Minimalist Aquascaping

Question for those of you with true minimalist aquascapes - do you supplement your biological filtration in some way? So do you add live rock or some other material to your sump?

Thanks!

Mine is pretty light on rock... I think I may have posted it before in this thread... but it's changed some

Looking good. D you have any additional filtration?

How long was it running?
I've used Thorite and Qwik Crete hydraulic cement on PVC before and liked the look, but it always sloughed off the PVC after a year or two. Thorite lasted longer, but it even sloughed off.

I even roughed up the PVC surface with sandpaper and used superglue and sand to try and give the cement something to grip onto.

Just looking for another option.

Thanks.

Here's my 40 Gallon Breeder tank. I use about 40 lbs. of my 50 lbs. of rock and put it together like a puzzle. I used fiberglass rods and DryLok Fast plug to "glue" them together.

There are four separate standalone sections. Each have the bottoms cut flat and rest right on the glass. None of them can tip over and the two back large pieces only touch each other where they meet though they look like one solid structure. There is a lot of space all around them and in between with lots of shelves. It is pretty minimalistic IMO.

Will be putting the sand in today while I wait for my RODI unit to make some pure water.

Here are some other angles...

What a difference in appearance it makes having the sand in! Looks so much like a landscape now.

After looking it over for a day, I shifted the rock around a little bit to make the pattern flow better. Subtle, but better to me...

This looks great! What rock is this?

Thanks. It is the reef safe rock like from BRS, only from my LFS. I bought about 50 lbs. and then sawed and chiseled it all apart and put it back together using fiberglass rods and DryLok Fast Plug cement (which as far as I can tell is the equivalent of Marco cement).

I wanted sort of a spiral staircase effect of ledges for corals, with overhangs and tunnels for other creatures and fish to hide under, yet still be visible to me. It also keeps the whole structure open for good water flow all around.

Do you have a build thread or more pics of this process?
