Leopards can spend a surprisingly long time in the sand bed, however, the longer they go without emerging the less the chance that they will emerge. Just very tricky fish. I bought a trio off DD (a pretty good bet, generally) and am having issues. After all three being out and eating in my fuge, one of the females stopped coming out. No idea why. Moved the male up the display and no sign of him now for three days. :(

I would assume that he was in your 36 bow front tank which is way to small IMO for such a "swimmer". that may have been part of the problem but if a single wrasse passed in any of my tanks they never caused any spikes and were quickly eaten up by my clean up crew .what sort of headache did it cause ?

+1... 1 dead small fish should not be a big problem

Some of mine were out right way while others stayed buried for some time, don't panic after only a few days ..the record holder is my Blue Star which stayed buried for almost three weeks(thought she was gone) but she finally emerged for a 1/2 an hour each day and I made sure she got food...she slowly stayed out longer and longer... now almost a year later she is out from morning till dusk....

Just thought to update leopard died in my dsb and caused all sorts of headaches

Sorry to hear that. On a more positive note, though, the Bipartitus female in my fuge who had been out and eating and then disappeared .... has now re-emerged after spending a week in the sand. She seems none the worse for wear and is back eating again. I did remove the male, as the fuge is a bit cramped for three leopards, so perhaps he was bullying the females. Otherwise, I have no good explanation for her suddenly coming back out.

That really does appear to be the key with these fish: get them acclimated and fed based on their schedule, which will gradually adapt to the tanks! My most established leopard, a meleagris female, did the same thing in terms of when she was out, and would only accept frozen brine or Mysis. Fast forward almost 6 months and she is right there in the daily feeding frenzy and will eat nori, just about any kind of frozen, and NLS pellets. About the only thing she doesn't yet eat are flakes.

I totally agree with you...many of the burrowing species of wrasses, not just Leopards, have their own schedule and they slowly acclimate to the scheduling of their tanks....and the time it takes is not only by species, but the individuals...

I was going to check in on you, but you beat me to it. Glad she's back...

I had the wrasse in the dsb in my fuge. I guess the fuge didn't have enough life in the dsb and it caused the dsb to turn into a nuke the bottom was black and nutrients from the dead wrasse I guess leaked and it caused a algae bloom that led to my display i had to wet vac the whole dsb out my whole house smelled like rotten eggs

Yeah, thanks, me too!

To have a leopard out and eating and then disappear for a full week ... well, not a good prognosis .... but she's out again today and was out all day yesterday so go figure.

Male up in the display also continues to hold his own. He is not out for the full day, generally only the morning, but his ripped fins have healed and he is quite aggressive in going after Mysis shrimp. In this first photo can see the established female meleagris is almost as big as the male bipartitus.

Bigger dusky is generally leaving the male alone, and he has pal-ed up with my potters. Cautiously optimistic!

My new 'project' is to get a small black leopard bought this past weekend from my LFS to eat.

How are your DD trio faring?
really good. they have all adjusted and are up early around 8am and bed usually an hour or two before sunset (10pm) consistently every day, all eating well a variety of food (still can't get them on blackworms though), and very active. looking to add my last few wrasses in the next couple months then move on to the rest of the stocking list.

Newest addition .....

Lousy photo, but fish is very skittish. Picking at the rocks in QT, but not taking any frozen yet. A couple of small whitish patches on his tail; doesn't appear to be ich but worth watching. Was kind of hoping this fish would eat some of the flatworms in this small tank. No such luck!

neat - m.negrosensis? will you do prazi once a bit more settled?

Negrosensis I think, yes. There is also a naoki wrasse in this tank that needs parzi and although this is a QT tank, I run it as a full reef tank so normally it sees no meds. Got a major flatworm problem in this tank though, so need to see if prazi will kill those too (and potentially poison the tank). May wait a bit to see if worms are suspected or not. If the leopard was eating I'd probably do metro as a food soak, but it is not yet.
