnet is SUPER strong - no way this is getting knocked off and I like the low profile outside the tank - sure more bulk inside, but I'll get used to it. I don't even care about the wire, I mean the MP10 has a wire too, just one is inside and one is out.

I have it on W3 wave mode right now, at the 2nd setting. I really like the movement at the surface - just a gentle rippling. I may ramp it up but everything is swaying as it should be. Freaked my poor mandarin out when I was messing with the settings and had the flow too high - poor guy. It's much slower now, so hopefully he'll calm down.
