Lanthanum chloride

I like the idea of dosing before the skimmer then having the skimmer output water filtered through the sock. I would guess between the two the suspended lanthanum and phos would be pulled out for sure.

I used the type in the filterbag link, ordered off another site, same material bag.
Hopefully someone else will chime in with what they use.

Stayed up until 3 am last night and finished this entire novel. Thanks for the vast amount of information Gary and everyone else. I am considering dosing lanthanum to bring my PO4 down with the end goal reducing hair and bubble algae. My goal is to bring Po4 to about .05 ppm and hopefully maintain the low count with gfo. Could anyone give me a dosing recommendation? I have approx 140 gallons of total water. Current PO4 is .15ppm with Hannah checker ppb. I plan on dosing lanthanum into my over flow via 1.1 ml/min brs doser. Water enters my sump from overflow into a tray that holds 3 filter socks. I have purchased 5 micron socks for this. After the socks, the water goes into my skimmer section (not all water enters skimmer). I purchased seaklear commercial (full original strength). I also plan on doing a 40g water change immediately following any lanthanum dosing to reduce free non bound lanthanum in my system. I only plan on dosing lanthanum on a as needed basis. Can anyone suggest a very safe dilution and dosage for my circumstances? I'd love to stay and watch my filter socks fill up and stop dosing just before they overflow like Gary does, but I usually don't have time for that.

Since my sump set up is the same as Dustin1300's I think I will also mount a float switch to turn off doser when the socks start to over flow. Thanks for the idea!

As far as the sock holders, I forgot to glue the float switch mount originally and am going to have to dry off a place and glue while in sump one day. Here's the sketchup.

I need to comment on this. It is close to a miracle treatment I'd have to say when done correctly. I started on the 25th with commercial seaklear. Used 5ml diluted into 1L of rodi. Used a BRS 1.1ml/min doser. Used 5 micron socks. Full 1L took nearly 14 hours to dose. After 2 1L doses my tank has gone from .15ppm P04 to .03ppm P04. Nearly all bubble algae has already disappeared. Most hair algae has turned brown and started falling off the rocks. I still scrub the water with GFO. I lost a small monti colony due to rapid p04 reduction. Very satisfied with these results. I will be using lanthanum on a as needed basis from here on out. Thanks for all this info in this thread.

perhaps someone can help Michael- I am unable

What he has available is "LANTHANUM CHLORIDE, SOLUTION, 10%" If it's safe to assume that means he can obtain a product that is 90% water and 10 Lanthanum Chloride, if we know the same info about SeaKlear, it would be easy to figure out. Unfortunately, that info is not on the bottle (original, or CR version), and I couldn't find it via google, either.

Seaclear cr is 66% diluted

Thanks . Where di you get that information ? I couldn't find it on th mds or other searches.

Seaclear cr is 66% diluted

I think you're getting that from our discussion on the difference between the original SeaKlear product and the CR version. The new version is 1/3 as effective as the original, but that doesn't mean that it's 66% water and 34% Lanthanum Chloride.

result aftter using the 10% lacl3.
dilute 4 liter RO water with 3 ml of lacl3, one drop a second for 24 hour,po4 from 0.79 to 0.53 with normal 50 micron socks.
no harm to fish or coral
