LTA vs. Koralia

My LTA has been in the smae spot for around a year and a half, even through countless re-aquascaping episodes. Yeasterday I moved small rocks to make room for some corals, and today I moved a large finger leather, because the LTA had grown enough to start touching it. The LTA never once retracted as if it were stressed, but I go to the garage for an hour and when I come back in the LTA had somehow gotten sucked onto a Koralia, and attached to the glass right next to the powerhead.

I don't see any visible damage, and it isn't completely retracted, but what should I be looking out for to know whether or not its going to make it? When I first got into the hobby I had a condy die, and didn't know any better and it wiped out the whole tank, definately dont want a 14" LTA going bad in the tank whatsoever.
 
I had that happen a year ago -- but with a SIEO.

Mine looked really bad, but made a full recovery. As long as the foot is not damaged, I say the odds are pretty good. Just make sure to keep your water in check.

Thanks for the reply, Toddrtrex. Mine is nowhere close to that bad, so that gives me a lot of hope. How did yours get caught up? I think mine just decided to expand a little farther than normal and got sucked in.
 
I wish I knew why my released from the sandbed. It had been in the same spot for 6+ months, and nothing changed with the tank. Came home from work one day and it was stuck in the powerhead.

And that is good that yours doesn't look as bad as mine did. But how close to the sand bed is the powerhead if the LTA was still attached to the sandbed?
 
The powerhead is at the top of the tank, but my LTA likes to expand its whole diameter which is about 14 inches, plus it really stretches its foot sometimes. Before this incident it had never gotten closer than 6 inches to the powerhead. I am not positive it was attached to the sandbed when it happpened or not, because when it was stuck to the powerhead it had its foot attached to the glass up near the top of the tank, but about 4 inches to the side of the powerhead. So, it could have just suddenly released like yours too.
 
It is actually still attached to the glass. It kinda sucks, because its on the side of the tank at the top now, plus i had to move the powerhead to the back glass now to get it far enough away, so my flow is completely different now. Do you happen to know how to get a LTA to stay where you want it. When i got this one it was one of the first things invert-wise in the tank, so I let it find its spot then built around it.
 
Has anything changed recently with the tank? And what lights are you running.

I have noticed that they prefer lower flow, and and not very direct. Also, how deep is your sand bed?
 
Only minor changes to the tank. Moved 2 rocks by just an inch or so and relocated a large spaghetti leather that the LTA was touching. Got about 3-4 inches of sand and running a coralife 216 watt pc fixture. Been running the same setup since I set the tank up. The LTA had stayed put for over a year and a half. It's funny you metion yours likes low flow, becuase mine always seemed to stretch to get into direct flow, thats why I think it might of just got a little too close to the powerhead.
 
And this is in your 75 correct? I think part of the issue is the lights, really on the low end for an LTA in that tank. I have a strong feeling that that is why it didn't settle into the sand bed -- which is where LTAs prefer to be. And that would explain the stretching that it has been doing.
 
I know it is probably a little on the low end fpr light, never seemed to bother it until the last 3 months or so though, it nver stretched before then, and there was no changes made before the strectching either. I am saving up for better light, but its a slow process with other, more important (household) things for the money to go toward.
 
And let me guess, the PC bulbs are about 9-12 months old? That would make sense why it started reaching about 3 months ago. Start saving up for a new fixture, and in the mean time get some new bulbs. What bulbs are you using? meaning, daylights, actinics, and/or 50/50's.
 
for the long tips to be happy you need more then 3 inches of sand--they need to be able to completely submerge that foot
 
Toddrtrex is dialed in exactly on this.
My LTA stretched out and high up as well when I had PC's.
W/ stronger light it went straight down to sand.
I've noticed my LTA prefers to be in a cave area so it can draw in/out as it wants for light/flow, and prefers med light/flow compared to my sebae, which loves very bright light and stronger flow.
My LTA seems much more sensitive than my sebae, and does love deep sand, sometimes completely burying itself.
 
I am running 2 10000k bulbs and 2 dual actinics, the bulbs are only about 4 months old. It has grown quite a bit since i got it, so maybe it has a higher light demand now.
When I came home from work today it was still attached to the glass near the top, but it is open, just not all the way. It looks like it lost a few tentacles to the powerhead, but no damage was done to the foot or the disk. Looks like it is going to make it out ok.
 
My clowns finally found it too. They were a little lost last night, just floating around where it used to be. Poor guys thought they were homeless.

My problem is all the LTA's are taking things over and killing. I have tried getting them to move by blasting them with flow. Then I took out the rock that they are all attached to and hung it upside down with just the tentacles touching the water thinking they might drop. After 30 min out of the water I chickened out and put the rock back in my tank. Any other suggestions for getting them to move. I could take the rock out but it's my fav and completely covers my overflow.

I am betting you have Bubble tips and not Lta's. Lta's do not split but bta's sure do. Sell the extra ones that you have. I used to just gently use my nail to lift there foot of the rock.slow process but never damaged a foot doing so.
 
Definitely not bubble tips. My LTA's split once every three months or so. I am away from home but will post some picks when I get back next week. So you wedge your fingernail at the edge of the foot and they eventually release. How long does that take??? I will give it a try. Should be fun because I have a tomato clown that loves the taste of blood and is good a wetting his appetite.
