Mutt's Build - IM's New Fusion 40

muttley101

Never go full retard!
Hey All!

Getting back into the hobby and was going to go nano; However, I knew I was going to need a little more room. Unfortunately, the size is slightly over the limits for a Nano. So I went with IM's new Fusion 40 they just released.

I do want to say thanks to everyone over in the nano forum. They have been a tremendous help over the past month.

I plan to go SPS dominant Bare Bottom... maybe Zeovit if the frags grow well...

Now for the good Stuff..

Tank: IM Nuvo Fusion 40 • DIMS (24” x 20” x 19”) Low Iron Glass... Starfire like.. 8mm thick.. Didn't like the curved glass on their other tanks that were having issues with.

Lighting: Ecotech Radion Gen3 (Non-Pro) LEDs

Flow: Jaebo wp-25, saving for corals (maybe Ecotechs later after some fragging and tagging)

Skimmer: TBD.. Researching Cadlights, Aquamaxx HOB, or maybe a Algae Scrubber

Aquascaping: Thinking about going EcoFriendly low-impact this time around with some Dry rock and some Real Reef to seed.

H20: Again staying EcoMinded with a Kold Ster-il (no waste water) with a DI on the tail end. Our lake in Folsom CA is hit pretty hard..

Controller: Apex lite

ATO: Still pondering a few out there... Tunze nano (old-school), Hydor (temp based), or Hydrofill (current based)

Still designing my stand...

Here are a few pictures of the tank... Marine Depot did an excellent job shipping the unit. The box it was shipped in was packed better than the factory. However, the factory did a pretty good job. The tank itself looks well built. Seams are clean, and there is even a leveling mat attached to the bottom of the tank. (more to come)

Glad you're tackling the documentation of this build! I'm highly considering this tank for my first salt tank. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

Looking great,
Did you get a reactor? And may I ask why you didn't go for the IM skimmer?

Thanks all... I did not mention the IM skimmer because I was told that they were going to make one specific to the fusion series... I'm not holding my breath for one coming out anytime soon so I decided to research what's available. However, it would be nice to take a look at the specs of the new fusion skimmer if it existed.

This is from facebook:

Innovative Marine: Yes, there will be specific Custom Caddy's and Protein Skimmers for the Fusion tanks.

I would recommend the CAD Lights Skimmer. I had the IM skimmer on my Nuvo 30 for over a year and it did a decent job but it doesn't compare to the CAD.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards the CAD skimmer.. only heard good things... and the price is nice too! More money for livestock!

I'm really loving the look of these Fusions! Can't wait to see this build up and running. Following along!

If your going dry rock I suggest going BRS Pukani, it's great stuff however it's not Eco friendly as you wanted. Pukani is harvested from the ocean, dried, and then shipped. It's very porous compared to the reef saver that is heavy and difficult to cut.

Finally have a weekend to whip up a stand... more to come.. Thanks all!

@bif I will take a look at the BRS pukani.. Thanks for the heads up!

Yea, man I have both the reef saver and Pukani. I wish I had all Pukani. When you have them both side by side you know it's worth the extra money. It's very light and can be cut with a hack saw or use a chisel to break it up or shape it. For the size I got about 50-75% more size to weight for the Pukani because it is so porous. When I put it into RO water for the first time there where a lot of tiny bubble coming from the rock like an air stone, it's that porous. There is some organic material on the rock and it may leach phosphates but I didn't have any problem curing the rock in my display in less than a month it was fish ready. Now at 4 weeks I'm down to 0.00 phosphate (Hanna checker) running a cup of GFO. So phosphate not a big problem. Did I say it is really really porous? This is the live rock you want lol. Wish I bought all Pukani.

Here is a few more updated shots... The tanks finish is really nice. The black silicon is flawless and the low iron glass is a welcome change.

I added the Radion, Jebao's, Apex lite, Avast ATO, and Ebo Jager Heaters. The Avast has a direct link to the Apex which makes it nice to setup. Bent some conduit to hang the Radion. GFCI installed and all drip loops behind mounting board.

Live rock with some Real Reef to get it started. The Kold Ster-il made it easy and fast to get the tank filled.
