Hahnmeister said: "Marineland was showing off their series of tanks. They look very nice and come in some huge sizes... this one was 6 foot long and 3 foot deep... what other maker has these? They also said this tank's MSRP was only about $1000, and it has Starphire on the front 3 sides!!!"

Are you sure of this? $1000 MSRP for that exact same tank?
My husband actually told me if this is true I should get one!!!
I think he's tired of helping me restore my 280 gal used acrylic tank. Getting a new glass tank would make his life easier ; )

That doesnt include the stand or canopy, but yes, thats what they told Victor right in front of me.

We were talking at the bar  :crazy1: about 'what other city could possibly top this MACNA in Atlanta?'... with the Aquarium and all... you know?

I would say that since IMAC is no more, Chicago would be a given. Atlanta doesnt really have much to do in that area... you have to go up to the Virginia Highlands and Buckhead for the most part. The Aquarium is neato, but there are several places that I feel could give Atlanta a run for it... mostly Chicago, SanFran, somewhere in Florida (although I have seen enough ORA for a while now...lol). Or, of course, it is called the 'M.A.C. of NORTH AMERICA' so having it up in Canada might be cool... Toronto for instance would be killer, eh? I hear they get black maximas up there for cheap, eh? Thats where Giesemann and lots of other 'North American' distributors are, eh?

But Cali... I bet one reason it isnt so common is because there are several events there already (like Chitown with IMAC, which now is gone... so Chicago?!?!). Reef-a-palooza and others in that area. And another reason is because major vendors/sponsors/supporters like ORA and F&S wouldnt hold a candle to all the wholesellers, importers, and stores over there that can carry corals that are 2x as cool for 1/2 the price (all the cool corals get cherry picked there unless you are direct shipping elsewhere, but still, that costs more $$$). So for MACNA to retain their major supporters, they wouldnt want to drag their sponsors into a market that they have no interest in. Cali (and close by) has enough reefers to pretty much have their own MACNA every year.

I'm going to call some retailers tomorrow ; ) Thanks for the info.

I third Orlando!!! I am only 4 hours from Atlanta but missed out due to health issues. Orlando is about a 5 hour drive. Tampa would be cool for me. I used to live there and could stay with friends. Lots of reefers there too.

I've got a bunch of pics too.. none too good as my camera's battery died... but i'll get them up tomorrow.

The location of the event has nothing to do with retailers, Vendors, shipping, etc.
It is all about the hosting club and if they can pay for it. Many clubs do not have the ability to handle what it takes to run the show. There are several requirements MASNA has that many Clubs just can not handle. Here is the place to start http://www.masna.org/macna_bid.php just forget the dates and other outdated info, the forms and such should still be good.

Think of MACNA and MASNA much like the Olympics and the IOC. Different cities/clubs bid on hosting MACNA each year. The one with the best bid gets to host the event. No California club has bid on hosting MACNA in recent years.

I called a well respected retailer and was told the 72" tank was $1999 : ( Maybe the Marineland guy confused it with one of the smaller sizes. I guess I'll get back to buffing the 280.

Great pics all! I have to say, I am glad those people running security at the Georgia Aquarium were not protecting our borders. How they found Heathers lighter is beyond me. :D

This was my first MACNA and I had a great time. Meeting and hanging out with Erin, Heather, hahnmeister, Victor, Jon Warner, Proline guys, Chris, Paul and the other Tampa Bay reefers made me wish I hadn't waited so long to attend my first MACNA. I didn't see a single speaker this year but I did enjoy just talking with other attendees. I can't wait to see you all again next year. Or sooner for some of you…….

Chihuahua6, thats odd... maybe you should talk with Victor, because I know his ears perked up and he was interested in the tank more than I was.

Even after seeing the 'brick' and all the other nice tanks, Im still going to go with AGE myself.

hahn 2 of our locals have the new marineland deep tanks, one of them is 5'x3' and i believe he paid $1500 for it,the other was 6'x3' and he paid about $1800.i saw the brick tank and to me it looked like a glorified glass cages tank,so i wouldnt even consider it.the AGE's are really nice, one of our guys just got a 4'x4'x2'(240g rimless)it was such a beast and heavy as hell, the quality is first rate on the AGE.

That is ~ the MSRP on the 36x36 version. I just bought the 48x36 version and the MSRP on it is about $1300. I know this for fact as my LFS owner showed me his catalog.

Because pics of the trade show has been covered pretty thoroughly, I thought I'd start with about a dozen of my favorite Georgia Aquarium shots.

This was the entrance to the Aquarium exhibit area. Probably the most difficult shot as getting detail in the ceiling while maintaining proper exposure for the fishtanks and people required several attempts.

Large Reeftank 1. Notice the school of healthy Moorish Idols.

GA-2-Reeftank-1.jpg

Actually, this probably wasn't the healthiest reeftank I'd ever seen, but shots like this remind me what's REALLY important about what we do.

Manta Ray swimming past skylight.

MACNA members snorkeling the big tank, again from below.

Visitors getting a visit from a Whale Shark.

GA-7-Vertical-Window.jpg

This is probably as close as I'll ever come to having one of these things swim directly toward me.

GA-8-Whale-Shark-1.jpg

The 'window' of the 9.3 million gallon main tank shot with a 14mm lens!

GA-9-Big-Window.jpg

Guess who's coming to dinner?

GA-10-Diners-and-Shark.jpg

And finally, another Manta Ray shot. Is it just me or is there something 'Star Trek'-ian about this picture?

GA-11-Manta-Ray-II.jpg

Hey, I said ABOUT a dozen!!! I'll look over the rest tomorrow and if I find some good ones that haven't been posted yet, I'll do another round.
