Minimalist Aquascaping

I have a little less than 100 lbs. of rock for my soon to be finished 360g. It strikes me that it will qualify as minimal. :D Will bookmark this thread and post when it's aquascaped.

I want to elaborate a bit about my previous post. I can't wait to see what you come up with, especially with the LED lighting you have planned. (Yes, I've been following your build thread:lol2:) That design along with all the open sand bed you have will truly be minimalist.

My 125

My 125

Here's my version:

front/back

The tank is a 6ft long 125g and is one month old. It will look better once the corals fill in.

WOW, you have a frag bed in there! Rockwork reminds me if a dinosaur bones in a museum :) That is quite impressive.

I like the rockwork, but holy hell - that's a lot of frags! Are those all going to stay in there?

Yeah, there are around two hundred 1.5" aragonite tiles suspended 1" from the bare bottom. I had read a post where someone was trying to cover the entire bottom of their tank with zoa gardens, and I always thought it sounded like a good idea. This way I can frag, treat, photo, or move around my high end zoa mini colonies without harming them.

Thanks. The layout allows me to keep plenty of sps with a small footprint of rock.

akwarius, that is a very unique rock structure, I dig it. Ive never really seen anything like that.

ill be adding pictures here in a month or so, nothing as epic as some of these, my new tank which is in the works is only 19x19x19. 30g, but its a neat little tank, kind of unique.
ive started hand picking some rock ive found, hopefully it comes together as nicely as some of the tank ive seen in this thread. what a great thread.

Thanks. Can't wait to see your cube. I've always struggled to make the rock work look great at first, just to have it fill in with corals and eventually look too crowded. Don't think I'll have that same problem with this one.

As a side note, I used to keep Amano-style planted tanks, and was inspired in part by his breathtaking minimal freshwater displays. I have always thought there was a tremendous potential for captive reefs to have more artistic color and composition. If you haven't seen any of his aqua-designs, they are a good source for scaping ideas.

Are you using large pieces to create your shelf and islands? They look very dense almost mountain like.

Actually the island to the right is almost one big pieces, I have some backing it up so it seem a little taller. I try to have a slope on both of the "mountain" =)

The left one is actually not dense, the rock itself is very light. And inside the structure there's just passage for my fish to hide / sleep and for flow.

That reminds me a lot of a display tank at a LFS. They have a 6'x6' tank that was all zoas. It looked quite stunning, a lot like rolling hills. I'll try to dig up a picture.

Can't wait to see pictures when this grows out. I intended to go minimalist when I did my most recent build but it just didn't work out that way. Not a rock wall, but my build certainly isn't minimalist.

Holy mother of pearl!! :eek1:Thats amazing! Are they all different frags? Is the whole bottom zoas?! :inlove:
