Mountains of sawdust (360g plywood, LED, Arduino build)

Tank is looking great, Nate!

Of course it doesn't. Pure coincidence :D

I wish I could figure out what the heck I did with the picture of my friend's 300 gallon plywood tank that I took when I went to Australia to visit him and his wife. This tank was outstanding and full of native animals that he was able to (legally) obtain from local collectors that he often went on collection trips with. I'm not sure that's even legal anymore. His ritteri anemones were the centerpieces of his tank and they were outstanding.

There is a sticky'd thread in the anemone and clownfish forum called "How rare is this?"... long story short, it is still perfectly legal to collect there for personal use and you can park by the sides of roads and stroll right into tidal pools at low tide and collect almost anything imaginable.

It is a fascinating thread that will make you hate your life. :) There's a similar one in the SPS forum called "Marshall Island Wild SPS" or something like that. That one is even worse.

I used to agree with you until my clowns started doing this (which subsequently killed my gigas clam)

I just laughed so f****** hard!

Great, now I want a gigas, too.

I went to the LFS to check out the ritteri and they were doing a water change on the tank it was in, so it was all deflated and unhappy. They have it on hold for me though, will go back in a few days to check it out. It was mostly the typical tan coloration but it showed signs of yellow/green tips that looked promising.

kcress - ritteris are only the most magnificent anemones in the world!

(insert "punny" laughter)

The 'nem is being held for me at the LFS, pending signs that it's healthy I'll bring it home. I'm as happy as a leeeetul girl!

As far as coloration and size, the anemone looks identical to the one elegancecoral struggles with in this thread:

It's been at the LFS for a week and other than being deflated the one time I visited (thanks to the in-progress water change) It has seemed totally healthy, so fingers crossed...

Well I brought it home last night. I wanted to bring it home on a Thursday since I work from home on Fridays and hence can monitor things.

What a night last night.

I put the anemone on the isolated rock pile towards the front right of the tank, where the purple gorg and pink birdsnest used to be (relocated them of course). I even built a little eggcrate cage around the top of the rock to keep it isolated from fish while it acclimates, and ideally to keep it from blowing around the tank.

Well, it partially worked. Fish aren't bothering it, but it's not exactly grabbing on to the rock with a solid grasp. I went to bed around 10 last night and it was partially attached to the top of the rock pile. I went down around 1 to check on it, and it had somehow managed to squirm through a TINY hole (compared to the anemone's size) in the rock, into the main cave in the middle of that bit of rockwork. It's foot was barely attached. Not wanting to disturb it I left it and tried to get back to sleep, but instead laid in bed until about 4:30 worrying about it.

All this time my spidey senses were tingling like there was something wrong, so I went back to check on the tank and noticed the overflow level was way off, as if the return pump's flow had been cut way down. I shut the pump off, and in the backwash as the plumbing drained down, my emerald crab washed back out of the pump. :( Poor guy probably died from dizziness. He was intact save for the end of one leg but definitely deceased. Not totally sure how he got into the pump in the first place, as he would have had to get past eggcrate on the drain, then eggcrate in the sump separating the return chamber.

Anyways, around breakfast time this morning, the anemone had let go of the rock and plopped down to the sand. So I scooped him back up and put him back in his eggcrate cage on top of the pile, after blocking off his last escape route with a bit of rock rubble.

He's not looking terrible - mouth is tight, most tentacles are inflated. But he's definitely still not happy. Much smaller than he had been in the store and generally looking ****ed off. I can't tell if he's grabbed on to the rock or not. Time will tell. Fingers are crossed...

interesting about the mouths.

Have you turned your flow way down? Maybe shutoff the main flow and just let a small powerhead circulate the water for a few hours while it is able to settle onto its rock.

How did they get it out of the tank at the store? Was it on rock that needed to be pried off or glass?

Is there a big difference in the lighting from the store to you?

Flow is turned way down. Closed loop is running at ~20% maximum (typical range is roughly 40% - 60% maximum) and return is valved back. Lighting is down about 25% lower than normal, as my lights are definitely more intense than what it was under at the LFS (four T5s).

The anemone was partially attached to a small piece of rock at the store. I watched the employee pull it off - he was plenty careful. I checked the foot thoroughly and saw no evidence of damage.

I have a few on my phone but the color rendition is horrendous.

It's stayed put since the last post, I'll take that as a good sign. In a few hours I might try to gently peek under it to see if it's attaching (vs just sitting there on the rock). If it's attached I'll turn the flow up a few percent - I'm willing to bet that the sad shape it's in right now is at least partially due to poor flow.

Sounds like it's going to split as a stress reaction to being placed in your tank. Might also explain why it hasnt reinflated yet.

 I would just leave it be for now because if it does split, it will be even more delicate than it is now until it recovers.

Good news: it is sorta attached.

Bad news:it it is TOTALLY deflated. Like, down to about 4" across from a max size of maybe 12".

Hoping this is just a part of adjustment, not a prelude to death. Looks like another sleepless night for me.

Pssst! Hey DWIZM...don't look now but your OCD is showing.. You're the only person I know who would lose two night's sleep over an anemone

I'm sure it's just adjusting or getting ready to split or both. If it's attached, it's a good sign but I wouldn't blast it with water just yet. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Wanna hear about my ocd? I took some photos of it but decided not to post them because the eggcrate playpen is all crooked. :D

I checked on it a few times in the night and he was looking better. Trnd continues today. Inflated to maybe 6-8" and tentaccles a little more lively. Definitely not out of the woods but way way better than last night. I noticed he had dumped some zooxanthellae late yesterday afternoon so I am wondering if my lights are too much still, so I turned them down another 20%. Ahh, the beauty of dimmable LEDs.
