I like the fish side view - looked different building from my perspective. Looking forward to seeing this one get wet! Thanks for the opportunity to work on this build with you!

The sump is delayed for another week. Bah.. Can't do any plumbing. Taking the time to add more electrical outlets around the room. Drilled some holes for RODI line and bought a Spectrapure Maxcap. also wired a Cat6 cable to the tank for APEX.

some more goodies arrived..

plumbing parts.. wanted white and red tank for years but somehow ended up with all black. Black wall, black tank, black sump, red pipes

so the Gyre 280 standalone unit is still out.. this got me thinking about switching to Vortech MP60s. The only pump that won't have any wires inside the tank, which I really dislike.

What do you guys think? 2 Gyre 280s or 5 MP60s.
(I know about gyre quality)

I also have 4 seaswirls for returns.

2 MP60 on each side and 3 on back wall? over kill?

Are you using all four sea swirls as returns from your sump pump? Why not use two of them in a closed loop with a second variable speed pump?

On internal flow... Why don't you just start with one MP60 or Gyre on each end? And then later add more.

IMO Ecotech Marine propeller pumps and Gyre can't compare to each other, they have a completely different flow patters. Better make sure to look at the flow that you are trying to archive and choose on a product accordingly.

I haven't designed any closed loop system. Didn't really want to go that direction. If I did, I think I'd go with an Ocean Motion. All 4 SeaSwirls are attached to sump return.

I figured the SS will provide decent water movement at the surface. The MP60s I can place low enough to give movement at the lower portion.

in the long run, with SPS in this system, I will eventually need to replace the Gyre with MP60 or WAV. But that won't be for awhile

yours may be getting wet earlier than mine! :o this sump is taking FOREVER...

just bought a Spectrapure Maxcap.. no more high TDS

I used to like Vortech products, then I fell out of love in a hurry when they needed constant maintenance and replacement parts (those magnets were the worst, since that's not something you can get 3rd party), their PSUs turned to crap (which luckily was something 3rd party you could get as they charged way more than they should have).

That said, the newer QD models seemed to have fixed all the issues I had with the wetsides over the years I've had them. I may end up replacing all the wetsides with the QD wet sides and ... but I dunno. I like the idea of the Gyre pumps a lot, especially with large open expanses... but I personally have no experience with them.

I like the Vortech QDs. more than Gyre and I've been using Gyre since day 1. However I don't like the idea of 5-6 MP60s with 5-6 controllers and plugs. I'll need a bunch of APEX links too..

I just bought the Panta Rhei Hydro Wizard ECM63. Will post some reviews once my tank gets wet. This beast alone is suppose to be strong enough for my tank.

good news is sump is finished. bad news delivery guy got "stuck". so I'll see if I can get it this weekend..

in the mean while. some pictures of new equipment

Panta Rhei ECM 63 pump. This and 4 SS should handle all the flow needs for now

very expensive snail guard... and no instruction on how to install it..
