My 112G Cube Build Thread. I'm baaaaaaack!!

Another update.

Finally got the sump tray from Advanced Acrylics on Sunday. Everything measured out as expected. Although it took longer than I wanted, its finally here and i was able to continue with my build. Here are some pics of my progress this weekend.

Also finished the face framing on Sunday.

This coming weekend i'm hoping to finish building the doors. Then the following weekend will be sanding/staining. During the week i'm going to see if i can finish up the plumbing as well so i can do a leak test while i'm still in the garage. The rocks from Aqua-tecture should be in tomorrow. Will post pics of those when i get the chance.

Wow! you work fast!! I didn't make it down to Home depot for the wood on Sunday. Ran around town for fish and frags instead.

How do you plan to finish the pine? I stayed away from pine on my tanks because they don't finish well and expends more than other wood species when they get wet. 3/4" gap on the bottom is all you going with? I thought you wanted to be able to clean the bottom?

Ok, read that thread but i'm still not fully convinced. I need actual solid testimony from someone on here that has tried this combination. There is a thread that i posted to a few days ago with a member that has this combination but he doesn't seem to be responding. bummer. Even emails to him have turned up with nothing. I'm close to pulling the trigger on it but just need more info!

Lol. Yeah, i had all the wood dimensioned already so all i had to do was cut and put together. Its not a work of art like your stand but it should do. I've been debating putting a shelf around the top perimeter of the stand using either crown moulding or a slab of granite similar to yours. You cut that granite yourself? Or did you have a shop do it for you?

Also, i went with HD's select pine because i plan to paint it black. The other furniture pieces in the room have a black finish so i'm thinking of matching it rather than staining. I plan to seal it with Kilz too so hopefully water doesn't get to penetrate it, plus i have the sump tray which should contain any spills. That wood plank underneath is just a temporary shim. I haven't fastened it to the stand yet. I just stuck it there to see how it would look. I still plan to have it about 1.5" above the floor for access under the stand.

Thanks again for showing me around your awesome system. Pretty impressive setup you have and it gave me some ideas. Thanks also for the DJ strip.
Are you going to run 4" socks?
Yes, that's the plan. Why?

Forgot to mention....the rocks from Aqua-Tecture came in today but (damnit!!) one of them broke during shipping. I was actually surprised it broke since they pack everything out with that high-density spray foam surrounding the rocks. Anyways, i'm pretty bummed about it. I've sent Merrit from Aqua-tecture an email so hopefully we can resolve the matter quickly and painlessly. Not sure if anyone else had a similar experience with broken rocks from them so i'd be interested to know how it turned out.

Here are the pictures.

I had a granite and stone place on PCH (few blocks before Narbonne) cut and finished the bullnose for me, all I brought to them was a plywood template. it was pieces from their off cut pile and cost $150 for everything. I had to be super careful taking the 36x36x36 U shaped piece home, made it all the way on the stand with the help of my wife. I decided to move the piece slightly to center the 1/16" gap and ended up cracking one leg of the U, all by my self :(

NP on the DJ strip, let me know if you need a hand with anything.

Even with it broken, it still looks pretty good.

About the 4" socks. IME, they seem to clog like in 3 days as opposed to a week with a 7" sock.

Aqua-tecture responded back and suggested that i attempt to fix the break with gorilla glue. If i am satisfied with the repair, they will issue a partial refund.

Merritt is awesome.
Try the water weld type epoxy to match the color of the rock better.

Also I got my 45 lbs detox blox today
they pack it extremely well out but the delivery guys throw them away like crazy.
It took me 30 minutes to unpack my blox

I would use two part epoxy, gorilla glue can be a bit messy and not as strong if the two mating surfaces are not flat.

Ramon I think I have the red one
Its dries up super strong. If you going to Sfvr frag swap I can bring some to you.

I had a piece break as well during shipping, the company replaced it no problem.
Only bummer was that the broken piece I liked the shape a little better.

Keep up the great work on the tank. Whats the substrate thoughts...

Yeah, same here. I like the broken piece alot so hopefully it turns out ok. For substrate i plan to run a very shallow sandbed using medium crushed coral.

Thanks Lawrence. I actually found a bottle of Gorilla glue in the garage this afternoon and thought i would give it a try with that stuff first. The key to making it all hold together with Gorilla glue is to wet the 2 halves and don't over apply the stuff as it will squeeze out and expand. It actually came out pretty good.

Been sketching out the stand and creating the cut list. It really helps alot when you plan things out in advance. I find myself second-guessing my cuts way less. Anyways, here is a sketch of the stand i drew out so far.

The stand will be black, but i left it white as it was easier to read the dimensions.
